“I don’t suppose you had any brilliant dreams while you slept about how to purge the Shadow from here?”
I shook my head in frustration.
“No.”
“Well, this might help. Sauryavia
came to our cell to tell us that we’ve been found guilty of trespassing and we
are going to be today’s entertainment as punishment.”
My brows dropped. “Entertainment?”
“Arena tournament. If we beat our
assigned opponent, we walk out of here. If we don’t, that means our opponent
killed us.”
“A death sentence? For trespassing?”
I asked, appalled.
“Yeah, tell me about it. But here’s
the good news, everyone in the land is ordered to attend.”
My eyes brightened, “Really?”
He smiled. “I thought you’d like
that.”
“Indeed.”
I looked away in thought. I wondered
if I’d be able to look into the eyes of every attendee. Then I’d be able to
know who I needed to spare and who needed to be purged. I wasn’t sure I could,
but I needed to try.
I looked away in thought, assessing
my condition. I didn’t feel quite as strong today. The White Warrior seemed far
off—not by much, but not as close to me as she had been since I’d had that
vision of Yarin’s torture.
I turned inward in frustration.
Really? I said to her. You’re going to withdraw now? Why can we just coexist
like we have for the past three days? That felt right!
I heard a soft echo from somewhere
deep inside of me. I’m just weak. I exerted too much power—power beyond what I
have. Especially after that last attack on Glugnus. That took strength beyond
what I am capable of without my crown. I’m not really sure where it came from.
I sighed. Can you get strong again?
Quickly? Can you use my strength or something?
Her voice came softer. You are just
a mortal. This is taking too much strength.
And poof! She was silent.
