Camilla

Camilla Waters has fought knights, tricked trolls, and saved dragons, well in her head at least, but she never once thought she would be doing it in reality. All Camilla knows is a dull suburban life with her parents she barely sees and her neighbor, ok, somewhat best friend Josh. Cam is just your run-of-the-mill 10-year-old with an unhealthy thirst for adventure.

But all that changes when the crack in her living room wall starts to expand and out pops a strange old elf with a habit of cursing after every word she says. Without much regard for her safety, Cam jumps into a magical world she hoped to see in her dreams. There she must face not only her fears, but also her past as a great destiny unfolds before her…of course, that is if she can survive the Darkness that is brewing underneath.

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

Well, I am a college student with no idea of where I'm going in life. I suppose that's normal, but it is quite aggravating. I do know however that I enjoy writing, painting, traveling, and dreaming.

2.What types of books do you write?

I don’t think I have one particular type. I enjoy writing all genres – besides maybe romance. As of now, I’ve been going by the statement “write what you know”, which in my case is Fantasy. I love daydreaming, and with fantasy, I can just recreate my dreams for others to witness as well.

3. How many books have you written?

I have not finished a single one – yet. I’ve been an amateur writer for 10+ years, and I have countless stories under my fingertips. I even got to 80 pages of a novel before scraping it. But my current work “Camilla” is hands down my favorite so far, and I promise I am going to finish it. In fact, I have one more chapter to write of my first draft before I begin my tedious, yet needed revisions.

4.     What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Definitely the next installment of “The Hobbit”; I am completely in love with the book, and I enjoyed the first movie despite its addition of subplots.

5.     What type of books do you enjoy reading?

When I was younger, I loved fantasy and adventure tales that took me to far off lands, but now I’m a satire fan. Of course, when it’s satire mixed with a bit of fantasy or science fiction, that’s the best.

6.     If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

 1. A functioning toilet
 2. A sketchbook
 3. Somebody who can actually survive in the wild because I wouldn’t last a week – not even ashamed of it, it's just the truth.

7.     Are you considering a sequel?

Let’s just say, “Camilla” is the first in a series of six. Yes, that’s right, six! I’m crazy enough to plan that far ahead. And more importantly, I’m excited to write each and every one of them.

8.     What inspired you to become a writer?

When I was very little, I lived in my head. I would make up all these intricate stories and act them out. I have been to far off planets and back in time and on the wildest of adventures, and I loved it all. It was almost a natural transition to writing. I wanted to share my stories, my adventures with others so that I could relive my dreams and hopefully bring them to life.

Excerpt

“Can I help you find anything,” said a croaky voice from above. A man on a ladder was arranging books. His liver spotted fingers slid down the spines as he whispered the titles to himself. “Ah yes, Exceptional Herbs and their Deceptional Cousins,” he whispered as he drew the book out. His straggly gray hair lay matted on the hood of his long red robes; the elf swore he would trip on them in a matter of seconds.

The old man stepped down the ladder and placed one of the books from the teetering stack in his arms on the front desk. He then peered down at the child over his round glasses and smiled broadly exposing his yellowing, slightly crooked teeth.

“No,” the child said almost too quickly. It looked anxiously to the window. “Unless you have something that can make us invisible,” the child muttered under its breath. The old man smiled again and then turned his head in the direction of the elf.

“You!” He whispered, and the remaining books in his hands dropped to the floor. His smile had vanished.

“Me?” The elf said pointing at himself.

“I thought-“ the man began, “what are you doing here?” he asked.

“I’m sorry, I think you have me confused with someone else,” the elf said. He had no idea who this man was, let alone how he knew him.

The old man turned his head back and forth between the elf and the child. He raised his furry eyebrows so high that the elf thought they might merge into his hairline. The commotion outside was growing louder, but the elf could still hear Raas’ deep roar over the crowd.

“Do you have a back way out of here?” The child asked, peering through the large shelves that made up most of the back of the store.

The old man nodded as he looked through the curtain out the window. “We haven’t much time,” he said closing the curtain back. The old man turned to the child this time. He bent over so that his face was in line with Cam’s, “did you or did you not come here through a crack?” he asked. His clouded brown eyes looked the child up and down from over his glasses.

Cam stood silent for a moment. She looked to the old elf, but he had no clue what to say or do, he just writhed his hands. “Yes,” she finally whispered with her eyes still on the elf.

“Thought as much,” the old man said getting up. He looked between the child and the elf once more, “next time someone asks you that, you better say ‘no’, understand?” He looked very seriously down at Cam, the little girl nodded her head.

“Good,” the old man said retrieving his books and placing them on the closest table. “There is a back way, left at the tall stack of books, behind the old rune rug, see that it is unlocked,” he said to Cam. The child nodded and zoomed from where she stood through the shelves and was soon gone.

The old man sighed and rubbed his glasses with the sleeve of his long robe. “I hoped to never see you again Firi,” the old man said, walking towards the elf once more. “But it seems fate has brought us together once more,” he paused, “and who am I to question such a witty power?”

Author Spotlight - YammitTheSequel

Lionheart

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

The pen name I usually use is S.R. Miller, but you can find me throughout the internet as Werewulf14, Wherewulf14, and YammitTheWherewulf.

The username I have here is actually based on a joke my friend made when she saw my account name, which because I signed in with Facebook, arbitrarily chose to use my name but with a 2 at the end. My friend responded to this with "There was a Sequel?" And so that's what I called my account. YammitTheSequel.

2. What types of books do you write?

I started out just writing fantasy adventure stories, but I've started writing scifi too. I love both of those genres because you are not limited by reality; I love thinking that anything can happen. With those two genres I can build the world as I see fit. Reality bores me.

3. How many books have you written?

Well, if you mean finished, the answer is 1. I have a really rough manuscript from last year's Nanowrimo that needs some serious editing called Cain's Clan. The second closest is
a novel I started 5 years ago that was my first honest attempt at novel writing, called Reality with Black Cat. I currently have several ideas I'm currently working on, and several more ideas that need to get translated into manuscripts. I have a story on Figment.com called Beautiful Machines that has quite a few chapters, it's about a 4th of the way written. My main project right now though is Lionheart.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

The second Hobbit movie! I loved the first, and I love Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberpatch; so I can't wait to see Smaug. I love all the Lord of the Rings movies, but Ironically, the Hobbit is the only book by Tolkien I've actually read.

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I almost exclusively read fantasy and scifi, even though I know that's a bad habit for a writer to have. The first books I read by myself were Brian Jacques Redwall books and that's part of the reason I write in third person. I loved Suzanne Collins Gregor the Overlander series, and Jim Butcher's Dresden chronicles.

I adore Darren Shan's Cirque Du Freak and Demonata series for their gore and action I mostly read books from the teen section but no exclusively, and I really love Tamora Pierce's Wild Magic and Beka Cooper series. My all time favorite authors are Douglas Adams, Dan Wells and David Wong, and my favorite book is probably John Dies At The End and it's sequel, This Book is Full of Spiders. I love the sarcastic narrator style like Lemony Snicket, Douglas Adams and David Wong have.

There's really too many to say so here's a quick list of the rest: Holly Black, Brenna Yovanoff, Chris Wooding, Amelia-Atwater Rhodes, Philip Pullman.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1. A Swiss army knife
2. An enormous roll of duck tape
3. A block of magnesium with a bit of iron for starting fires.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

Yes, but we'll see where I am when it get's finished.

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

Actually it was meeting my friend Sam in junior high that started it off; I'd been dabbling with stories before but had never really written more than a page. We were both avid readers and loved discussing the books we read. We kept hearing about a book called Twilight and after reading it we decided we could write a better story; so we started to work on that.

That summer Sam showed me a writing site she'd found called Booksie, and we both agreed we didn't want to put our joint story on there for fear someone would steal it, so we both thought up new ideas and got to work. We still have the joint story we were writing, but we agreed to put it on the backburner until we got good enough to do it justice. We've both been writing ever since.
Excerpt

You were a lion born man.

You were a King as well. Although you had no crown or septer, you were a king if I ever saw one. Regal, distinguished. It was written in your measured gait and your hard bronzed eyes. You demanded respect without question, without command. You answered to no one, and few tried to make you. Some men are born dogs, barking and biting to make any effect, but you were a lion in your kingdom, uneffected by the yapping and nipping smaller creatures tried to phase you with. You were born a King in a shed, like the carpenter from Nazareth, and the dogs born in castles and called 'kings' are pale slurs on your name. I know so, for I have seen Kings throughout all ages, watched them rise like the sun and fall in blazes of glory. I loved your golden frame and hard bronze eyes, you King of kings.

But how I loathe you now, Golden One. There is no blaze of glory awaiting you-- your blazing zenith goes out like a self-snuffing candle, like a soft whimper in the dark. I loathe how you cast away youself like Lucifer out of heaven, how you forfeit without a thought what other men would kill and die for. How far you have fallen, Lionheart.

But you don't remember any of this, do you? You forfeited memory as well as Kingship. And your doom is all you will ever have to show for it. I laugh at your pain. Fallen, Outcast, Pariah, and not even knowing why. But I know, for I have loved and loathed you. And I will tell you how you inflicted all this upon yourself, little lion man.

Because I love your pain.

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

My name is Victoria, and I’ve been writing for about 2 years now. I’m working on publishing my story Wake Up Call and am looking forward to writing my next big romance. I live in Rockford with my boyfriend, Will, and our two cats, Ace and Puma. They are little brats, but I love them. My boyfriend included. I work at a hardware store and in my spare time, I enjoy reading and writing. I’m a huge fan of “The Vampire Diaries”, “True Blood”, and “Teen Wolf” and I try my hardest to be sure that I never miss an episode. Oh and I’m obsessed with chicken. It’s my favorite. Well, mostly the chicken skin, so if anyone eats chicken around me, I steal their skin when they’re not looking. I almost always get caught.

2. What types of books do you write?

I enjoy writing romance. It seems to be the easiest for me. I’m working on a fantasy story, but of course it will be full of romance. Can’t live without it.

3. How many books have you written?

I’ve written about 11 books, but only five are completed. Wake Up Call is my only completed book that I feel is written well. The others were kind of written in a rush. I’m going to change that with my new stories. No more writing rushed stuff.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

I’m looking forward to reading “Wake” by Amanda Hocking. I just ordered it and I’m waiting for it to come through mail. I’m in the middle of reading her Trylle Novel now and they’re really good. She was a self-published author and just got picked up by a big company. And for movies, pretty much anything that involves Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds, Jason Statham or Alex Pettyfer. I love them.

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I really enjoy reading Fantasy, Vampire, and anything that has to do with Romance. For a while there I was stuck on only Vampire books. I couldn’t get away from them, but then I started reading on Wattpad and started writing my own romance stories.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

If I were stranded on a desert island, I would have to have

1. A book, of course.
2. Some chicken or else I’d die.
3. And…this last one is hard. Probably my computer so that I could write, although, I suppose it wouldn’t work on a desert island. Can’t I just count paper and pen as one item, then?

7. Are you considering a sequel?

I don’t believe that I will be writing a sequel. I would only write a sequel to Fantasy work. Probably not for any of my Romances.

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

Actually, Wattpad inspired me to become a writer. I downloaded Wattpad so that I could read free books and I saw that you could upload your own work. I thought, why not? Therefore, I wrote my first story called “Some Roommate” and it got a lot of attention. It inspired me to keep going even though I didn’t think it was all that great. So thank you everyone for standing by me and inspiring me to become a writer and to keep writing. If it weren’t for you guys, then I wouldn’t be self -publishing my work.

Excerpt

My heart stopped and suddenly it was hard to breathe. His voice always had that effect on me. It was like poison slowly running through my veins killing me bit by bit. Like a drug that I couldn’t get enough of even though I was almost down to my last breath.

Jace took a step forward and grabbed my hand. He slowly trailed his fingers over my face and backed me into the wall. My heart stopped again, if that was even possible. “You can’t leave,” he whispered. “I need you.” His warm breath kissed my lips as he bit his bottom lip and placed both of his hands around my face. They were warm and soft to the touch. Too big for my fragile face, although I wanted to bury myself in them. “Breathe. There is no one here except the two of us. Breathe,” he whispered.
