The truth is that Jess knows she screwed up.
She's made mistakes, betrayed her best friend, and now she's paying for it. Her dad is making her spend the whole summer volunteering at the local soup kitchen.
The truth is she wishes she was the care-free party-girl everyone thinks she is.
She pretends it's all fine. That her "perfect" family is fine. But it's not. And no one notices the lie...until she meets Flynn. He's the only one who really sees her. The only one who listens.
The truth is that Jess is falling apart – and no one seems to care.
But Flynn is the definition of "the wrong side of the tracks." When Jess's parents look at him they only see the differences-not how much they need each other. They don't get that the person who shouldn't fit in your world... might just be the one to make you feel like you belong.

Author Interview
1. Tell a little about yourself. What you do when you’re not writing? What are your aspirations for the future?
When I’m not writing I am mom to a pretty cool 14 year old boy. I have a husband who loves to fix up old cars. I just started working a part time job to get me out of the house a little more and balance my writing life. As for my aspirations, I love this question so much, mostly because I’m starting to get old so it kind of makes me giggle. Of course I still have aspirations, it’s just that my timeline has narrowed a little. I was actually thinking about this last night and decided to do a vision board. I’m trying to be a more positive person these days and really want to explore ways to improve my health, both emotional and physical.
2. Have any particular novels or writers influenced your writing?
I grew up loving Judy Blume and SE Hinton. I think both of those writers influenced me because they were the stories I most related to and therefore am drawn to write. I also deeply loved A Wrinkle In Time but I am more prone to write realistic vs. fantasy. And of course, when I read Looking For Alaska I fell in love with John Green’s writing style, which is very different than mine, but similar in perhaps theme.
3. Give us some backstory behind The Truth About Us. Where and when did you write it?
The Truth About Us was kind of inspired by work I’ve done volunteering at shelters. The idea of the story actually kind of started where Tess loses Flynn’s little brother at the shelter. Of course I had to build up a whole lot of story around that one scene. This is my last contracted book with Sourcebooks and I wrote it at home to a deadline. I had an entirely different ending when I submitted it to my editor Aubrey Poole.
4. What was your favourite part of writing The Truth About Us?
I really enjoy trying to create fun secondary characters and I had A LOT of fun writing dialoage for her and Wilfred, the old man Tess meets at the soup kitchen she works at.
5. Which fictional character would you like to take to dinner and why?
Harry Potter because MAGIC!!
6. What is one of the most surprising things you've learned as a writer?
That nothing every really takes away writer insecurity. And that bad reviews, while unpleasant, aren’t the end of the world.
