Book Description:
Fragnut. Confused? Well so is everyone else at Lumiere Hall Prep when sixteen-year-old Rubie Keane rolls in from Trinidad and Tobago talking her weird lingo. Not that she minds the culture confusion; she's determined to leave the past behind her and be overlooked—but a certain stoic blue blood is equally as determined to foil her plans.
Gil Stromeyer's offbeat personality initially makes Rubie second-guess his sanity, but she suspects his erratic outbursts of violence mask a deeper issue in his troubled, charmed life. Despite his disturbing behavior, a gradual bond forms between the two. However, on the night of the annual Stromeyer gala, events unfold that leave Rubie stripped of her dignity and kick Gil's already fragile world off its axis.
Both their well-kept secrets are uncovered, but Gil's revelation proves that sometimes the best remedy for a bad case of lost identity, is a dash of comradery from an ally packed with flavor.

The Goonies. I saw that movie and was like: “You mean someone thought up of that story? Ok… I’m going to be a writer.”
2. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Having the few people who read it say they thought it was hilarious. I think every book should make you laugh out loud somewhere.
3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Little Women – it was the first book I ever read.
4. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
The ability to control water. I think the sound effects and possibilities would be cool. (Bloop, bloop, bloop)
5. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
You'll close the book with a smile on your lips
6. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
‘The Cilantro in Apple Pie’ is a trilogy, so book 2 is my current work in progress. I might write a romance in the future too.
7. Do you write as you go or do you have the book planned before you start the first draft?
I usually have a storyboard going before I start but it’s subject to change as new ideas pop up in my head.
8. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
9. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Alaska - went there and wanted to stay
10. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I definitely see a great deal of myself in the main character Rubie but I also see myself in the lead male character Gil too. He does the stuff I wish I had the balls to do
About the Author
Kimberley Nadine Knights knew when she kept willingly opting out of parties so she could stay home and write, that she was destined to be an author.
Born and raised in the tropical twin islands of Trinidad & Tobago, when this Caribbean girl isn’t creating new plotlines for her ever growing lineup of fictional characters, she spends her time strumming her guitar to indie rock songs and snapping once in a lifetime photos halfway across the globe in countries such as Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and France.
She's an avid fan of The Walking Dead series and firmly believes that The Food Network should consider her being a judge on the next Chopped challenge.
The Cilantro in Apple Pie is her debut novel.

how did you begin writing this novel?
ReplyDeleteFunny...it started as a joke then it grew into something I needed to write as I met interesting people during my travels
DeleteWhat is your primary inspiration when sitting down to start a novel?
ReplyDeleteI'm really not sure what exactly inspires me but I always sit down and think: "Hmm...how would this idea play out as a movie?"
DeleteI want my book to lay out good as a film, so I write to make people react as if they were sitting down in a bucket seat eating pop-corn...
What made you choose the genre that you write in? Have you always written in that genre? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI've always loved YA. To me it's just relatable...you're either a young adult or wish you were a young adult again. Across the board appeal! So yeah, YA is my preferred genre but I'm definitely playing around with some ideas that are branching out to NA & Adult Romance...
DeleteHow old were you when you decided you wanted to be a writer?
ReplyDelete10 but I only thought of it seriously around the age of 20
Deletewhat is your favorite food?
ReplyDeletelasagne or pizza - yeah boring answer lol
DeleteThe Goonies!!! I loved that answer, that movie is epic! What was it specifically about the movie that gave you the idea to be a writer? Was it the story line itself? The actors? I'm curious to know because I seriously love that movie :D
ReplyDeleteIt was the storyline and the way how it started off so ordinary and ended up to be such an extraordinary adventure!! Also the characters: a bunch of 13 yr olds, an older brother, the older brother's love interest, older brother's love interest's friend, a bunch of lousy crooks. I mean, what's not to love about that movie!
DeleteIt hit me hard the first time I saw it and I've never forgotten the impact it had on me.
What's in store for your next novel? Any more odd flavor pairings?
ReplyDeleteOh yeah...I'm keeping the odd food pairings for sure lol.
DeleteThe next novel is from the male lead Gil's POV so it's gonna be way more angst and raw grit.
Do you have the ending when you begin the novel?
ReplyDeleteMost of the time, that's the ONLY thing I have lol.
DeleteThe middle is where it gets muddled up and jostled around.
What comes first for you--the story or the characters?
ReplyDeleteOh always the characters...then the plot forms around them
DeleteLolol how did you come up with the title for the book ?
ReplyDeleteIt's different right? I know lol.
DeleteOnce you read the book you'll understand; but basically Rubie is the flavour that saves Gil from his apple pie cookie cutter life.
Hence - The Cilantro in Apple Pie :)
who could play Rubie Keane in a movie?
ReplyDeleteOooh good question.
DeleteIt's hard because one actress can't come to mind but off the top of my head it would be a mixture of Olivia Munn, Zendaya & Moon Bloodgood.
If you weren't a writer, what would you be?
ReplyDeleteExactly what my day job is now...a Marketing Officer. Marketing rocks!
DeleteWhat made you choose the romance genre?
ReplyDeleteIt's actually not a romance...not until book 3 that is.
DeleteBut Book 3 will be a full blown romance. Stay tuned why don't you :)
Hello Kimberly, how long did it take to write The Cilantro in Apple Pie?
ReplyDeleteQuite awhile actually, because it took me some time to find the correct plot direction. I'm not a fast writer (yes I'm flawed lol)...but as life went on and I visited new places and met different people, those experiences influenced my writing.
DeleteI was muddling over it for 3 yrs but I finished it in about a year.
Which comes first, the plot or the characters, when you begin writing a book?
ReplyDeleteAlways the characters :) At least for me...
DeleteWhich actor/actress would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?
ReplyDeleteGood question.
DeleteRubie is complicated, looks-wise. She'll probably be a mixture of Olivia Munn, Zendaya & Moon Bloodgood.
Gil - a younger, taller version of Cillian Murphy I suppose... :)
how many hours you spend to write story for this book?
ReplyDeleteHours in total, I can't say but every day I try to write for at least 3 hours :)
DeleteDo you base any of your characters on people you know?
ReplyDeleteSome yes, but it's an exaggerated version of that real person most times
DeleteIf you have a number of ideas for stories running around your head how do you decide which to approach first?
ReplyDeleteThe idea that has a beginning, middle and end I approach first. Sometimes you have lots of ideas but they're only concepts that get you excited; and you have no idea how to get from Chp 1 to 'The End.'
DeleteStart the one with a definite route
What is your favorite genre of books to read?
ReplyDeleteParanormal Romance
DeleteDo you tour to do booksignings?
ReplyDeleteNot yet, but I'd love to
DeleteWhere do you come up with the names for your characters?
ReplyDeleteFor my main characters, I try to use normal names that are rarely used.
DeleteDoes that make sense? lol
Where do you come up with the names for your characters?
ReplyDeleteThis book sounds great and I would love to read it.
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate the support and I would love if you entered their world.
DeleteI promise you :) at the end...
I love how the colloquialism seeps into the language of your characters. Are you coining new words, too?
ReplyDeleteNo need to coin...these are words usually used in Trinidad & Tobago.
DeleteSo stay tuned for Book 2 & 3 to discover more!
Oh, very cool about the words from Trinidad & Tobago! Have you thought of linking/submitting your book to We Need Diverse Books?
ReplyDeleteAnd I love Chopped! Do you have a favorite judge?
I didn't know about We Need Diverse Books, so thanks for telling me. I'll contact them.
DeleteMy fave judge is Maneet Chauhan
What motivates you to write? In the same breath, how do you get passed writers block?
ReplyDeleteMusic and movies.
DeleteWith writer's block I force myself to write 1000 words a day or start a storyboard on a new idea.
That is great that you push yourself.
DeleteWhen do you find is the best time for you to write? :)
ReplyDeleteAt night!!! Ideas are more vivid for me and I think better.
DeleteSo I usually write on weekends from 7pm - 6am :)
Do you have any pets? What is your favorite animal?
ReplyDeleteI have one beloved Rottweiler named George :)
ReplyDeleteIs there a message in your novel that you want your readers to grasp?
ReplyDeleteDifferent is good.
DeleteThe book sounds very intriguing, looking forward to reading it!
ReplyDeleteI hope you do read it! And pls help us indie authors out by writing a review on Goodreads and Amazon afterward. It's a tremendous help :)
DeleteWho is your favorite author? Do you draw inspiration from their work?
ReplyDeleteI'm probably the only author to say this, but I don't really have a favorite author. That's horrible, I know.
DeleteSounds like an interesting book! Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteYou're most welcome Melanie!
DeleteI'd really like to thank everyone here who's asked me questions and given their support. It means the world to me and I appreciate it to the max!
ReplyDeleteWhat is your next book going to be about?
ReplyDeleteProbably late next year...fingers crossed!
DeleteThis is a book our tween grand daughter would enjoy.
ReplyDeletethank you

DeleteI love the title, it sounds like a great book :)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I hope you enjoy reading it :)
DeleteI enjoyed reading your interview! (I always wanted to live in Alsaka...doesn't look like it will happen any time soon for me!)
ReplyDeleteDeborah
Never say never! lol
DeleteI love the title of the book and the book cover! It sounds like a really good story!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the support! Pls pick up a copy and join Team #AuthorChestBump !
DeleteDoes strumming your guitar ever let your thoughts wander enough to add to your writing or change what you have written?
ReplyDeleteALWAYS! Music is basically your thoughts transformed into notes. So sometimes I start strumming my guitar and the melody leads me to a better scene or a more cohesive plotline :)
DeleteThanks for the great giveaway!
ReplyDeleteWhat is your biggest inspiration?
Life, music and movies
