Description:
Her powers have
been hobbled. Her enemies are growing stronger.
Old loves
challenge her. And her worst betrayer may be herself.
Necromancer Ruby
Montagne is battling for her life in the realm of demons. Unfairly branded for
the death of a fellow necromancer, she’s got to prove her innocence without the
full use of her magic. And the real culprit is still on the loose.
While someone is
stalking her friends among the witches, Ruby searches for answers inside the
dark intrigues of both the demon and necromancer worlds. Ruby must confront
this new, sinister threat while reconciling her feelings for her former lover,
a demon warrior. Only it’s difficult . . . because a sexy vampire is making it
clear that he’d like to be a lot more than just friends.
The competition
for Ruby’s trust heats up as the enemy pushes her toward a dark side that could
threaten the entire realm. Yet what can Ruby do when she’s not even sure what
she is? With the fabric separating the realms at stake, she must decide whom to
trust. But will the ultimate betrayal be her own?

Author Interview
1. What inspired you to write your first book?
It was really the characters speaking to me and telling me this story. I never thought my heroine would be a necromancer, but once I began writing the story, I became more and more intrigued with exploring her character, and how she coexists with this intense power over the dead.
2. Do you have a specific writing style?
I plot to a certain point. I find doing that helps avoid atrocious rewrites later. After that, I let things flow and see where the characters take me. Usually, the dialog comes first with character internalizations, or what I’d call the meat of the scene. Then I fill in with descriptions and stuff like, she walked toward the door or he grabbed her arm. Ugh. I really hate writing those lines but they are necessary. I try to vary them as much as possible.
3. How did you come up with the title for your book?
Each book explores or deals with a certain theme related to Ruby, the heroine’s journey. So the first book, The Necromancer’s Seduction, focuses on how her power and love interest seduce her. In book two, The Necromancer’s Betrayal, Ruby faces various perceived betrayals of herself, and she takes some actions that are perceived as betrayals by people she cares about. It’s a really tough book for her. The third and final book will be titled The Necromancer’s Redemption. You can probably see where that’s going.
4. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Not a specific message, but as noted under question three above, the themes related to Ruby’s journey.
5. How much of the book is realistic?
LOL. Thankfully not the supernatural creatures or the demon realm, but the settings in San Francisco are real. I tried to find some interesting places for the scenes to take place and San Francisco has some very cool, unique places. One interesting fact I use in the second book is how San Francisco moved all their cemeteries to outlying areas long ago (property values are too high in San Francisco to allow cemeteries). One of the neighboring communities called Colma absorbed most of San Francisco’s dead. The dead in Colma outnumber the living by over 1,000 to one. (The City’s website contains the motto: It’s great to be alive in Colma) Ruby is an anthropology professor and we get glimpses of things she is researching or teaching and I drew upon my experiences in the Peace Corps in West Africa for those tidbits.
6. What book are you reading now?
I’m re-reading the Outlander books. The show has been wonderful and I read the books so long ago, so I wanted to experience Jamie and Claire again in the books.
7. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I’ve kind of been going retro lately I stumbled upon a speculative/horror fiction author, Algernon Blackwood, which I’m really interested in checking out.
8. What are your current projects?
I’m also writing a pirate historical romance series called The Sea Rover’s Passion and am in the middle of book two.
9. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
I enjoyed researching about necromancer abilities and expanding upon their mythology. How did they originate? The answer to this question forms the basis for the series and the main conflict of the book. It’s very exciting. I found all sort of stuff regarding necromancer powers in mythology and in gaming. Necromancers can do lots of crazy stuff, such as extracting disease from the dead and inflicting them on the living.
10. What were the challenges (research, psychological etc) in bringing your story to life?
Definitely conceptualizing and writing scenes in the demon realm. How to make that world unique and interesting without copying every other fantasy realm already imagined. Hard to do. I drew upon ancient cultures like the Sumerians to imagine my architecture and added some descriptions influenced by both H.P. Lovecraft and Clive Barker.
Thank you for having me as your guest today. I enjoyed the questions!
About the Author
Mimi Sebastian raised
herself on books and the strange and unusual, and an unhealthy dose of comics
and movies. When a career as a punk guitarist failed to materialize, she
completed her degree in urban planning, spent two years in the Ivory Coast with
the Peace Corps, and another three years in Brazil. By day, she debates the
merits of transport oriented development, by night she writes about
necromancers and pirates. She’s convinced she could live off coffee, ice cream,
and comic books, but is sure only one of those is good for her health.
She's a member
of Romance Writers of America and the Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal
chapter of RWA. A transplant from the beaches of Florida, Mimi now wanders the
desert in Phoenix, AZ, and attempts to balance writing with a day career,
fantastic family, and household diva: her Amazon parrot.
