Chapter 6

Our drinks arrive, and I take mine with haste, sucking down the minty fresh alcohol, hoping it will soothe the butterflies that are suddenly wreaking havoc in my stomach, making me feel all light-headed and dizzy—a thirty-two-year-old teenager in heat.

After Nicholas slides his empty glass down the bar, he takes my hand and nods toward the dance floor where couples are draped all over each other, laughing and grooving underneath the dim lights in this steamy club.

“Dance with me, Natasha.” The intensity in his voice means there is only one answer to that question.

I let Nicholas guide me out to the center of the floor, vaguely recalling all of the tiring arguments I’ve had with Ethan in recent years, begging him to put off his work for just one night so we could do something fun. All the times I suggested that we take a weekend off from our insanely busy lives, from infertility, from writing and researching and photo shoots, to go somewhere exciting together. To remember who we were as a couple, why we’d fallen for each other all those years ago.

But the nights out, the weekends away—they never did happen. Ethan just wouldn’t carve out the time, make the commitment. It was never important enough to him. Everything else came first.

And now, here I am in the middle of a booming Los Angeles dance floor, finding the excitement and romance I’ve been craving for so long with a man I’ve only met a handful of times, a man who cannot keep his eyes or his hands off me.

And I must admit—it feels incredible.

So incredible, in fact, that any hints of guilt I may have been harboring over my decision to say yes to Nicholas’ proposal have been abandoned at the door of this club.

A sultry piano and sax tune moves over the dance floor, prompting Nicholas to wrap his arms around my waist and pull me snugly into his chest. Our hips find each other instantly, a perfect fit as they sway in time to the music, grinding together in urgent, passionate waves. He presses his cheek to mine, the heat of his breath running down my neck and over my breasts, making my core throb with desire.

Song after song, we dance like this—our bodies intertwined, not able to get enough. And with each new song, I feel myself unraveling even further in his arms, marveling at the way his body moves so naturally with mine, at how comfortable I feel letting loose in front of him.

As the beat slows down, Nicholas threads his fingers through my long hair and dips me back, running his hungry lips down my neck. When we resurface, I am flushed, hot, and ready.

His mouth finds my ear. “I want nothing more than to ravage you right now.”

I don’t wait for him to say more. Instead, the inner seductress I didn’t know I had gives him a suggestive grin, takes his hand, and leads him out of the club.

Excerpt from The Accidental Socialite

I was practically down on my knees praying they would have a table for one when the Gap model/waiter from the other day spotted me and came over.

“What are you doing here?” he asked, eyes darting around behind me.

“Ummm, you serve food and I’m hungry, isn’t that normally how restaurants work?” I was clearly doing all I could to squash that ‘Canadians are super nice’ rumour.

“Come with me.” He grabbed my arm and dragged me to the back of the restaurant. “No, I mean what are you doing out after last night?”

I knew I looked like shit, but how did he know what kind of night I had? He grew impatient with my obvious hangover induced mental handicap and shoved today’s copy of The Sun in my face.

It took me a minute to register what I was seeing but once I did, I dropped onto the banquette in shock. There I was on the front cover of England’s best selling national newspaper in an apparent romantic embrace with a man I’d never seen before. The paper named him as Stuart Smith, superstar Chelsea footballer, notorious ladies man, and apparently married to some pop star named Kerry. Poop.

Gap model/waiter sat down next to me. “What happened? Are you dating him?”

“Uh –Uh-, No! No I’m not! I was at The Box and there were all these flashes and I tripped and I don’t know. Oh my god! Seriously, I got here YESTERDAY!” Why was I on the front cover of this paper?

The article insinuated that I was some home wrecker that this Stuart guy had been fooling around with behind the back of his beautiful wife. Easy, I was just going to have to call up the paper and get this whole thing fixed. No big deal. And it was a pretty good picture of me, so that was an upside to the whole debacle.

The waiter was freaking out. “Listen honey my name is Duncan and this is my number. I know someone at The Sun and I’m sure he’ll sort this out for you. Are you hungry? Eggs Benedict again?” This guy seemed to think this was a bigger deal than I did. My brain knew I should be slightly more alarmed, but my head was still clouded and would be until I had food.

“Yes please.” I gave him my biggest smile. Nobody actually cared about this, right?

I picked at my meal and pretended not to notice everyone staring at me. My appetite was gone, which was not only strange, but also tragic because the hollandaise was shouting ‘eat me now!’ Why on earth did this paper jump to a conclusion that was so clearly false? And why did everyone believe what they read?

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

My name is Laiza Millan and I am a Journalism major in college here in the States!

2. What types of books do you write?

I like to write about the ‘opposites attract’ romance, drama books

3. How many books have you written?

I’ve written fanfiction before, but I only have one original book so far.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

I’m looking for the last book of the Nevermore trilogy by Kelly Creagh. That series is so amazing, I honestly can’t wait for the third book to come out!

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I like different types of books! A mixture of adventure, romance, and drama.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1. Books to entertain me
2. A helpful tool to cut some trees to build myself a boat
3. Drinking water

7. Are you considering a sequel?

Okay, personally, I am not a huge fan of sequels. So no, I am not going to create one myself.

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

I’m not really sure. I just remembered in elementary school, I would keep this journal and constantly write on it about my thoughts. Then being in middle school and just randomly had the urge to write a story. I did that for a little bit. Then in high school, my friend and I would write a fictional story about us as the characters, instead of paying attention in class. Ever since then I just kept writing on and off.

Guest Post: The Four Seasons of Broken Family

As much as I would love to take credit for the topic idea, this was something suggested by the blog host…and a brilliant one at that. If I had to pick characters from Broken Family to represent each of the four seasons, who would they be and why?

Winter:

It would have to be Stephanie Gass, the daughter of the victim. Stephanie is a moody teenager, and the freezing temperatures and snow/ice storms that accompany the winter season are enough to make even the most optimistic person a little unstable (assuming you aren’t a spoiled individual living in a temperate area). Furthermore, Stephanie can’t leave for college soon enough, just like many of us are anxiously awaiting the arrival of spring.

Spring:

Ira Batista, the younger of the two deputies, is energetic and full of life, similar to the rejuvenation we feel when spring finally reigns. She’s also a very sociable person. Like many of us, I’m sure Ira enjoys the flourishing plant life, the constant chirping of birds, and even the traditional mating period…for wildlife of course.

Summer:

Without a doubt, this goes to Deputy Janelle Bowden. She’s a little hot-under-the-collar, so much that even a 100-degree day probably feels cool to her. Aggressive and willing to say what’s on her mind, Janelle’s temper can get the better of her. At least the rest of us have an excuse for being like this three months out of the year. It’s called the heat.

Autumn:

Sheriff Joe Mauro wins hands down. His calming influence is like a crisp, autumn breeze blowing in after a massive heat wave. Joe is also an understanding and compassionate man. Not only is he grateful for what he has (Thanksgiving is his favorite holiday), but Joe enjoys the simple things in life. Now if he could just find a woman. Psst. Read the book and maybe he will.

Excerpt from Broken Family

“Who’s the victim?” A woman’s voice inquired from behind.

Joe didn’t even bother turning around. He knew who it was.

“Claire Gass,” he said. “Is Ira with you?”

“She’s coming down the hill right now,” the woman answered.

Joe rotated his head with his knee to the ground, looking in the direction of the deputy. Janelle Bowden, an African-American woman with wide brown eyes, stared back at him. Her coffee-colored hair was tied up in a bun.

“Looks like someone hit her over the head and dumped the body here,” Joe said. “A fisherman discovered her early this morning when he was putting his trailer in the water.”

“A forced drowning?” Janelle asked.

Joe shook his head. “I don’t think so. The body would be bloated and show signs of decay. Plus, it can take days or weeks for a drowned body to surface. They usually float on top of the water, not wash up on the shore of a still lake. This body is fresh. I figure she died in the last twelve hours.”

Complications
Author: K.A. Salidas
Series: Chronicles of the Uprising, Part 2
Release Date: April 14, 2014

Book Description:
Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Magistrate, Mira travels west, toward the coast. With three weakened human fugitives accompanying her, she searches for the mythical land of Sanctuary.

After encountering a pack of wolf shifters, headed by the charismatic—and brazen—Stryker, Mira learns that Sanctuary is real after all.  Caldera Grove: home of the Otherkin. Hidden in the mouth of a dormant volcano, it has protected its residents from humans since the early days following the great cataclysm. For Mira— a vampire— Caldera Grove is a land of peace; an escape from the relentless persecution of the humans who once enslaved her, and an end to the daily struggle and bloodshed of being a gladiator.

For the humans accompanying her, Caldera Grove means death. Humans, greedy and untrustworthy creatures, are destroyed before they can penetrate its borders.

To plead her case for entry into Caldera, Mira must abandon her companions, albeit temporarily, and follow Stryker into the heart of the city. What she finds within Caldera Grove presents her with an unenviable decision between her own desires for freedom and peace, or honor and the human companions who risked it all for her.

About the Author

Endowed with special powers and abilities, beyond those of mortal women,  I can get the munchkin off to gymnastics, cheerleading, Girl Scouts, and swim lessons.  I can put hot food on the table for dinner while assisting with homework, baths, and bedtime… And, I still find time to keep the hubby happy (nudge nudge wink wink). I can do all of this and still have time to write my novels.

Sorry… I can’t even write that with a straight face.

Lies all lies.

Here’s the reality. I’m a sleep-deprived, overworked, mom who just doesn’t know the meaning of the word balance. I try so hard to do it all, (be super mom, wife, & author) and at the end of the day I fall face forward into the couch.

Yes, you read that right, I tend to sleep on the couch. It’s a point of frustration for my hubby and a thing of comedy for my daughter. Imagine waking up to your little child yelling, “Mom slept on the couch again!!!”

Because being supermom (or trying to) means a lot of time devoted to family, writing is often done when said family is peacefully snoozing away. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen asleep with my laptop, on the couch. It just happens. Then, bright and early at 7am either my hubby (on his way to work) or my daughter (getting ready for school) wakes me up.

Writing is my passion. It’s a part of me. More than just a hobby, it’s a compulsion. I have to do it. If I don’t do at least one writing related thing each day I get cranky.

Hopefully, my passion can be your entertainment!

Excerpt from The Hazel Tree

Prologue

Nestled deep within the dark mountains that neighbor the Black Sea lay an ancient castle in a valley, forever hooded by a swirl of thunderous clouds. It looked as though some god or deity had taken an inkbottle and poured the contents into the dip between the mountains. It cloaked the ground, the water, the stone, and even the air. To each molecule of oxygen clung a droplet of shadow, tinting the air so black no torch could pierce it. The air hung heavy, masking Waelwulf Castle and its residents. Any sign of Mother Nature’s beauty had long escaped this land, all vegetation long gone. In its place resided an evil force, something far more vicious and deadly than any visitor could imagine. It belonged to the family who lived within the impenetrable stonewalls: the royal family of Wulf, the head of the Black Sea Pack, the sole survivor of the Great Wars, the most ancient and powerful pack on planet Earth.
In front of their home was a vast plain, stretching deep into the darkness. Two massive wolves emerged from the shadows simultaneously. Upon catching sight of each other’s glittering eyes in the blackness, their hackles rose and growls erupted from deep within their chests. Circling slowly with teeth bared, each step was calculated, measured, carefully placed. Wolves crossing paths on the barren grounds that surrounded the castle were rare. A direct challenge such as this was always met with death for the offending party. Both wolves had this in mind as they faced each other off.
A howling wind brushed across them then, curling around their paws and tails and the hills of their tense raised shoulders before sweeping into the darkness. With it though the wolves caught each other’s scents and relaxed with recognition. They moved in unison towards the castle.
They reached the scarred metal gates that stood a few dozen paces from the castle’s front door. For centuries all that had stood between the foe in battles and the castle had been these gates, somehow untouchable by the enemy. Warriors believed it was protected by magic.
The wolves shifted into their human forms. "Axel," one said, nodding. His appearance was much like his wolf: black hair, confident brown eyes, square jaw, long legs and a tall frame. Even his gait was like his wolf’s, the slow cadence of a predator.
"Robinson," Axel said in return. He was short with a brush of red hair across his head and jaw, and small, nervous eyes. He didn’t have any of the grace his comrade had, due to his short stature.
After the brief exchange, they took the time to make themselves presentable, straightening the rumples in their clothing. The old gate creaked open, allowing them to pass and approach the castle’s front doors. Robinson stepped forward then and knocked evenly three times.
After a long pause, one of the doors slowly creaked open, revealing a thin young man dressed in plain black clothing with royal red embroidering, leaning heavily on a wooden cane. Recognizing the two men, he quickly hobbled aside. They strode past him without any acknowledgement. It was later, after they had moved out of earshot of the handicapped porter, that Axel said something.
"Learn a lesson from Dane, Robinson. Never ever question your superiors. Look at him, once one of the kingdom’s finest warriors. And now condemned to a life of servitude, and with a damaged leg! He doesn’t even have the option of marrying, poor fellow."
Robinson merely nodded. There was not much too be said, in any case, as he knew more about Dane’s offense than Axel thought or knew himself.
Any chance to continue the conversation was ended as they reached the end of the cold corridor. Axel reached out almost hesitantly, and knocked a specific beat on the plain little door. A peephole was opened, revealing a menacing eye staring down upon the two men.
“I am here to see King Cronan. He is expecting me,” Robinson said confidently, silently challenging the eye to deny him.
“I am also here to see His Majesty,” Axel added, a slight quaver to his voice.
The eye flickered from one spy to the other several times before taking a few slow, long blinks. After a long minute, the eye finally withdrew itself and the peephole slammed shut. Then the door opened to reveal the owner of the eye, a large man, taller than Robinson and thicker than Axel’s height, with an array of battle scars that shone in the light as he grunted at them and led them down a narrow hallway.
It eventually opened into a large, majestic room. The walls were covered in looted swords, shields, heads of enemies, and other treasures; priceless paintings of the kings who had ruled over Waelwulf Castle long ago were hung over the multiple crackling fireplaces. Yet even with the candlelight and the fires burning, the room was still dark, darker than much of the castle Robinson and Axel had traveled through.
The most ornate chandelier hung over a painting of a bearded man standing beside a dark brown wolf, their shoulders touching. In the center of the room was almost an exact replica of the portrait, minus the wolf, who had simply been the same man posing in his other form. In fact, it appeared as if the King had barely aged a day since the portrait was finished over sixty years ago.
"Axel. Robinson. I trust you bring news?" King Cronan asked, sipping wine from a silver goblet.
"Yes, Your Highness. I have returned with information of the Orarius Pack, as you requested," Axel announced puffing his chest out grandly.
"And you, Robinson? What do you return with?"
"I return with good news, Your Highness," Robinson replied with a shadow of a smirk. Cronan chuckled slightly, mildly impressed by Robinson’s word choice. Axel didn't find it amusing.
"Your Highness, the descendant we have been watching—his mate is with child," Axel said, disgruntled.
The King’s expression grew somber once more and he focused a penetrating gaze on Axel. "And do you know the sex of the child?"
Axel hesitated before bowing his head. "I do not, Your Highness. My deepest apologies."
"Your apologies will not tell us the gender of the offspring, Axel, no matter how deep they may be," the King said in a cold, detached voice. Axel swallowed audibly.
Suddenly the King snapped his fingers and a dozen wolves emerged from the shadows of the room. They prowled forward, snarls erupting from them one by one as they closed in on Axel.
"It will be a she-wolf, Your Highness," Robinson said calmly, as if the proceedings around him didn't bother him in the slightest—which, knowing Robinson, actually didn’t. He knew that in light of Axel’s disappointing performance, he would be rewarded for the morsel of information.
King Cronan held up a hand, signaling the wolves to halt and return to their designated spots. "And do we know anything about the garden?" he asked, looking thoroughly pleased at the vague wording of his question.
But Robinson understood perfectly. "The tree has sprouted, but it can barely be distinguished from the weeds," Robinson replied.
"So we will have to wait," said the King, making it sound more like a statement than a question. He locked his eyes onto his spy’s. Robinson did not waver, holding his gaze calmly as the atmosphere in the room grew tense until, finally the King began to chuckle and they both looked away at once.
With a flick of his wrist, King Cronan dismissed the two men. Axel was the fastest to bow and turn his back on the king. Eager to leave the room, he didn’t notice the change of his superior’s expression.
Robinson had been slower, and paused at the subtle shift in the air. “You must be wondering why I told both of you to report to me at the same time.” While the question was directed at both of them, the king’s gaze did not waver from Axel’s back. The ginger man had frozen, eyes closed, still facing the door, though there was no denying the fear that trembled through his body. Cronan continued as if he had not noticed. “You see, I suspected that one of you was, perhaps, a spy. An infiltrator.”
Robinson froze as well, despite his best efforts. No, surely no…
Another snap of Cronan’s fingers and the wolves re-emerged, more aggressive and terrifying than before. Half moved towards Axel, the others towards Robinson. Axel turned to his king. “Your Highness—please—I don’t understand.” The words slipped from his tongue and into the room before he had a chance to stop them.
That was a mistake.
Cronan’s nostrils flared and a hand twitched towards the goblet. “How can I be more clear, Axel?”
“Yes Axel, what has His Majesty said that you find so difficult to understand?” Robinson said, against his better judgment. The king’s eyes snapped to Robinson, growing ever more black but still holding a sparkle of amusement. What boring company he must keep for Robinson’s words to hold such humor.
Axel looked at Robinson, eyes full of betrayal and fear. In return Robinson looked back with remorse.
A second snap of fingers signaled two wolves to grab each of Axel’s arms. The cries echoed around the room as sharp teeth sunk into tender flesh. “You see, I think that you know more than you are revealing to me. If Robinson was able to discover the gender of the child and find the tree, surely you would be able to as well. So why not tell me? Ah, yes. Because you had something to protect. Because your loyalties lie elsewhere—with the Orarius Pack, the Coastal Pack,” Cronan spat at Axel.
“You are mistaken, Y-your Highness.” Axel’s voice hitched as the wolf holding his right arm tightened his grip, sinking his teeth deeper into the muscle. Axel’s knees gave out, and his face paled.
“I am not mistaken, Axel. You are. You pledged allegiance to the wrong pack,” the King deadpanned before drinking the rest of the liquid in his goblet. He smacked his lips a couple of times before returning his gaze to the man on his knees, now quietly sobbing. Robinson discreetly bowed his head, but turned it at a slight angle so he could catch Axel’s eye. Through the tears, the doomed man watched as Robinson mouthed sacred words to him: Father Moon, may you carry my brother’s spirit and his wolf safely to the Sacred Land and may you-
Robinson stopped and turned his head away as droplets of blood splattered across his face and screams pierced the air. The sound of tearing flesh was not unfamiliar, but it still made Robinson feel a deep, inconsolable sadness. He finished the prayer in his head, hoping it caught onto Axel’s spirit in time. Soon the screams stopped and silence fell, except for the quiet drip-drop of blood. Robinson slowly raised one hand and wiped away the red stain on his cheek. It smeared instead.
“Well then, I suppose we will just have to pay them a visit. Go find Prince Naples and tell him to get ready,” Cronan, said, continuing the conversation as if nothing had happened. And indeed, it appeared as if nothing had, the wolves having returned to the shadows while King Cronan and Robinson stood facing one another. The stench of death was easy to ignore if you tried hard enough. The sound of dripping blood, however, still echoed.
“Yes, Your Highness,” Robinson said. He stowed away his remorse and grief for Axel. They had only known each other briefly and compassion was not welcome in the Mara Negra’s court. Turning his head away, Robinson allowed himself a small triumphant smile. Everything was going according to plan.
The king rose from his seat, empty goblet in hand. He approached Axel’s torn and mangled body and lowered the goblet into one of the deeper pools of blood, making sure to fill it as much as he could before he took a sip. So perhaps it had not been wine.

Author Interview

1. Tell a little about yourself, what you do when you’re not writing, what are your aspirations for the future?

I was born in Warsaw, Poland, I speak French fluently, I have two dogs, two horses, and three black and white cats! Lately, when I’m not writing I am either at my new job at Starbucks (the same location where I wrote the majority of The Hazel Tree), with the horses at the barn, reading, or spending time with my best friend, Sam. I’m going off to college in the fall, even though I don’t know where yet, and after that move to England if possible. Ideally, I would love to be a novelist and live off of my writing, but we all know it isn’t likely. I have a few career options though, such as an editor, translator, and event planner. We will just have to see!

2. When and why did you start writing?

I’ve been writing since I was little, but I didn’t take my writing seriously until I was in the 8th grade. I had an amazing English teacher, who saw my love of stories, and encouraged me to write more and improve myself. I began writing my first novel about a pony and a girl with his guidance, because it was a story that I had to tell. (Hell, maybe one day I’ll actually finish it!)

3. Have any particular novels or writers influenced your writing?

Steig Larsson’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo had a huge impact on me in terms of writing style and plot. I loved the pacing and voice the book was written in, and have continued to work towards achieving something similar. I also grew up reading series like Heartland and Chestnut Hill by Lauren Brooke, and the Phantom Stallion series by Terri Farley. I’m sure if you compared some of my writing to their books, you would find some similarities. After all, the books we grow up reading tend to influence our writing the most.

4. Give us some back story about The Hazel Tree. Where and when did you write it?

I wanted to write my own twisted fairytale retelling with an additional supernatural twist. That’s what The Hazel Tree started out as, a retelling of Cinderella with werewolves. I also wrote it because I wanted to read a book like it, and because I wanted to point out something I find is sometimes ignored in these big classic fairytale endings– good always wins, but at what cost?

I began writing The Hazel Tree in December 2011 (in my Wellness class). It was then titled Cinderella Wolf, and I wrote most of it while in school, which took just under a year. I then took about a two-month hiatus. Then I began rewriting the entire thing (which became the big 2nd draft) and most of that was at Starbucks. I was doing it as part of my senior project, so I was working with my mentor, Greg Wilkey (author of the Mortimer Drake series). I spent over 40 hours at Starbucks writing in about a three-month period of time!

5. What was your favourite part of writing The Hazel Tree?

I’m torn between writing the Prologue and the climax. I’ve always been for sucker for imagery, and loved how the prologue turned out in that sense. The climax is also fantastic (in my opinion) and features the most “screen time” for Naples, the antagonist.

6. What does your writing schedule look like?

I do most of my writing at Starbucks now because my creativity thrives best around the sound of people and music mixed together. I also occasionally write at restaurants and dinner parties. (I once wrote in a pub for an hour. It was so much fun.) When I first sit down, it takes on average fifteen minutes of having to force myself before I get into a rhythm. I spend at least an hour writing, with usually a Passion Iced Tea or a hot Awake tea. I’m most productive when I write with Greg Wilkey, usually clocking about two thousand words in a couple hours. When writing by myself, I write about half of that.

7. Which fictional character would you like to take to dinner and why?

I would love to take Judice, one of the characters of The Hazel Tree, to dinner and have a chance to talk to her about her life before moving to the Orarius Pack, and the adjustments she had to make from being an honored war hero in Scotland to a servant for Matthias’s pack.

8. Besides your lead, do you have a favourite character in the story?

Naples, my villain, is one of my most favorite characters ever. I don’t know what my readers’ opinion of him is, but I adore him. He is insane and sadistic, with a wicked sense of humor. Maybe its just because I know what goes on in his head, but I sympathize with him a little bit. (If/when any of you read the book, feel free to drop me a line with your thoughts on Naples—I’d love to know!)

9. What is one of the most surprising things you've learned as a writer?

How bad I am at taking criticism. Not constructive criticism that helps me improve, but just plain old criticism. It happens to every writer, and everyone says to develop a thick skin and just ignore it, but I’ve found myself struggling to do so on more than one occasion. I’m not incredibly confident in my writing ability, despite people having told me I am talented on multiple occasions, and when I am feeling confident it is easily shattered. So it was hard. A couple times in the week just before publishing The Hazel Tree, I considered just deleting the entire thing.

10. Any advice for aspiring authors?

It is incredibly hard work, whether you are a novelist, playwright, poet, or short story writer. It may take you weeks, months, or even years to finish your project. But I honestly believe it is so worth it every time in the end…because you created something that no one else can.

About the Author

Julia Debski was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1996. Her family moved around a lot during her childhood before finally settling down in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It wasn't until the 8th grade that she found her passion for writing. It was thanks to a particularly inspiring English teacher and a story that needed to be told. So she began to write, and she never stopped.

Four years later she found herself with nearly a dozen started novels and short stories. As junior in high school she was introduced to Greg Wilkey, a self-published independent author of four novels. He soon became a mentor to her as she worked to write and self-publish her own novel. After two years of hard work, and a nearly a year of mentorship The Hazel Tree was published in October 2013.

Excerpt from Hawthorne

Noah closed in on the convertible, giving the nearby grounds a cursory look. The lawn was meticulous, the beds overflowing with sprays of purple garden phlox which trailed around the bend in the road and disappeared. A riot of white and rust-red irises backed the smaller purple flowers, their leaves deep green and glossy. Overhead, Spanish moss swayed only occasionally atop a maze of live oak, more likely a result of a passing swarm of insects than an actual air current. The land was still. If there were tourists snapping photos of the historic plantation — or doing anything else — he didn't see them. But someone had been there. The car was certainly real, even if that too-familiar scream had been a figment of his imagination.

Wasn’t it always?

Resigned to another night alone with his memories, Noah pivoted.

And found himself nose to nose with Emma Grace.

Astounded, he opened his mouth, then closed it. He wanted to reach for her, but his arms refused the notion; they hung uselessly by his sides, the effort futile. His mouth wasn't much on cooperation, either. Finally, he found his tongue. "Em—"

Her expression cut him off. Green eyes wide, skin pale, her small frame shaking, she spoke. "I saw her, Noah. She's back." The words, nearly soundless, seemed to catch in the thick air. Lingering. Threatening.

And ripping the heart from his chest.

About the Author

Sarah and her husband of what he calls “many long, long years” live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they’re asleep. She never dreamed of becoming an author, but as a homeschooling mom, she often jokes she writes fiction because if she wants anyone to listen to her, she has to make them up. (As it turns out, her characters aren’t much better than the kids). When not buried under piles of laundry, she may be found adrift in the Atlantic (preferably on a boat) or seeking that ever-elusive perfect writing spot where not even the kids can find her.

She loves creating unforgettable stories while putting her characters through an unkind amount of torture—a hobby that has nothing to do with living with six children. (Really.) Though she adores nail-biting mystery and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, Sarah writes in many genres including contemporary and ghostly paranormal romance.
