Author Interview & Giveaway - Portrait of Woman in Ink by Kelly I. Hitchcock

Portrait of Woman in Ink

Author: Kelly I. Hitchcock
Genre: Contemporary fiction, short story collection
Publisher: Bird Brain Publishing
Pages: 181
Language: English (US)
Format: eBook and Paperback

Twelve women, twelve tattoos, and a narrative thread that weaves them all together, Portrait of Woman in Ink: A Tattoo Storybook is a collection of stories that answers that lingering question in the back of your mind when you see an inked woman: what does your tattoo mean (or perhaps – what were you thinking)? From a parent’s suicide to the birth of an unlikely child, the stories behind why women tattoo themselves are literally worn on (and sometimes under) their sleeves, and retold on these pages.

Complete with artwork from the original tattoo artists and a foreword by Dr. Marta Vicente, one of academia’s foremost voices in Women’s Studies, this series of literary vignettes celebrates real, everyday women and their tattoos that, while they may seem insignificant at the time, are a symbol of the larger struggles and triumphs that make them who they are. These stories explore the idea of tattoos bringing together women from different worlds, and teaching them how these worlds might not be as far apart as they think.

About the author Kelly I. Hitchcock

Kelly I. Hitchcock is an up-and-coming writer in the Austin, Texas area. She is author of various poems about the randomness of life, several short stories, random creative nonfiction works, and the coming-of-age novel The Redheaded Stepchild. She is world-renowned among a readership of five people and growing.

Raised by a single father in the small town of Buffalo, Missouri, Kelly has fond memories of cash-strapped life in the Ozarks that strongly influence her writing and way of life.

When she's not writing API documentation for money or writing poetry and fiction for unmoney, Kelly enjoys catering to the whims of a high maintenance rescue dog, frequenting Austin's many concert venues with her husband, and breaking things (in no particular order). She is an avid volunteer and fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Interview

1. Who are your favorite authors of all time?

John Updike, Joyce Carol Oates, and Tom Robbins

2. If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?

I’m trying to focus on being in the present! Although, I admit I wouldn’t mind taking a Tardis back through time to break things off with my former high school sweetheart… but we’re all a sum of our experiences, even the crappy ones.

3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

Probably The Witches of Eastwick by John Updike. I love all Updike’s work, but this one stands out to me due to its daring subject matter and display of female strength and power.

4. If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?

Joan Rivers, John Barrowman, George Stephanopolous, Kristin Chenoweth, and Pope Francis.

5. Have any hidden talents you would like to share?

I’m pretty smashing at karaoke, and I sew about half of what I wear. Making frilly baby girl dresses and bonnets is my favorite.

6. Do the words come easily most of the time? How do you unblock your writer’s block?

Yes, once I start typing and really get in the moment, the words just start flowing and usually only stop when I get rudely interrupted. If I need to take care of writer’s block, I usually go for a run. Writer’s block isn’t usually the problem; it’s carving out time to just sit down and write.

7. Which character is your favourite and why?

In my own book, it’s Hallie Herbstreet, a former drug pusher who turns her life around for the good of her son. She was inspired by a cousin of mine who’s led a lifelong struggle with drug abuse.
In all books, it’s Corinne Mulvaney from Joyce Carol Oates’ We Were the Mulvaneys. I just love how fun, quirky, and yet very flawed she is.

8. When it comes to writing, what are your strong points? What are your weaknesses?

I like to think I have a talent for detail and building images, though sometimes I can go too far with it. Ironically enough, creating a unique character voice is a strength, but writing good dialogue is not. It’s so hard to make it sound natural and pace it correctly!

9. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

Literary fiction, short story collections, and contemporary fiction with strong female characters.

10. How long does it take you to write a book?

It’s hard to say. It took me years to complete my first book, but I wrote my last one in about six months. It’s amazing what you can get done when you commit to a timeframe and put in the work. It’s probably also why I’ve been writing my work in progress for about a year and only have 6 chapters done.

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

Hi, call me Rose. I am in first year of college, I have a great passion for dancing. I love football, painting and hanging out with my friends.

2. What types of books do you write?

I have about 20 story ideas ready, all are YA Romance, mostly contemporary and suspenseful. I love the books where hero finally woes his heroine and those having realistic points. I am currently also starting a Fantasy [Magical] story, let's see where it gets.

3. How many books have you written?

On Wattpad, only one is on-going 'Taken By Destiny' and a collection of short love stories 'Laugh With Me, Cry With Her.' And I am focusing on them, as I usually focus on one story at a time. However, in future, many more are to come, since I have plots and all ready.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

I just watched 'Hunger Games- Catching Fire', it was just awesome. But now, I am looking forward to a Hindi movie, 'Dhoom 3' and book by Ruthie Knox- 'Deeper'.

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy reading Mysteries, I am die-hard fan of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie and Nancy Drew. But, I also crave for romances where hero and heroine have to face all the difficulties of the world for coming together. Because when they do, that feeling is so satisfying. But give me any book, I would read it, as I simply love reading.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what three things would you want with you?

Um, 1. Chocolates, like loads of it.
2. My laptop, can't leave it alone.
3. And a two room small Beach House.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

Nope, the entire story finishes in Book one and I don't want to lengthen it unnecessarily.

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

Um, by birth I had that annoying trait of day dreaming. I was always making short stories of them, because if I don't write them down, the voices in my head give me headache. And Wattpad gave me platform to share my stories.

Author Spotlight - Juvi_Black

Night In Gail

Sometimes, to unravel a mystery, you have to look within yourself...

Detective Stones, from Homicide Squad at New York Police Department Detective Bureau, was assigned to a murder case that led her to a series of similar ones. Switching between her therapies and work was hard enough, unravelling herself was just a bitter add-on.

Will she ever get hold of the serial killer or she’ll just get hold of herself?

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

I am an eighteen-year-old amateur author and have been writing since 9 years. My habit of writing was a secret for 8 years, until I found Wattpad. After receiving feedback from several authors on this website, I finally got the chance to improve myself. So yes, I’m a struggling, and a learning author. Apart from writing, I love to dance in various forms. Be it Classical, Folk or Western. If my mood permits, I sketch and compose songs. I am as well blessed with speed and stamina; hence I play a lot of sports. I’m doing my first year engineering and hope to support my family, passion and dreams from what I earn.

2. What types of books do you write?

I write many genres, and every single story that I’ve written has thick mystery. I started my writing journey with “Mystery”, and am obsessed with leaving hints and clues for the readers until the revelation. My books usually have strong female characters, but those characters are flawed too. Also, these days, I am highly obsessed with horror, paranormal and dark romance.

3. How many books have you written?

I’ve written four complete novels. Each one of those novels was available on Wattpad, in my previous account, which is now deleted. I am currently working on three new novels which I am planning to finish this year and start up a new one in the month of November, as a NaNoWriMo project.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

There’s a book written by an amazing Indian author. Two States, by Chetan Bhagat and I’ve heard they’re shooting a movie on that plot. I am waiting to watch it this year.

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

My choice of books varies with genres. I might like some Teen Fiction, whereas, I might not like some other. When I started reading on wattpad, the first one was a Teen Fiction. I was kind of fed up with the repetitive plots and quit the genre. Now, I have a sudden liking for one teen fiction written by Neeru, First Kisses and Broken Promises. Otherwise, I enjoy reading a good horror, paranormal, romance, fantasy, science fiction, action, mystery and actually anything that is unique, not cliché. I avoid Fan Fictions as much as possible.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1. I’d have chosen my phone straightaway, but it’d be useless with limited battery power. So I’d keep gadgets aside. I’d only need my phone because of someone special and I’d want them with me.
2. Also a camping kit.
3. And lots of two minute noodles packets.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

Maybe… If the first book is a success, I might work on the second book. There are chances that Night in Gail would have an open end.

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

Enid Blyton and Carolin Keeyne, and their books, are the reasons why I started writing. I was thoroughly inspired by their books. Hence, my first attempt of writing was about a group of six spies named, Fantastic Six Spies. I was only nine back then and naïve. I am not too proud of my first work, but that was my first step towards the literary world. My friends encouraged me too. They used to read my handwritten books and ask me for a copy. Of course, I wasn’t ready to give them. But they always got the chance to read it. Therefore, I knew it was something I should continue with.

Excerpt

Taking an advantage of the open invite, Gail hopped inside the dim lit bedroom, the noise of her black heels making her arrival apparent. The raven-haired girl looked up, whimpering from fear, if not from cold. Making sure that her face was hidden from the poor girl, Gail walked a little closer. The girl, once sitting with her knees bent and face dug, straightened her legs on the bed. A sob escaped the girl’s lips and groan of fear from the back of her throat. Gail hated it when girls cried; she was there to help her. Girls were supposed to be strong and fight the evil: Gail wanted to be their role model and teach them, but world was too naïve to accept her style respectfully.

“Hush, don’t ye cry,” whispered Gail, pulling the sword out from its holster.

The girl’s eyes widened. “Don’t kill me, please.”

“I will not,” said Gail. “I just wanna know somethin’ from ye and help ye, I promise.”

The girl took a noisy gulp, letting fresh tears escape her eyes. “Okay,” she said, her voice cracked.

“Who did ‘is to ye, lassie?” asked Gail, despite of being aware about the culprit.

“I cannot tell anyone, he’ll—”

“I’ll help ye,” assured Gail, not letting the girl finish her sentence.

“No!” said the girl with a pitch in her tone. She was clearly threatened about it. “He’ll harm my mother: I cannot let that happen… I cannot…” The girl clutched her dark mane, yanking it and cried, making Gail sigh.

Guest Post & Giveaway - Night Slashers by Rashad Freeman

About the author Rashad Freeman

Rashad Freeman is a wildly eccentric, native Floridian with a passion for storytelling. As the son of an English Professor, you could say writing is in his blood. While he loves to dabble in just about every genre, the bulk of his work is in Thrillers and Science Fiction. Anything involving water and his family, which includes his wife and three boys, is enough to occupy a weekend.

When he is not working on the next great American novel, Rashad can be found crossfitting, swimming or daring to do all.  Rashad is also a passionate advocate for promoting childhood literacy and early childhood education. He has participated in numerous volunteer activities at local schools and is always eager to speak to students about the importance of reading.

Guest Post: The Making of Night Slashers

Trying to nail down the inspiration for Night Slashers is a bit difficult. Like all of my stories, the idea just came to me and from that it grew and morphed. To date it’s the only thriller I’ve published, which makes it special in that regard and many have told me it’s my best writing. (Although if you find yourself hating the book I assure you I’ve written something better.)

The bulk of my work is in the paranormal/science fiction space. I like to think of myself as an aliens, zombies and vampires type of writer, but I do love to read pretty much everything. I’m certainly guilty of genre hopping and will write whatever hops into my twisted mind.

Like so many of my stories, Night Slashers allowed me to explore a different aspect of myself and have a blast twisting the plot around while I did it.  As a writer I spend a lot of time focusing on characters and let the plot develop itself.  Generally, an idea will pop into my head and I’ll just start writing. At some point I’ll figure out where I’d like the story to end, but I really don’t outline or anything. My stories are heavily character driven and I put myself into their shoes and literally act out scenes as I write them.  During the writing of Night Slashers, which I did almost exclusively after midnight, I could be found in my office having deep conversations with myself on how best to commit a murder.

So, what inspired me to write Night Slashers?  The same thing that inspired me to write all of my books, I’m a writer. At my core, at the very center of my being, I’m a writer. I won’t claim to be an exceptionally good one or anything, but I do love the craft. I have no less than twenty ideas a day jump out as a story, so I have a hefty backlog of things I need to get written.

Night Slashers actually started off as a type of spy thriller. I’d written about 60% of the story, but it always felt like it was missing something. It was like I was forcing my main character to do things that really weren’t in his nature and I couldn’t explain his motivation. So with more than half of the novel completed, I scrapped the whole thing and started over. I’m very happy I did because in writing it the second time everything flowed naturally and the plot twists created themselves.

In the end I’m really happy about how the novel turned out. It was loads of fun creating a world where no one was safe and I’ve grown a bit of an obsession with offing characters. I definitely see myself writing this type of story again and while this was made as a stand-alone novel, I’ve already started thinking about a sequel.

About the Author:

I'm a wife, mother, author, reader, although not always in that order.  I write young adult urban fantasies, science/fiction and paranormal romances and have recently started dabbling in young adult contemporary romance. Reading was one of my earliest passions, writing soon followed. I began writing seriously during college where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting. Why I chose a career that frowns on creativity remains a mystery.

I’m addicted to Reese’s peanut butter cups and eat way too many while I write, have an abnormal obsession with hoodies and can’t write without one, and I hate to cook, but love to watch cooking shows on television. An unabashed romantic, I love a swoon-worthy ending that will give me butterflies for days.

I wrote my debut young adult novel, PODs, in 2011. PODs, a science/fiction, post-apocalyptic romance, will be released June 4, 2013 through the amazing Spencer Hill Press.  My second young adult title, Milayna, a paranormal romance, will release through Spencer Hill Press beginning in March 2014. Milayna is a standalone, with series potential. It’s meant to be a trilogy. The Infected, a PODs novel, will release November 2014. It is the second, and last, book in the PODs series.

I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan.  I now reside in a small community outside Houston, Texas with my incredibly supportive, not to mention gorgeous, husband, three amazing school-aged children, a 125-pound lap dog, and a snooty cat.
