Author Spotlight - ShaylaRah

Vampiru

Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, 2012.

Dani Tamari's life is ordinary enough. But when she makes a simple decision - to skip school so she can go bird watching - things begin to change. New people, secrets, accidents, and mysteries come pouring into her life.

The so-called David Cross doesn't regret killing his abusive father. Instead, he's happy he rid the world of such a man. But the authorities on his home planet don't see it that way, and now he's on the run. He chooses Earth to hide, and lands in Enniskillen. He doesn't realise there are unpleasant surprises waiting for him there.

Dani and David find their lives a mess as their worlds collide, with disastrous consequences for some people. Dani doesn't know what she's getting into, and she wouldn't want anything to do with it if she did. But she's in too deep, she knows too much, and there's no way out. Will she survive?

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

I'm fourteen going on fifteen, I've been to two schools but now I'm homeschooled, and I love writing, reading and drawing.

2. What types of books do you write?

Science fiction, vampire, historical, horror, and mystery.

3. How many books have you written?

I haven't finished a book, yet, but at the moment I'm writing Vampiru and hope to finish it sometime this year, I've put Space Family Robinson on hiatus until I finish Vampiru (and I may never get back to writing it), and I have three stories planned, one of which I've started writing but haven't published on Wattpad yet.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

I don't even know what books/movies are coming out this year...

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

Science fiction, vampire (but not the Twilight sort of vampire, the Dracula sort of vampire), horror, mystery, crime, fantasy, anything that isn't romance or badly-written, really.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1. My computer
2. My sketchbook
3. My notebook.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

Yes, I intend to make Vampiru the first of a series and I've got a sequel planned.

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

A writing exercise at my first school, where we had to imagine backstories for characters in a book we were reading. That got me interested in creating characters and eventually stories.

Excerpt

The man sat up, suddenly wide awake. But what had woken him?

He rubbed his eyes and looked around, and then he knew. His son was leaning against the door, holding something behind his back, a look of hate on his face.

"Wha' y' doin' 'ere?"

"Getting rid of you."

His son lunged at him with a knife before that fully registered with his hung-over brain.

"Oi! Jis' a momen'!" he slurred, dodging more through luck than anything else. "Wha' all this 'bout?"

The only answer he received was the knife through his heart.

~~~~
He hadn't done anything wrong. He had done the planet a favour, in fact. But the Intergalactic Police Service didn't see it that way. So now he was on the run, hiding on first one planet, then another, trying to get to a planet that was not under their jurisdiction.
As he ran his eyes down the list the computer had generated, one name, for some reason, caught his attention.
Earth
Native Species: Human
Similar To Vampiruans: In appearance
Language: Several hundred, depending on region
On InGEN's List: Yes
Acknowledgement Of Existence Of Other Life-Forms: No (majority)
Planet Can Sustain Vampiruan Life: Yes, in some regions
Obviously, humans (why were they not called Earthians?) were not advanced enough to realize how much easier it was for everyone to learn one language, but were advanced enough to have those meddling nuisances on their planet. And, if they refused to believe in other life-forms, it was likely there were a good deal of those other life-forms hiding on Earth and passing themselves off as human.
After a moment's thought, he set the controls on his starship for the planet known as Earth.
There was no one around when he crashed. That was a good thing, of course, but it meant that InGEN had tracked him and warned everyone to get out of there. Unless Earth settlements were always so deserted.
The first thing he noticed about the new planet was how warm it was. Well, there was snow on the ground, but it was much warmer than Vampiru. There was a strange, metallic smell in the air (possibly the fuel humans used for their vehicles) and a strange bird was singing somewhere overhead. There was a forest to one side, and not far away, running water could be heard. That was a most unwelcome sound. He didn't know if water on Earth was poisonous, but fear of the deadly water on their own planet was too deeply ingrained in every Vampiruan for them to see it as anything but an enemy.
As he looked around, he saw something that until now had escaped his notice - a human. It was asleep, or at least it seemed to be. And it was lying on the snow!
Very strange creatures, he thought with a frown.
Vampiruans might like cold, but very few would choose to sleep in the snow unless they wanted to catch a nasty chill.
He took a step toward it, then another, watching it warily all the time in case this was a ruse. It never moved.
It looked like a female, but then he knew nothing of humans and it could be almost anything. It/she was still alive - he could hear its heart beating and its blood rushing through its veins. For a moment he entertained the thought of drinking her blood, but dismissed the idea almost immediately. A dead body was just the thing to set people of any species on edge.
He thought quickly. InGEN would soon be here, and they'd take his starship and him too if they found him. However, they couldn't take him if he wasn't here. And if he scanned this girl's mind, he could learn the language spoken here and the social customs and he'd be able to fit in.
Now that he'd decided what he would do, he picked the girl up and headed towards the forest. There was no way he could move the starship - it needed repairs. He could only hope that the forcefield preventing anyone else from entering was still in place.
~~~~

Dani woke with a start. Oh, no. Professor Avalon warned me what would happen if I fell asleep in class again, and I have. Wonder --

Her thoughts broke off mid-sentence as she took in her surroundings. She wasn't in school. She wasn't at home. She was lying under a tree in the forest.

She stared. Since when did someone fall asleep under a tree in the middle of winter? And why did her ankle hurt when she stood up?

How very odd.

How very stupid, you mean, her inner critic snickered.

Dani scowled, wishing there was some way she could shut him up.

I must have tripped and hurt my ankle, and then sat down here to rest, or something. Yes, that's it. And then I fell asleep and dreamed all that stuff about the street being empty.

After consulting her watch and realizing it was almost teatime, and long after school ended, she decided it was high time to return home. If her parents were arguing she could always make herself a sandwich and go over to Steven and Gareth's (her friends from school) house.

She limped (she tried to skip, but her ankle protested and put an end to that idea) through the forest until she reached the path along the river, down the path, out the gates, down the street and towards home, oblivious to the fact that the street was still empty.

Horror / Mystery / Thriller

Book Blurb from Wattpad:

13th of June, 2013-7:13pm-54th day of the Apocalypse

“I thought the military would come by now or some transmission telling us we’re safe. Am I really that stupid? The dead have risen and have eaten half of the population. There is no military, no police, no anything, just dead. But the dead aren’t as bad as the living. With the dead you know what will happen, they will bite, chew and swallow your flesh until there is nothing left but your bones, but the living? They are unpredictable. Hell, I could be sitting with a bunch of traitors that would push me to a crowd of wanderers and watch me getting eaten alive.

Sigh. Why am I even doing this? Why I am writing my thoughts down on a cheap notepad? Is it because deep down I think this will just be history? No, it’s something I will live everyday. I’ve been giving myself false hope...but I won’t stop! The dead have done one thing right. They have convinced me to live.”

As a handful of very different teenagers are forced to work together to survive, they have to make the hardest choices they have ever made in their entire life. You never know who will put a barrel of a gun right between your eyes and blow your brains out.

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

I go by the username Miss_Mockingjay, but my name is Paige. I am a high school student in Australia. I love reading, music, playing guitar and piano, singing and playing netball.

I was introduced to Wattpad by my amazing cousin! She suggested it to me as we both have similar tastes in books (and most things). Through Wattpad I have been introduced to many genres, and will now read almost anything. It gave me a new appreciation for books, and opened up the opportunity to be a part of a great community.

2. What types of books do you write?

I love to write fantasy novels, based at a teen audience. All of my books have female main characters, as I am a girl myself. I try desperately to prevent my stories from becoming obviously cliché, as when they do I tend to lose the motivation to write.

3. How many books have you written?

I currently have three books on Wattpad. One of which is a werewolf story, the next a collection of fan inspired one-shots, and my final, ‘The Shadow Sisters’, a fantasy action adventure.

The Shadow Sisters is my current novel, and what I believe to be my best. It is a fast paced and exciting book which will take you on a twisting journey full of mystery, plot twists and a whole lot of fun!

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Oh, the list is endless! I think I am most looking forward to House of Hades by Rick Riordan for the book… But there are so many amazing movies coming up that I just can’t chose. I think my top 3 would be Catching Fire, City of Bones and Sea of Monsters.

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I love an array of types of books, and I guess it just depends on my mood. Sometimes I want a fast paced action book, other times a cute and romantic novel that I can curl up with in bed, sometimes a book full of twists and mystery to keep my mind active and at others a cliché story. I mainly like fantasy, but will read any book so long as it is fiction.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1) My kitten Coco.
2) My laptop… with internet of course.
3) And finally an iPod with all of my favourite songs.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

I think that I would like to make a sequel, but it just depends on where the book takes me. I have a plan for how it is going to pan out, and how it will end… but it is all of the stuff in the middle that will decide. If I manage to put the entire story in to one book then maybe not, but of this happens then I might make the next book form a new characters perspective?

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

When I first joined Wattpad I spent a few months looking around and reading all of the different kinds of books. Once I had got used to the format I started to get more confident and would comment more on stories. It was nice to be able to give advice and to know that I was helping others.

I would love to have my voice heard, and entertain others as much as they have entertained me. I imagine you sitting in your rooms anxiously checking for updates, as I have dome on many an occasion, and would love it if it was my book you were so dedicated to. It would be amazing to be able to achieve such a thing!

Excerpt

“Sir,” a discreet voice sounded to my left, “the east front scouts have spotted an intruder.”

“What.” I snapped. There can’t be an intruder, they could ruin everything. This transaction had taken months to plan and organise.

“Yes, a girl. She only looks about 12 or 13 though. In the alcove at about 9:30” He added.

“Hmmm, let her be for now. But get five more men in preparation around her. Not to close, she can’t know that she has been spotted.”

This girl had piqued my interest, not many could get past my defence, and no one should be able to get past the defence of both Tristian and I. Though he can be impulsive and has little patience, Tristian is a great strategist and would not leave any gaps in his guards.  I would get my men to observe what she does, and take her after the transaction was complete. She could be a great addition to my company.

The transaction parties were about 5 meters (approximately 15 feet) away from each other when everyone froze. My attention snapped to the girl. She was of average height and had a lean, but also muscular physique. Her hair was dark brown and reached just below her shoulders, curling slightly at the bottom. Her eyes were a slightly darker shade of brown than her hair, and were the focus of her round face.

“Who the fuck are you!” Tristian growled.

“Mistress Huntress at your service.” She responded cheekily, her voice filled with laughter as she extravagantly bowed.

“Sassy ‘ay.” I called to her.

A wink and tilted nod of the head was all the response I got before she continued.

“But that is not important right now.” The girl spoke, her voice now serious. The change in her tone surprised me, though I did not show it, as did the immediate and undivided enrapture it commanded.

“What is important is the fact that in about 3 minutes this place will be swarmed with agents from the NA police force expecting one of the most important transactions of the underground to be taking place.”

“How do you know that?” Tristian snapped. “And why should we believe you? You’re just a little girl in the middle of…”

“A hormonal playground?” she mocked, interrupting him half way through his rant. “Well first of where will doubting me get you, in a cell 5 million dollars poorer and with about 20 less men, or how about the fact that I am risking my life at the moment to warn you, or I don’t know the fact that their communications defences are so easy to break into may as well have been written by a baby.” She continued, taking a step closer with each point she made, before tossing a NAPF (North America Police Force) communicator into the middle of the court yard.

“ETA two and a half minutes, we have the courtyard surrounded.” The broken voice announced for all to hear.

Chaos erupted. People were weaving past each other to their vehicles, all order forgotten. All with the same thought on their mind. We cannot be caught.

“Where do you think you’re going?” I called to the girl as I saw her sprint across the courtyard.

“You’re not the only one who has people to run from darling.” She responded.

“See you around.” She was the last thing I heard before she turned the corner, and was out of sight.
