When Iris is twelve years old, her mother is murdered. Six years later, the crime remains unsolved, and it's the sudden death of her estranged grandmother - as well as Iris's subsequent introduction to the prickly, yet entrancingly enigmatic Heathcliffe Monroe - that unlocks an even more complicated mystery. Between the lingering shadows of long-lost family secrets, and an overwhelming freefall into an entirely unexpected new world - the only guarantee that Iris has left is that there isn't one.

MY REVIEW

It's been six years since the tragic murder of Iris's mother, and now she discovers her estranged grandmother, Kate, has passed away. With the mystery behind her peculiar grandmother comes a revelation about Iris's family's magical heritage that sets her on a path of self-discovery.

It was the premise that convinced me to read this book, and while it did start off with much intrigue, it quickly lost its way in terms of plot development and characterisation. I found it to be overly descriptive at times, which often made my focus drift away fom the story. Iris was a decent character - memorable, at least - and there were some good elements to the story, but it felt underdeveloped.

I tried to read it to the end, but it just didn't work out for me. It was an okay read.
