Author:
Bryony Pearce
Genre: YA Sci-fi
Release Date: February 4th, 2016
Xist Publishing

Book Description:
A sabotaged colonization attempt leaves the last humans in the universe stranded on Mars. Braving a half-terraformed atmosphere, terrifying indigenous species, and a colony government that is openly hostile, a young girl named Wren must defy tradition to save her mother and perhaps, every human left.

It is forbidden for women to steal the wings that allow a select group of runners to carry messages and goods between colonies. It is forbidden to cross the wastes with a sand storm on the horizon and it is certainly forbidden to share the secrets of the windrunners with those who spend their entire lives in the biospheres.

But what choice does she have?

GUEST POST
My favourite science fiction novels

I’m a huge science fiction fan, my favourite films (apart from Princess Bride of course) are science fiction or fantasy: Serenity, Aliens, Pitch Black, Guardians of the Galaxy. I like strong female characters, sharp dialogue and stuff with tentacles being blown up. Call me shallow.

I was raised ‘borrowing’ the science fiction novels from my dad’s personal bookcase, shutting myself up in my room and reading about other worlds and fantastic adventures. And stuff with tentacles being blown up.
So, do I have favourite science fiction novels, the ones that inspired and excited me? Of course I do.

My first favourite was The Ship who Sang, by Anne Macaffrey. Set in a future where severely disabled people with no chance at a normal life, but whose brains are still functioning fine, are used as the ‘brains’ in machinery such as space ships, or space stations. Helva, the ship’s brain falls in love with her ‘brawn’, or human companion.

I also loved the PERN series by Anne Macaffrey, in particular the Dragonsong trilogy about a young girl who can sing, but whose parents were so strict and unbending she had to escape to live the life she wanted. All set on a different planet, with its own (serious, environmental) problems.

I loved Asimov’s Foundation series and found Ender’s Game particularly memorable, perhaps, as a young person, those stories starring young people, affected me most.

When I was older I read and loved Hyperion, by Dan Simmons, based on the Canterbury Tales. It is so well written and reminds us that science fiction can be more than stuff with tentacles being blown up (although that happens too).

And my final pick, has to be the immortal Terry Pratchett, whose Discworld series marries humour, satire and science fiction: the best of blends.

I love science fiction and now I write it, I think it’s pretty clear who my most important influences are. I hope you enjoy reading my book and perhaps can spot some of my favourites in there too.
