The Intergalactic Adventures of Queen Bea
Author: Jeanne Gransee Barker

Book Description:
Everything she’d ever known was a lie. Now Bea must find the courage to trust her own voice to save not only herself — but an entire planet.

At almost 15, late-bloomer Bea Parker has just discovered that her aunt, uncle and cousins—the only family she’s ever known—aren’t actually related to her and don’t know anything about her birth parents. Then a strange, high-tech device shows up in her room in the middle of the night with a note promising answers about her shadowed past. This alien technology takes her on a journey that forces her to leave behind Earth, and everything she knows, to meet her destiny.

Excerpt

Excerpt from Chapter 20: Seeing Spots

“Where are we? What happened? Where’s my backpack?” Bea looked around, trying to focus. Her mind was spinning and her arms and legs felt limp. The pain in her head, however, had subsided to a mild throb, and she was hungry—really hungry—for the first time in weeks. She looked around. Calvin was next to her and there were tubes, like IVs, attached to her arms. What were they doing to her? She began tugging and the tubes easily released, one by one, without pain, revealing no puncture marks.

“Bea, don’t. You’re sick—” Calvin leaned to try to stop her.

“No, it’s okay,” Vaslow said, placing one hand lightly on Calvin’s shoulder. Calvin leaned back as Vaslow reached over and gently released the remaining tubes. “You’re stable. The worst has passed.” He examined her eyes, not with an emotional concern but with a medical cautiousness.

Bea shrugged his hand off and scooted back on the bed, out from under the old man’s touch. She looked at Calvin. “Why did you let him do this to me?” She drew her knees up to her chest and winced as the waistband of her skirt cut into her. “What did you do to my clothes? This is not okay! I want to go home right now! Calvin, how could you just let him do this?” She remembered feeling sick and going into the bathroom at school…and then nothing. She must have passed out, and Calvin just let this crazy old man kidnap her, probably because he wanted another look at the shiny gadgets. The anger swirled in her brain and made it hard to think.

“Calvin did nothing but save your life,” Vaslow said to Bea. “You’ve a lot to process—”

“Process? Process what? Being kidnapped? Drugged?” Bea rubbed her aching arms. “You need to take me home. Now.”

“I’m afraid that’s not possible—” Vaslow began, but Bea didn’t let him finish.

“Take me home. Take me home. Take me home!” Bea squeezed herself into a tight ball and closed her eyes, pressing the hot tears onto her cheeks. Her muscles felt weird and loose. As she moved her arm it felt like she was moving an object not connected to her. What had Calvin let this man do?

“Bea.” Calvin slid in close to her. “I think it’s too late for that.”

“What do you mean too late? I just need—” Calvin put his hand on her chin and turned her face toward the shiny instrument panel next to her. She looked at her reflection and all breath escaped her. “What have you done to me?” She meant to scream the question at Vaslow, but it came out as a raspy whisper. She rubbed at the dark splotches that were now present along her face and neck, trying in vain to wipe them off, but the friction just caused the surrounding skin to redden and sting. It was no use—the marks weren’t going anywhere.

About the Author
I discovered science fiction when I was four. My father loved Star Trek, the original series. Every Friday night he’d make a big deal of getting the house quiet so he could hear the TV. The importance of it drew me in. And then I was hooked on other worlds, molecules being scrambled and reformed, and meeting totally logical aliens. As I grew older and continued to watch, I loved the idea that a story could explore our contemporary dilemmas couched in two-tone faces or hidden with green skin. Science fiction was the “gateway genre” that led me to fantasy and paranormal fiction.

I began my first novel at age 12. I still have the ring binder with the hand-written pages of OOTG-1 (that stands for Out of the Galaxy)—the story of the first manned expedition to venture forth beyond our galaxy. Alas, after about thirty pages my hand got tired and the crew never left the Milky Way. But that experience sparked a lifelong love of writing which  has continued through my school days to the present.

When I'm not enjoying the alternate universes of my written creations, I live, work, and play  Seattle, Washington.
