Blog Tour Interview - The Mark of the Tala by Jeffe Kennedy

The Mark of the Tala
The Twelve Kingdoms Trilogy
Book One
Jeffe Kennedy

Release Date: May 27, 2014

Book Description:
Queen Of The Unknown

The tales tell of three sisters, daughters of the high king. The eldest, a valiant warrior-woman, heir to the kingdom. The youngest, the sweet beauty with her Prince Charming. No one says much about the middle princess, Andromeda. Andi, the other one.

Andi doesn't mind being invisible. She enjoys the company of her horse more than court, and she has a way of blending into the shadows. Until the day she meets a strange man riding, who keeps company with wolves and ravens, who rules a land of shapeshifters and demons. A country she'd thought was no more than legend--until he claims her as its queen.

In a moment everything changes: Her father, the wise king, becomes a warlord, suspicious and strategic. Whispers call her dead mother a traitor and a witch. Andi doesn't know if her own instincts can be trusted, as visions appear to her and her body begins to rebel.

For Andi, the time to learn her true nature has come. . .

Upcoming books in the trilogy are The Tears of the Rose and The Talon of the Hawk.

Character Interview with Andromeda

1. Tell us a little about yourself - your name, where you grew up?

My name is Andromeda, which is a mouthful and awfully dramatic, so everyone calls me Andi.

2. Who was your high school crush?

I didn’t go to high school. My sisters and I had tutors – though I usually skipped out as much as I could get away with, to go riding.

3. What is the most romantic gesture you have ever done for someone?

I don’t know if it counts as romance, but I did agree to marry Rayfe, a man I barely knew. He’s better at the romantic gestures, in truth.

4. What's your ideal Valentine's Day date and/or gift?

Riding on the beach with Rayfe.

5. If you could have just one wish to change something about yourself, what would it be?

I wish I was stronger and smarter.

6. What is the simple most important thing needed for a relationship to last?

Regard for each other’s strengths and happiness.

7. What's the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?

Well, watching my blood change into birds and fly away was the first strangest thing that happened to me.

8. Who should play you in a film?

Mila Kunis probably comes close.

9. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always knew I’d have to serve the Twelve Kingdoms as a Princess of the Realm, but my sister Ursula is the Heir. I guess I figured I’d be her advisor or something. Of course, that was before I knew about Rayfe and the contract with the Tala.

10. Say the first thing that comes to mind when I say these five words, and be honest:

1. Snow? Lovely – though I have unpleasant associations with it now
2. Peppermint? A rare treat
3. Couple? Rayfe and me
4. Pop? A sharp sound
5. Tokyo? Um, I have no idea! What is it?

Excerpt From Darknight - Chapter 1

“So you talk to dead people?” he asked.
“Yes, I communicate with earthbound spirits, if that’s what you mean by ghosts,” I said primly.
Once again, he didn’t rise to the bait. “That’s interesting. And no, to answer your previous question, I’ve never seen her. No cold spots, no personal items moved around, no nothing. Not that my talent is conversing with the spirit world.”
“And what is your talent, Connor?”
A cloud seemed to pass over his face, but then he replied, his tone casual, “Nothing so spectacular, I assure you.”
“Well, it has to be pretty good, to be able to hide the fact that you’re a warlock.” That was something which had been troubling me ever since I realized he’d managed to hide his true identity so well. Normally, I should have sensed that he was a member of a witch clan from the very moment I met him, even if I couldn’t have known he was a Wilcox. But I’d felt nothing. He’d seemed like a civilian to me…up until the moment he bent down to give me the consort’s kiss.
Voice even, he replied, “That wasn’t me. That was Damon’s spell.”
“Damon’s quite the multi-tasker, isn’t he? Any other little tricks I should know about?”
He gave a humorless laugh. “A few. But I don’t think we need to talk about that now.”
“Fine,” I said. I could tell from his expression, the tight look to his mouth, that he wouldn’t appreciate any prodding on that subject from me. “But we do need to talk, don’t you think? I mean, last night you said we would ‘hash this over in the morning.’ Well, it’s almost noon, and you haven’t said much of anything except to tell me where the bagels are.”
Surprisingly, he said, “You’re right. Take these” —and he handed the white paper bag holding the sandwiches to me— “and I’ll get some plates and water and stuff.”
The first floor of the apartment was pretty much open-plan in style, except a few closed doors that might be a guest bath and a coat closet. The dining area sat just on the other side of the bar of granite that acted as a sort of separator from the kitchen, so I went there and settled myself in one of the heavy wooden chairs. Like the table, they were simple, almost rustic in appearance, but that didn’t fool me. I’d spent too much time shopping for furniture recently not to know that they, like almost everything else in the apartment, had not been cheap.
Connor came out of the kitchen carrying a couple of glasses and a bottle of Evian water, along with some brown earthenware plates. He set everything down at the table, then seated himself across from me. Probably just as well that he didn’t sit directly beside me; one brush of his knee against mine under the table, and I would’ve been in serious trouble.
After he sat he busied himself with pulling the paper napkins and the sandwiches out of the bag, not really looking at me as he set a sandwich wrapped in white paper down on my plate. “I didn’t know what you’d eat, so I got you smoked turkey with provolone. Hope that’s okay.”
“It’s fine,” I said. The bagel notwithstanding, I was ravenous. Probably my body trying to make up for all the energy it had lost last night through stress and sleep deprivation.
He poured some water into my glass, then did the same with his. After that there wasn’t much left for him to do except eat. He began to unwrap his sandwich.
“Eat first, then talk?” I asked. It was pretty obvious that he really didn’t want to have this conversation.
Something that was almost but not quite a sigh escaped his lips before he set the sandwich back down on his plate. “I just want you to know that none of this was my idea.”
“I had a feeling,” I said wryly, “considering you can barely even make yourself look at me.”
This time he did glance up, and I had to hold myself steady as the eyes I had dreamed of so often met mine, and held. The muscles in his jaw visibly tightened. “I want to look at you,” he said. “It’s just…dangerous.”

About the Author
A native of Southern California, Christine Pope has been writing stories ever since she commandeered her family’s Smith-Corona typewriter back in the sixth grade. Her short fiction has appeared in Astonishing Adventures, Luna Station Quarterly, and the journal of dark fiction, Dark Valentine. Two of her short stories have been nominated for the Pushcart Prize.

Christine writes as the mood takes her, and her work includes paranormal romance, and fantasy and science fiction/space opera romance. She blames this on being easily distracted by bright, shiny objects, which could also account for the size of her shoe collection. After spending many years in the magazine publishing industry, she now works as a freelance editor and graphic designer in addition to writing fiction. She fell in love with Sedona, Arizona, while researching the Sedona Trilogy and now makes her home there, surrounded by the red rocks. No alien sightings, though...not yet, anyway!

Publisher: Darkfeed Press (GMTA Publishing)
Page count: 284

Book Description:
A popular teen is bitten by a vampire during a steamy night of making out with her boyfriend. After the bite, she wakes up in a cruel orphanage in Vampire World, with no memory of her past. She’s left with very little; only fangs, pale skin and a keen desire for blood.

Marissa, who’s named Janice in Vampire World, escapes the ghastly orphanage thanks to Mr. John FreeCut, an old, benevolent vampire who adopts Janice because he wants to foster children he could never have. He says her parents died in a crash. Beautiful, innocent and thrust into an enigmatic world she has no memory of, Janice must face many challenges. The grueling blood hostess job. The multiple stalkers and creepers who are hungry for her and her blood. The dizzying fireball competition. And most challenging, the fact that she doesn’t look or act like a vampire.

Janice is emotionally overwhelmed. Thankfully she makes some friends, including Brett BloodCut. Brett and Janice are immersed in a passionate romance, and Brett helps Janice adjust to her new world by giving her the love, confidence and knowledge she needs to survive as a vampire. Author character interview with Janice FreeCut

1. What is your name?

My name is Janice FreeCut.

2. Where do you live?

I live in Vampire World. I can’t remember anything about my past because I was involved in an accident. All I know is that my parents were killed and I survived. I lost my memory.

3. How are you holding up?

I’m doing ok. It just feels weird being a vampire. I almost feel like I lived somewhere else many years ago, though I can’t put my finger on it. I don’t know what to say. I do love drinking blood though!

4. Have you met some friends or family in Vampire World?

Yes. I was adopted by Mr. John FreeCut, an older vampire who serves me the best bloodburgers in the world! He is kind and friendly, though kind of mysterious. I have made some really cool vampire friends my age as well, including a very “special one” named Brett Bloodcut!

5. Tell me about Brett. Are you all dating?

Brett is “amazing!” We are in a long term relationship, and he is freakin awesome. Before I met him, I went on some lousy dates with some jerks vampires who cared more about their own blood then me. Now it feels great to find someone who actually cares about me.

6. Are you working?

Yes! I have the greatest job in the world at a place called Vampire Supermarket! It has some amazing vampire clothes with 3-D special effects!

7. What goals do you want to accomplish in the future?

I want to win the Fireball Tournament, get a live moving, 3-D tattoo, and fit in more in Vampire World. And I want to find out why this mysterious masked stranger keeps coming to my bedroom window and telling me he knows a secret about my life that I need to know!

8. That stranger sounds creepy! What do you think he wants to tell you?

I have no clue! He’s getting annoying though. And Mr. FreeCut never sees him!

Thank you, Janice, for the interview.

Excerpt from My Best Friend, Maybe

Dad pulls up to the curb outside the international terminal.
When he looks at me, his eyes aren’t so wild anymore. They almost look sad. “You ready?”
“what’s going on, Dad?” I ask. It hits me that he somehow snuck me out of the house and now he’s ready to push me onto an airplane to some distant island, but he still hasn’t said anything real.
He shrugs. “Mom’s not always right,” he says.
            But she is.
His eyes fall to his lap. “Neither am I,” he says. “Call your mother. Say good-bye.”
My hands shake as I finally turn on my phone.
She answers before the first ring. “Don’t get on that airplane, Colette,” she says, “Know that I don’t approve of this.”
            “You know?” I ask.
“Your father left a note. Colette...” She trials off. “You heard me tell you not to go, right?”
            “Yes,” I say.
“Well if you go anyway, be safe. Protect your body and your soul. I changed your phone plan so you can only call home, okay? It’s too expensive for you to call Louisa and Mark willy-nilly.” Mark. “But call when you arrive, okay? So we don’t have to worry.”
            “Okay,” I say.
My hands aren’t shaking anymore. I’m relieved to hear her sound like any-old-mom.
“And, honey?” she says. She says it so softly I think she’s going to tell me to have a nice time. Or that she loves me.
            “Yeah?”
“I hope you understand what a terrible choice you’re making.”
            She hangs up.
I stare at the phone in my palm.
            “She okay?” Dad says finally.
            I shrug.
We get out of the car and I spot Sadie and her family climbing out of a limo curbed fifty feet away. She jumps up and down as soon as she sees me, her now purple-and-blond hair waving across her face. I can’t help smiling. I can see her mouth moving even from here. “You came! You came!”
I give my dad a quick hug, pull out my suitcase, yank up the handle of my rolly bag, and take my first step as the new, imperfect Coley.
            “Colette?” Dad says.
I turn around, ready for him to sit me back in the car, to tell me this was all a test that I failed. Instead he holds out his hand and shoves a stack of bills into my fist. “For whatever you need, little lady. Have fun. I—we. We love you.”
            Then he’s gone.
“Coley!” Sadie is running toward me so quickly that I only have a second to open my phone and click on my good-morning text from Mark.
“One more day! I love you!” the message says.
My heart beats faster and salt water threatens to escape from behind my eyeballs and I know he deserves so much better than this, so much more explanation, so much more of me. And me, too. I know I deserve a better good-bye than I’m going to be able to give him. But I only have ten seconds before she reaches me, before it’s time, before the bell rings on my perfect life and I dive into the drama with Sadie.
I type the seven letters i-m s-o-r-r-y. Then I press Send.
            Here we go.

Meet Ian Mason

Super sweet and a little shy at times, Ian is a genuine good guy. I’ve wrote cocky arrogant types in the past, and while I love to add a dose of both in my male characters from time to time, writing a straight up good guy was refreshing.
Don’t get me wrong though, Ian is no dud in the personality department…
“Confident enough, are you kidding me? I just got a tattoo.” He shifted his eyes from the road to glance at me for a split-second. “Sweetheart, I went from confident, to dead sexy, to fucking badass in a single afternoon.”
Ian’s story is one of responsibility. It’s all about learning that sometimes in life you have to step up your game for those you love, while at the same time it reminds us that stepping out of our comfort zone occasionally is healthy.
