PRAISE FOR DARK LIGHT OF DAY:

“A spectacular debut novel.”—USA Today bestselling author Faith Hunter

“There is a fresh new voice in urban fantasy, and she has a unique take on Armageddon…With her unusual heroine, Noon Onyx, Archer has created a brilliant character who struggles against fate to find her place in the world. Set against the backdrop of university life, there is an abundance of adventure, mystery and passion!”—RT Book Reviews

“[D]elightfully dark and unique.” Bitten By Books

“Archer is now down on my ‘never miss’ author list.”–Night Owl Reviews

“[A] fascinating story line… Jill Archer has created a dark world that will grab your attention from the very start.”—The Reading Cafe

Excerpt from Dark Light of Day

“I’ve been watching you, wondering, waiting to see where you’d end up. After all, there are other demon law schools,” Seknecus said, making a moue of distaste that made it clear exactly what he thought of them. “But I was happy to see that you chose St. Lucifer’s.”

Technically my mother chose St. Lucifer’s . . . But there seemed no reason to interrupt to clarify that bit of misinformation. Seknecus wandered around the room, picking through papers, flipping open and quickly shutting the front covers of various leather-bound books, never meeting my eye. I had no doubt, however, that his attention was fully focused on me.

“So, you see, seeing your name on my list wasn’t exactly a surprise, although it appeared much later than I would have liked.”

He did look at me then, with a frown of disapproval. I did my best to look expressionless because none seemed appropriate. It wouldn’t do to look amused, bored or, Luck forbid, rebellious. Seknecus stared at me with narrowed eyes and then went back to wandering.

“You’ve got some catching up to do,” he said, addressing a copy of Sin and Sanction: Codification & Case Law. “It doesn’t matter why or what excuses you’ve got for yourself. You will be held to the same standards as everyone else, regardless of whose daughter you are. And you’ve missed a lot of class already.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but he cut me off with a wave.

“Manipulation class,” he clarified. “You’re going to have to work ten times as hard as everyone else just to pass. Quintus Rochester doesn’t go easy on students and he’s likely to see your absence during the early part of the semester as a challenge. You know, failing is not an option. Not if you want to live . . .”

Fiery Edge of Steel
Noon Onyx
Book 2
Jill Archer

Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: Ace
Date of Publication: May 28, 2013
Cover Artist: Jason Chan

Book Description:
Noon Onyx is the first woman in memory to wield waning magic. Her unique abilities, paired with a lack of control and reluctance to kill, have branded her as an outsider from her peers. Only her powerful lover, Ari Carmine, and a roguish and mysterious Angel, Rafe Sinclair, support her unconventional ways.

When Noon is shipped off to a remote outpost to investigate several unusual disappearances, it seems Luck is not on her side. But when the outpost settlers claim that an ancient and evil foe has stepped out of legend to commit the crimes, Noon realizes that she could be facing something much worse than she ever imagined…

PRAISE FOR FIERY EDGE OF STEEL:

“Archer delves deeper into the enticing and magical world of Dark Light of Day in this original and clever urban fantasy… Excitement and action leap from the pages as Archer’s skill with description pulls readers fully into her magical world.” Publishers Weekly

“The second Noon Onyx story is an astounding adventure tale. Archer’s unique world, where Lucifer’s army triumphed at Armageddon, is filled with adherence to strict laws that keep an uneasy peace between races. This is proving to be a really fresh and fascinating series!” RT Book Reviews

“[D]arkly disturbing in the very best of ways, with complex characters, extremely detailed scenes, and a believability that sucks you in like world-bending magic.” Bitten By Books

“[A] moving and fun story about choices and consequences and love… If you like your fantasy with a twist, blended with some evil, [and] an incredible mystery… grab this series and get ready for book three.” Cabin Goddess

“[Noon] is extremely brave and outspoken. She is passionate and strong and she doesn’t falter in her core beliefs… Archer has a great ability to keep the story moving along through character’s dialogue and through her imaginative and unique world… Fiery Edge of Steel is a great follow up second book in this series.” Rabid Reads

“[T]he themes are ethereal… leaving lots of space for subjective interpretation…  The story moves with lots of action and little extraneous dialogue or other word waste… If you like a mix of medieval, modern and fantasy with a kick-ass heroine, this is the series for you!” Fangs, Wands, and Fairy Dust

Excerpt from Fiery Edge of Steel

“You are familiar with Empyr wine, Ms. Onyx?” Rochester asked.

I nodded warily.

Angels were obsessed with apples. They took their love of this fruit very seriously, worshipping it as a symbol of the lost world they once ruled. A common motif in Angel art was the fallen apple that never rotted. Empyr wines were apple wines that were “enhanced” by some of the best Angel sommeliers in Halja. The enhancements were spells. Each batch had its own name, flavor, coloring, and associated spell. They were served upstairs in the Angels’ infamous restaurant on this building’s thirty-third floor.

I’d had Empyr wine exactly two times in my life. Each time it had produced life-altering effects, although in an indirect manner and not of the kind I could have guessed.

Friedrich turned back toward me and offered me the cup. Inside, the liquid was pink and fizzy and flecked with gold. I reached for the cup and there was a brief moment when I wasn’t sure Friedrich would let go. Was the spell tied to his touch? I yanked harder and the wine nearly spilled out of the cup as it broke free from his grasp. Rochester’s signature nudged mine, like a parent pinching an errant child. I glanced back at Ari, who gave me a tight smile.

I tipped the cup to my lips and drank. Immediately, a bitter, chalky taste filled my mouth. I hid my grimace, finished, and handed the cup back to Friedrich.

“This batch is called ‘Fortuna’s Favorites,’” Friedrich said. “Think you’re one of them?”

Time will tell, I thought, but said instead, “Fortes fortuna adiuvat.” Fortune favors the bold. Another of Dorio’s sayings. Maybe Fitz had the right idea.

Friedrich grunted. Ari grinned.

Rochester held off magically pinching me again. Instead, he handed me a white linen napkin.

“A gift from this batch’s sommelier,” he said. “Some words of wisdom regarding this semester’s assignment.”

I choked back a laugh. From tea leaves to wine tannins, where Angels fear not to tread . . . I accepted the napkin and wiped my mouth gently. I’d been generous in this morning’s application of Daredevil Red lip paint. Who knew what my fortune might be if I added too much of that to the mix? But the laugh died in my throat as I looked down at my napkin. Slowly, a stain of words appeared:

When traveling into the unknown, sometimes the biggest danger is the one you bring with you . . .

Chapter 4

“We should have left before we came through the gates,” Hymrag grunted. He pounded his jug on the rickety wooden table, and his frothy brew slopped onto the floor.

The younger dwarf searched the inside of the Tittering Troll. With each glance, his disdain grew.

The elder dwarf merely stroked his long beard, and sighed. “I’m sorry, Rag. I ain’t thinking straight as of late.” He lifted his hands to his temples and rubbed them, catching the curls of his red hair through his fingertips. It pained Hymrag to see his cousin as such, but Gerlong had always been in a strange state between happiness and sadness. So much so that the younger dwarf could no longer tell his elder cousin’s emotions apart. “We needed the pay, and I screwed it up.”

“Not your fault, Long,” Hymrag murmured, though he could still hear a hint of criticism in his own voice. He had to take another long swig of his drink before being able to look his friend in the eyes. “I was sure the humans were going to backstab us either way. In my eyes, you chose the best case scenario.” Hymrag gave his cousin a pat on the shoulder across the table, but he could not look into Gerlong’s eyes. The younger dwarf jostled the scanty coin bag on his belt in his unease. It felt increasingly empty after every draught.

“What if they got caught?” Gerlong banged the table with his own pint. “That Raas, if he was down here, I’d –“

“Shh!” Hymrag hissed, as five Ivaoan guards turned to face them from the other end of the smoky room. They jostled about at Gerlong's loud voice. The younger dwarf waved his hand back at their scowling faces. “You want to alert the whole bar of our contribution to an escape?” he muttered through a clenched smile. “With our luck, the humans will start calling us magical. Have our heads up in the square by sunrise.”

“Eh, I didn’t give the girl my dagger. Must have nicked it off me somewhere along the main road,” Gerlong whispered. His broad, infamous grin stretched across his face.

A cold wind brushed through as a dark hooded figure opened the door behind Gerlong. The face was masked and Hymrag watched the furtive figure slink down between the humans as it headed to the back of the pub.

“That cold gets me every time!” Gerlong exclaimed, pulling his scarf up and around his head so that all Hymrag could see of his cousin were his beady black eyes and burly bush of beard. “Winter must be coming early this year. I hope it’s not like the last one. Nearly starved crossing the mountains!”

“Yeah, well just keep it down. I’d like to get out of here in one piece!” Hymrag said. He craned his head to get view of the hooded figure, but the man was out of eyeshot.

“Oh, so now I’m being blamed for Taffon? As I recall, a certain hothead – Hey, where are you going?” Gerlong stuttered as Hymrag started to walk towards the bar.

“If you’re going to start like that, I need another drink.” The younger dwarf waved his cousin off and pushed his way through the men. He was tall for a dwarf, but the top of his head barely brushed the humans’ shoulders.

“Boy loses a toe in a bar fight and thinks he’s tougher than dragon's hide,” Hymrag heard Gerlong chuckle over the din of the crowd.

Excerpt from Ex Factor

“Ahh... Mr. Scott!” My gaze automatically swept to the front of the classroom, Keltar’s loud, obnoxious voice almost impossible to ignore. “So good of you to grace us with your presence today. I trust you’ve learned something during your time away from school? Violence is never the answer, young man.” Frowning, the surly Santa wannabe begrudgingly swept a pink slip of paper from a tall, muscular boy dressed in dark clothing.

My heart jumped a little in my chest as I surveyed the colossal mass of male student at the front of the class. What the hell were the people of Indigo Falls feeding their sons? Some type of über growth hormone? Over half the guys in the school looked as though they belonged on the cover of a weightlifting magazine—chiseled, as if cut from granite. And what was that about violence, and time away from school? Had he gotten into a fight? From his size, he looked like someone who could deliver massive amounts of pain with ease.

The new guy stood in complete silence as Keltar continued on, delivering the same tired speech he’d given me upon entering the room. The same nervous feeling that had plagued me when I entered the school just a short time ago returned with a vengeance, and I caught myself struggling to breathe. What the hell? The new guy, whoever he was, had a bizarre effect on me, and to be honest, it was freaking me out a little. I mean, hell... I hadn’t even seen his face and I had butterflies whirling in my stomach. How was that possible? What kind of person had that type of effect on people?

He turned around then, and the answers to my unspoken questions all but slapped me upside the face.

Holy Mary, Mother of Pearl...

If boys were classified into two shades: light and dark, my Paper Thief, Eli would hover somewhere in the realm of ivory or beige. But this new guy was dark. We’re talking black down to the very pit of his soul type dark.

Ebony eyes void of emotion swept over the room before finally settling on his seat: the empty chair next to Erin. Short, dark hair hugged his skull, bringing attention to the chiseled line of his jaw. His features were strong, hard, and entirely masculine—beautiful. No joke, he looked like an avenging angel hell bent on mayhem and destruction. Bad. The boy was bad to the bone.

Heat scorched my neck and cheeks and my pulse ratcheted up another notch.

Electricity arced through the air as he neared the table, and the oxygen in the room seemed to thin even more. Incapable of speech or movement, I sat open-mouthed, gaping at him like an imbecilic fool. The black T-shirt he wore stretched across his broad chest like a second skin, and revealed a set of arms, one of which sported a wicked tribal tattoo. His gait was confident, yet lazy, and clearly shouted “I don’t give a fuck. I’m only here because I have to be, so stay the hell out of my way.”

Erin cleared her throat and cast me a knowing “Well, well, well. Look who thinks the bad boy is hot” smirk.

The boy’s most stand out feature was a jagged scar which ran from the center of his skull, down along the top of his left ear. It ended just below the left half of his jaw. The skin was thick, raised and silvery pink making it obvious that whatever trauma had placed it there hadn’t happened that long ago.

Heat scored the base of my skull, and I reached, as if on autopilot, for the fat, rigid bump that crawled across my hairline. How had he gotten his scar? A hundred different scenarios played out in my head, none of which included the circumstance that had earned me mine.

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

Well, I love writing, and I love coffee almost as much as writing. I'm a Leo, so I'm a particularly proud person. My mom is my biggest inspiration when writing. She's so supportive and she's practically my best friend. When I get out of high school, I plan on attending the University of South Florida to study psychology. That was my big inspiration for Ricky's character. Crime shows are practically fuel for writing most of my stories (i.e. Law and Order: SVU, Criminal Minds, CSI: Miami, etc.). I hope in the future I become a best selling author.
2. What types of books do you write?

Mainly, I love horror books. I love the thought of being terrified. I don't know why, it's just appealing to me. I also enjoy romance, but that's just because I'm a hopeless romantic.

3. How many books have you written?

So far, I've written 8 books, including short stories. Only 3 of those books are long, though. In addition to the Controlled series, I also wrote a student/teacher romance novel. It seems to be more popular that Controlled, however Controlled was my start.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

I'm looking forward to The Fault in Our Stars. The book will always be better but I can't wait to see the movie. As for books, I'm not sure. I'm so behind on reading I don't have time to wait for any!

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

I love romance and horror stories, and the occasional mystery here and there.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

Oh that's a hard one.

1. Probably a dog.
2. A guitar.
3. A blanket.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

Yes, I have already written one actually, and I'm thinking about expanding on a third one. Maybe having it revolve around Ricky's life more (there's already a short story on that but I know a lot of people want me to expand on it).

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

Well, honestly, reading did it for me. Every time I was reading a book in middle school, I would picture it in my head or ways I would change the story line and morph it into my own. Before writing a book, I picture it as a movie in my head and write it from there. For Controlled, it was just my love of the show Criminal Minds and the love of psychology and how they try and determine how a person's mind worked when it came to murderers and all that kind of stuff. I grew obsessed with it and that's when I went to my friend and proposed my idea for Controlled. She loved it and gave me the starting support I needed to create it. Once I uploaded it to Wattpad, I was shocked when people were actually starting to like it and I ended up getting #1 horror book for a time. That's when I decided I wanted to be a writer; because of how people made me feel when they told me how much they loved something I created. The feeling is unbelievable.

Book Blast & Giveaway - Life in the Palace by Catherine Green

Life in the Palace
Life in the Palace
by Catherine Green

“We need to talk,” Tal said. Then I knew it was going to go badly. ‘We need to talk’ is the conversational equivalent of walking into your basement without turning on the light, on a dark and stormy night, when a known psychopath is on the loose. You might as well cut to the chase and slit your own throat.

Chloe Diaz assumed three things: that when Tal said that she was one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance, it was code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo;’ that the gorgeous Seth Wilks would never be her soul mate and that she’d never have to choose between them. Chloe was wrong.

Now the future of the world is in her hands, but what if price is too great to pay?

Download a FREE copy now!

This is a brief description of the plot:

After a lifetime in the shadow of her sister, Chloe is severely phobic of the chronically cool. Seth is everything she avoids; a pre-med philosophy major who works in a bar, plays in a band and is so good looking that grown women stare at him in the street. But it’s hard to say no to your soul mate. Thinking she’s maxed out her supply of destiny, Chloe settles down to enjoy the happily-ever-after.

Tal says that she’s one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance. Chloe assumes this is code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo.’ Actually Tal’s main extracurricular activity is fighting the forces of Oblivion. The People never need to hide what they are because no one ever believes them. Until Chloe does.

Chloe sets out to help Tal and The People as much as she can as an outsider. Seth says as long as no one wears their underpants on the outside Chloe can do what she likes. What he doesn’t say is that he’s also one of The People, although non-practicing. But as the Final Battle draws nearer, Chloe realizes it’s time for Seth to go collect his regulation sword. The only thing standing in his way is her. Seth says he’ll give up his place in heaven to stay with her. Chloe must choose between Seth’s soul and her own happiness.

Praise for Life in the Palace

An interesting take on the paranormal romance genre. …..While other books in the genre have unrealistic buy in to the acceptance of someone from the outside entering a "new world" Life in the Palace handled it from both the main character looking in and the dwellers of the Palace looking out at this person trying to enter their world. …….I am so happy to hear that there are more books in the series! – Yonit on Goodreads

I loved this world that Catherine Green created. I happily lost myself in the life & deep love between Chloe & Seth …..I loved the attention to detail, the fleshing out of the world around them, the obvious growth of all the characters... Even the heartbreaking choices made at the end. Book two I cannot wait to read! – Ebon Darkmyth on Smashwords

Loved it, great story line, fun characters and after reading it and thinking deeply about the duality of our lives, it made my prayers come alive! – Rebecca Wittenstein on Amazon.com

This book introduces you to a whole host of characters that you want to meet in real life. ….The action keeps you reading, while the budding love between Seth and Chloe makes you breathless. A great read. – Cypora Cohen on Amazon.co.uk
