In southwestern New Mexico, there is a large, two-century-old brush “island” in the backyard of Steve Cutler’s house. It was never cut down, Steve is told by his Navajo neighbor, because local Indian folklore claims it is a portal to the underworld. Steve is also told that the previous owner of his house ventured into the island to find his son, and neither were ever seen again. Unfazed by these fanciful legends, Cutler resolves to rid his yard of the hideous island—and makes a startling discovery!

MY REVIEW

There's a brushwood in Steve's back garden and ancient Indian folklore has it that it's a portal to the underworld. Steve's neighbour, Cory, warns him not to cut it down, particularly since the previous neighbours, Jay Tsosie and his son, vanished into the brushwood and were never seen again. Steve, of course, isn't supersititious nor does he believe in the stories, but when he stumbles upon a metal hatch that leads to a tunnel, he starts to wonder if perhaps the legend is true. Curiosity gets the best of Steve, and what he discovers is more than he could ever have imagined.

Subterranean Secret was an intriguing read. The further I read, the more I got pulled into the story. I loved the characters, particularly Aldo, but I especially liked how real the story felt. You can just imagine being in Steve's shoes. The playful relationship between Steve and Andrea felt authentic. This is a well-written story that I would recommend to everyone. A good and entertaining read.
