Book Description:
When the authorities strike to regain control over the riots in Eboracum City and use drastic measures as retaliation against the civilians, the citizens are forced to fight back to survive. A virus has spread through the Underground, taking down the refugees one by one, soon contaminating the rebels. If Thia wants to save the ones she loves, she will have to retrieve the cure, quickly. EXCERPT
"Put your hands in the air. Don't move or we'll shoot!"
The five officers take a few cautious steps forward, as if they didn't trust us to remain still. They point their rifles at us, and shivers freeze their way down my spine.
"Put your weapons down slowly and put your hands in the air. Now!"
Chi rolls his eyes, but he obliges. He lets go of my hand and pulls his crossbow off slowly. His gestures are careful, deliberate. When the crossbow has passed his head, he leans forward and leaves it on the ground before standing back up.
He lifts his hands in the air after grabbing my left wrist. His fingers slide between my knuckles so my palm is now touching his—an ultimate sign of defiance to their rules. No one can stop Chi from loving me, and his hand against mine is a one finger salute defying their authority. A smirk has appeared on his lips too, and his eyes have turned obstinate, mutinous—daring them to pull us apart. But except for this obvious provocation, Chi's face is completely blank, with no visible emotion.
He doesn’t look at me once. He's staring at the officers, brazen and challenging like a wayward child who won't be controlled. My boyfriend, forever insubordinate and refusing to comply.
An officer closes in on us from behind to force us apart. He cuffs my hands behind my back before patting me down to check that I don't carry any concealed weapons. With his rifle carefully raised, another man takes a step toward Chi.
"On your knees, rebel!"
Chi gives him a tiny, contemptuous grin, and a disdainful laugh comes rolling in his throat to spite the officer. His eyes are shining rebelliously too, as if this were the best entertainment he has had in years.
"I said on your knees!" the officer yells in Chi's face, and Chi's sardonic smile widens.
"I am not one of your sheep," he replies, the look on his face scornful. "I do not recognize your authority, and I will not kneel for the likes of you."
I inhale a sharp breath of shock when the officer sneers in disgust and kicks Chi behind the knees. He hits Chi's calves so hard that Chi tumbles down, his honey-brown eyes darkening in a second as he clenches his jaw in anger. His gaze clouds with pure hatred while the officer steps behind him with handcuffs.
The man cruelly pulls on Chi's arms to force him back up. Then he leans over his ear and speaks loud enough for everyone to hear. "We shall see if you're so stubborn under the whip, rebel!"
