Author: Madeline Wynn
Publisher: Book Baby
Pages: 250
Genre: YA Paranormal
Format: Paperback
Book Description:
Most sixteen-year olds aren't worried about the fate of their immortal souls. May Krieg should be.

Typically, honor student May's biggest problems have revolved around her super-hot arch-rival, Jack. But when a school project takes them ghost-hunting in a local cemetery, she discovers that an ominous force roams in the darkness around her.

And it follows her home.

It claws its way into her life, burning messages into her wall and imprinting them onto her body. Even worse, she can't tell if it's trying to possess her... or protect her.

May's thoughts soon become actions, causing the target of her anger severe physical pain and giving her a rush the likes of which she has never experienced.  She quickly realizes that she needs to find a way to reign in this power before she kills someone. May hates the pleasure it gives her, hates herself for hurting others, but she can't stop.

As her entire world shatters around her, she is forced to ask what her soul is worth-- and who would she risk losing her soul to save?

This story kicked off with a bang, jumping right into an ancient local legend, which is just how I like it: action, adventure and mystery, all rolled into one in the first chapter. I knew right away that I was going to enjoy this book, and I'm glad I was right. Sometimes it's fun delving into a book without first reading the blurb. I certainly had no idea what I was in for, and I was definitely surprised when all was revealed.

Daughter of the Fallen is a story about self discovery and the lengths a person would go in order to save loved ones. May is a kick-ass character full of spunk and vigor. A trip to a cemetery with her friends for a school project thrusts her into a world of danger and deceit. What May encounters turns out to be much more than just a legend. It's a doorway into her history.

I enjoyed most of the book and while there were some good twists, I found there were times when I wanted to put the book down and that was purely because the story had a way of switching from something unexpected and original to something predictable and irrelevant. There was an awful lot of time spent on May wondering about her feelings for Jack when there were far more pressing matters to address. The romance was good. The connection these scenes had to the rest of the story was weak and that put me off. At one point I'm deep into the story and the next I'm contemplating skimming through the pages. I understand the need to fill space but when it makes me disconnect from the story, it becomes less enjoyable.

One thing that grated on my nerves for the first half of the story was Cay's diction. It annoyed the hell out of me - like, seriously! I was hoping for more character development where characters like Sid and Jack were concerned for I found them to be interesting but lacking depth. Hopefully, we'll get to see more character development in book two as these secondary characters play a great role not only in May's life but also in the development of the plot.

Overall, this story has great potential. It's a good start to the series, which I look forward to continuing. I would definitely recommend the book to anyone who is up for a thrilling adventure.
