GUEST POST

I was in the waiting room of an oral surgeon’s office, while my wife was having a wisdom tooth extracted, when a strangely dressed woman appeared at the door, sat down beside me, and, after confirming who I was, proceeded to introduce herself as Margaret Parsley and ask me to write up some of her adventures. She began by telling me how she recently made a delivery for The Tooth Fairy, when the latter was laid up with an abscessed tooth. Lacking The Tooth Fairy’s ability to fly in and out through closed windows, she had to catch a child’s mother at Grand Central to hand her a five dollar bill and ask her to put it under her son’s pillow when the boy was asleep. When I told her I would be happy to write that story, Mrs. Parsley said she would visit me at my home and tell me more stories. Then I watched out the window as she and her cat mounted a broomstick and flew away. She has made numerous visits to my home since then.

I have wanted to author works of fiction since elementary school (see my memoir, When the Diamonds Were Gone), but I have always had a difficult time getting my creative muse to work for me when I needed her. Then, as I began writing the Mrs. Parsley stories, I started on my Kindle, because I was in a dentist’s waiting room, and it was the only thing I had to write on at the time. And I discovered that writing on the Kindle, which I hold close to my face because of the small letters, in an attitude similar to praying, the creative ideas come a lot more easily. I have come to believe that we’ve evolved that praying attitude because it’s conducive to introspection. For me, it’s a mantra for creativity. While this is a slow and awkward way to write, I have written all the Mrs. Parsley stories that way.
