MY REVIEW

Jory Pike has been suffering nightmares since the death of her parents. To help her sleep, her grandfather gives her a dream catcher. One night, while having a sleepover with her three friends, a storm arrives. The next morning, the gang find themselves in a parallel world where nothing is what it's supposed to be. Chaos reigns everywhere, and Jory and her friends must find the centre of this web world in order to escape before it's too late.

A fast and exhilarating journey through a world of wonder and tribulation with relatable characters who make you feel their presence from start to finish. I like a good mythology, so delving a little into Native American lore was rather exciting. I got a real Alice in Wonderland vibe from this book. While I wasn't too fond of Darcy and Lander, as they didn't add much in the way of progress, I did engage well with Jory and Choice - Albert too (can't forget granddad) - and the dynamic of their relationship. Their bond felt organic and authentic. Jory really pulled me into her world - no pun intended. She was a likeable and engaging character who carried the story well.

From time to time, I did find it hard visualising this chaotic world. The writing wasn't as visually descriptive as I would have liked for a story like this. The characters came alive but the world didn't come alive as much for me, and that's what I was most looking forward to experiencing.

It was a quick and enjoyable read.

MY REVIEW

While visiting her balcony garden, a young child finds her plants aren't blooming quite as she'd hoped they'd be.

This is a charming tale, but I did wish there had been a little more to the story. I suspect talking to plants could be a cultural element Aru is familiar with but as there was no hint to this, I may have been led to wonder why the plants were talking back to Aru. Clearly, Aru care's greatly for her garden, which did come across well. Wonderful illustrations. It was a short and sweet read that I would recommend for kids aged between 5-7.

MY REVIEW

Two young girls bond over their likes and dislikes.

This was certainly an engaging story that incorporated imojis and illustrations effectively to allow the readers to feel as though they were a part of Aru and Nishu's story. Although I suspect the girls were sisters, an acknowledge would have been nice to establish the dynamic of their relationship. Utilising the senses as a means of expressing one's likes and dislikes is a fun and effective learning tool for children. Great illustrations. It was shorter than I would have liked, but it was a great read nonetheless.
