Excerpt from The Artful

We didn’t speak anymore for a time, just walked in silence. Every other block we stumbled upon some sort of savagery. Bloodstained walls or half-eaten body parts. There was a moment I thought I would get used to it. If I saw enough of it, it wouldn’t bother me. I had to man up, after all. Here I was, acting like a child in the care of his babysitter. This wasn’t how I wanted our trip to go; I was sick of being a sidekick. I had to step up. So I straightened, shoulders out firm and head held high and sped up, trying to match Gia’s pace.

Until we turned a corner and all my resolve was thrown out the window. We ran into two bare-chested men in tattered jeans. One had a shaven head, rings stretched his earlobes, big enough for a finger to fit through, and a number of piercings along his lips, tattoos sloppily etched into his back and arms. The other was a bit smaller. He wore tight jeans and combat boots. His hair was a mess of knots and tangles, a thick beard covered most of his face, and he had a number of tattoos as well. They crouched down low, over the remains of a naked woman. Bits and pieces of flesh were gone from her face and neck. Her stomach was a gaping hole of blood and gore as they used their hands to spoon her insides into their mouths. Even though Gia held up her hand in silence, I puked, unable to help myself. They turned toward us, their carnivorous smiles and filed down teeth reminding me of a shark.

Gia turned toward me, her earlier confidence escaping with the color in her skin. “Oh, crap. Run!” She grabbed my arm and pulled me as I let loose the last of my breakfast.

“We got some fresh meat, boys!” The words seemed to chase us down the street. I ventured a look over my shoulder to see them giving chase, laughing and throwing bits of human meat at us.

“Come and get it!” shouted the other. “Dinner time!”

“We’ll feast on the boy for dinner and have the girl for play!” His voice was dry and frightening.

“Then eat her for breakfast.”

“And play with her some more!” They laughed wildly. This was a game to them. We were sport. They didn’t view us as people, only things to be played with and eaten. We can’t get caught, we can’t get caught. I would have killed Gia and myself before they caught us. We ran down a street and another, turned corner after corner and couldn’t lose them. They remained on our heels like vicious dogs. Before long, I realized we were just going in circles. Gia was panicked and no longer knew where we were going, I had to act before―

A woman stepped out from around a corner. Her face was heavily pierced. Blonde pigtails fell about her slender shoulders. She wore a school girl outfit. Her skirt was stained with blood, and her legs were covered in scabs. Pigtails wobbled as she tilted her head, flashing a sinister smile filled with shark-like teeth. The baseball bat held loosely at her side glistened with semidry blood. She snarled like a feral beast as we skidded to a halt.

Author Interview

1. What inspired you to write your first book?

I was fourteen when I started writing Arrival, my first novel, and at the time I was reading avidly (I still am, of course) but I was frustrated with the types of novels I was finding. Children’s stuff was too young, a lot of teen stuff was too young, and adult books were a bit boring. Dry, somehow—not sweeping or romantic and inherently thrilling enough. There were gems, of course, like the novels of Guy Gavriel Kay and Isobelle Carmody, which were rich and complex and challenging. I was equally inspired by these and frustrated that I wasn’t finding enough of them, so I set out to write the book I wanted to read. Of course, there is a plethora of fantastic YA stuff on the market now – if I could give my current favourite books to my teenage self she would be in absolute heaven. Now I make that a rule for myself—to always write what I would wish to read, and hope that the passion I have for these stories will engage readers.
2. Do you have a specific writing style?

Well… I suppose it depends on which genre I’m writing in. For fantasy, I like my style to be expansive and descriptive. It needs to feel rich and lush and very visual—and I have to make sure I don’t let myself get too flowery. For sci-fi I try to write more simply—less adjectives, more action… And then when I write screenplays, it’s a matter of completely stripping the writing bare and still managing to make it feel engaging and poetic. I love to write in first person point of view, but I would never write an entire novel without exploring more than one character’s perspective—one would be too restricting. Recently I have been enjoying taking inspiration from the style of writing you find in fairytales and myths.
3. How did you come up with the title?

The title for Fury presented itself very easily—because the entire book revolves around which humans have been cured of their fury. It seemed like a good, striking name to go with.
4. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

If I try to distill it down to one message, I guess it would be simply to not be afraid of whatever emotions you are feeling. That light and dark must coexist in the world, and in ourselves, and to deny that is to deny what makes us human.
5. How much of the book is realistic?

Realistic… Hmm. Well, the world is very unrealistic in the sense that it’s an imagined future where most humans have been wiped out, and the remaining survivors have had their anger ‘cured’ out of them. But I fervently hope that the emotions of the characters, their interactions, their relationships—the characters as wholes—ring true, and fill the dystopian world with authenticity. That’s the challenge of writing in a made-up world—ensuring the characters are realistic enough to be relatable to readers.
6. What book are you reading now?

I am just about to finish reading ‘Dreams of Gods and Monsters’ by Laini Taylor, and man—I LOVE it. Probably my favourite series of all time.
7. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Half Bad’ by Sally Green—she’s a beautiful writer. Pierce Brown’s debut novel ‘Red Rising’ was fantastic, and one of my new favourites. There are so many… I’m loving all the fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal stuff that is coming out now.
8. What are your current projects?

I’m currently working on the edits for the second book in my ‘Chronicles of Kaya’ Trilogy, the first of which was ‘Avery’. That will be released in July. And I’m also writing the sequel to ‘Fury’.
9. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I did a lot of research into the brain for this novel—types of memories, how emotions are triggered, the rational compartments versus the instinctive ones, where adrenalin comes from, etc—so that was an incredibly interesting thing to learn about. I researched weaponry, and the training procedures of secret agents. All of this was really important to the characters and the story. But beyond just the research I did, the writing of this novel itself was a learning experience, because it taught me to question the world more than I have done before. The science-fiction concept demanded that I be rigorous about how I look at humanity and its patterns, as well as the behavior of people under the strain of oppression.
10. What were the challenges (research, psychological etc) in bringing your story to life?

Oh, I think I accidentally answered the research stuff in the question above. But in terms of the psychological challenges for me, it was really ensuring that I immersed myself in the minds of the characters, which can be really confronting, especially when those characters are deeply damaged by their surrounds.

About the Author
Charlotte started writing her children’s fantasy series ‘The Strangers of Paragor’ as a teenager and has since gone on to publish five novels. After a Masters degree in Screenwriting she wrote ‘Avery’, the first in her adult fantasy series ‘The Chronicles of Kaya’, published by Random House. Excerpt from Against the Darkness

“Please mom,” I say, whining. “I really don’t want to go.”

“Sinta, you know I love it when you help me out, but this conversation is getting old. We’ve been going round and round like this for months. You’re going, end of story.” She pulls into an empty parking space and turns off the car. “I’ll help you with your things,” she says, popping the trunk.

Feeling defiant, and with nothing else to lose, I cross my arms and don’t move. She opens her door and gets out. I hear her saying good morning to some of the other parents and kids, but I don’t budge.

I recognize the kids passing my car with their bags either in their hands or over their shoulders. Some look my way and smile. Some even wave enthusiastically. All are in grades below mine. With this being my senior year, I don’t expect many others from my class to be here. Like I told my mom, band camp isn’t needed for anyone’s college application, especially since most of us seniors applied for college last summer or during the beginning of first semester. Besides Mia and Ian, I expect to be hanging around a bunch of younger kids.

Through the side mirror I see my mom coming up to my door. I quickly lock it. Childish? Yes.

She raps on the window and, when I don’t answer, she raps again, this time faster and harder. When I still ignore her she leans closer to the window. “For the love of God, if you keep it up I will unlock this door and drag your skinny tail out and strangle you in front of everyone here and still make you get on that bus.”

My mom has never hit me before, she’s full of threats and they usually prove empty. I turn to see her glaring daggers at me.

The look on her face says that she intends to do as she said and more. I open the door and step out and around her. I grab my duffle and sleeping bag from the trunk and head to the bus.

“Aren’t you going to at least kiss me goodbye?” she yells out after me.

“I can’t. I need to hurry. I don’t want the fun to start without me.”

“Sinta!”

Without turning I raise my hand in the air, saying bye. Of course she’ll be mad for a little while, but then she’ll start missing me. I’m her only daughter and she forced me to go on a trip I didn’t want to take. I think by tomorrow afternoon she’ll be calling the camp to check up on me.

I set my things next to the other bags on the ground by the side of the bus and climb the stairs. I only stop briefly to see if Mia has made it yet.

Yep.

She and Ian are huddled in a back seat, kissing.

Lovely. The fun is starting already.

I walk down the aisle, passing ninth and tenth graders. Closer to the back are the eleventh graders and, taking up the last three rows, the twelfth graders. Myles Jackson or MJ as he’s called and Shayla Day have a seat across from Mia and Ian. Seeing MJ surprises me, because he’s a jock and the number one football prospect from Michigan. He doesn’t need band camp to go on any application. Michael and Aaron take up another seat, with MJ’s best friend Eric and his girlfriend Melissa across from them. Then there’s Daniel and Andrew taking up a seat, and across from them is an empty one.

“We saved you a seat,” Mia says, pulling her mouth away from Ian’s long enough to talk and breathe.

“Thanks,” I say sliding into it. I put my ear buds in and pull the hood of my Huron Band sweatshirt over my head.

Just as soon as I close my eyes I feel the dip in my seat. Opening one, I peek to catch a glimpse of Wade Hill squeezing into the seat next to me.

“Sorry, Sinta,” he says, after settling in. “I asked Mrs. Franklin for my own seat but she told me there wasn’t enough room. Mrs. Burgess told me to sit next to you, since you’re so skinny.”

I close my eyes. This is a punishment.

I hear the creak of the door closing and, after a few minutes, the bus begins to move.

“Testing, testing,” Ms. Burgess’ voice projects over the loud speaker. She’s the new young teacher who just started teaching at our school this year. “How about I sing everyone a nice little lullaby to get you all to sleep, hmm?

Oh. My. God.

“Can someone please tell her she isn’t auditioning for American Idol,” I mutter.

Wade laughs. His meaty arm brushes up against mine as he does.

Let the fun begin.
