Blog Tour Interview & Giveaway - Fury by Charlotte McConaghy

FURY

Fury: Book 1 of The Cure
by Charlotte McConaghy
Pages: 348 pg
Publication Date: March 25th, 2014
Publisher: Momentum Books, Pan Macmillan

Book Description:
In the tradition of Divergent comes a novel about a world where negative emotions are stolen ... and only those with fury can stand up and fight.

Eighteen-year-old Josephine Luquet wakes naked and covered in blood that is not hers on the same day every year—when the blood moon is full. Josi has not responded to the "Cure"—an immunization against anger mandated by the government—and believes herself to be a threat to others.

Then she meets Luke. Luke has had the Cure but seems different to the other "drones"—and he's dead set on helping Josi discover the truth about herself before the next blood moon.

But time is running out. Is Luke willing to risk his life to be near her? Does he truly understand what violence she is capable of?

Raw and full of passion, Fury is a story of love in a dystopian world, and how much we are willing to forgive in the struggle to remember our humanity.

Author Interview

1. What inspired you to write your first book?

I was fourteen when I started writing Arrival, my first novel, and at the time I was reading avidly (I still am, of course) but I was frustrated with the types of novels I was finding. Children’s stuff was too young, a lot of teen stuff was too young, and adult books were a bit boring. Dry, somehow—not sweeping or romantic and inherently thrilling enough. There were gems, of course, like the novels of Guy Gavriel Kay and Isobelle Carmody, which were rich and complex and challenging. I was equally inspired by these and frustrated that I wasn’t finding enough of them, so I set out to write the book I wanted to read. Of course, there is a plethora of fantastic YA stuff on the market now – if I could give my current favourite books to my teenage self she would be in absolute heaven. Now I make that a rule for myself—to always write what I would wish to read, and hope that the passion I have for these stories will engage readers.
2. Do you have a specific writing style?

Well… I suppose it depends on which genre I’m writing in. For fantasy, I like my style to be expansive and descriptive. It needs to feel rich and lush and very visual—and I have to make sure I don’t let myself get too flowery. For sci-fi I try to write more simply—less adjectives, more action… And then when I write screenplays, it’s a matter of completely stripping the writing bare and still managing to make it feel engaging and poetic. I love to write in first person point of view, but I would never write an entire novel without exploring more than one character’s perspective—one would be too restricting. Recently I have been enjoying taking inspiration from the style of writing you find in fairytales and myths.
3. How did you come up with the title?

The title for Fury presented itself very easily—because the entire book revolves around which humans have been cured of their fury. It seemed like a good, striking name to go with.
4. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

If I try to distill it down to one message, I guess it would be simply to not be afraid of whatever emotions you are feeling. That light and dark must coexist in the world, and in ourselves, and to deny that is to deny what makes us human.
5. How much of the book is realistic?

Realistic… Hmm. Well, the world is very unrealistic in the sense that it’s an imagined future where most humans have been wiped out, and the remaining survivors have had their anger ‘cured’ out of them. But I fervently hope that the emotions of the characters, their interactions, their relationships—the characters as wholes—ring true, and fill the dystopian world with authenticity. That’s the challenge of writing in a made-up world—ensuring the characters are realistic enough to be relatable to readers.
6. What book are you reading now?

I am just about to finish reading ‘Dreams of Gods and Monsters’ by Laini Taylor, and man—I LOVE it. Probably my favourite series of all time.
7. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Half Bad’ by Sally Green—she’s a beautiful writer. Pierce Brown’s debut novel ‘Red Rising’ was fantastic, and one of my new favourites. There are so many… I’m loving all the fantasy/sci-fi/paranormal stuff that is coming out now.
8. What are your current projects?

I’m currently working on the edits for the second book in my ‘Chronicles of Kaya’ Trilogy, the first of which was ‘Avery’. That will be released in July. And I’m also writing the sequel to ‘Fury’.
9. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?

I did a lot of research into the brain for this novel—types of memories, how emotions are triggered, the rational compartments versus the instinctive ones, where adrenalin comes from, etc—so that was an incredibly interesting thing to learn about. I researched weaponry, and the training procedures of secret agents. All of this was really important to the characters and the story. But beyond just the research I did, the writing of this novel itself was a learning experience, because it taught me to question the world more than I have done before. The science-fiction concept demanded that I be rigorous about how I look at humanity and its patterns, as well as the behavior of people under the strain of oppression.
10. What were the challenges (research, psychological etc) in bringing your story to life?

Oh, I think I accidentally answered the research stuff in the question above. But in terms of the psychological challenges for me, it was really ensuring that I immersed myself in the minds of the characters, which can be really confronting, especially when those characters are deeply damaged by their surrounds.

Excerpt from Against the Darkness

“Please mom,” I say, whining. “I really don’t want to go.”

“Sinta, you know I love it when you help me out, but this conversation is getting old. We’ve been going round and round like this for months. You’re going, end of story.” She pulls into an empty parking space and turns off the car. “I’ll help you with your things,” she says, popping the trunk.

Feeling defiant, and with nothing else to lose, I cross my arms and don’t move. She opens her door and gets out. I hear her saying good morning to some of the other parents and kids, but I don’t budge.

I recognize the kids passing my car with their bags either in their hands or over their shoulders. Some look my way and smile. Some even wave enthusiastically. All are in grades below mine. With this being my senior year, I don’t expect many others from my class to be here. Like I told my mom, band camp isn’t needed for anyone’s college application, especially since most of us seniors applied for college last summer or during the beginning of first semester. Besides Mia and Ian, I expect to be hanging around a bunch of younger kids.

Through the side mirror I see my mom coming up to my door. I quickly lock it. Childish? Yes.

She raps on the window and, when I don’t answer, she raps again, this time faster and harder. When I still ignore her she leans closer to the window. “For the love of God, if you keep it up I will unlock this door and drag your skinny tail out and strangle you in front of everyone here and still make you get on that bus.”

My mom has never hit me before, she’s full of threats and they usually prove empty. I turn to see her glaring daggers at me.

The look on her face says that she intends to do as she said and more. I open the door and step out and around her. I grab my duffle and sleeping bag from the trunk and head to the bus.

“Aren’t you going to at least kiss me goodbye?” she yells out after me.

“I can’t. I need to hurry. I don’t want the fun to start without me.”

“Sinta!”

Without turning I raise my hand in the air, saying bye. Of course she’ll be mad for a little while, but then she’ll start missing me. I’m her only daughter and she forced me to go on a trip I didn’t want to take. I think by tomorrow afternoon she’ll be calling the camp to check up on me.

I set my things next to the other bags on the ground by the side of the bus and climb the stairs. I only stop briefly to see if Mia has made it yet.

Yep.

She and Ian are huddled in a back seat, kissing.

Lovely. The fun is starting already.

I walk down the aisle, passing ninth and tenth graders. Closer to the back are the eleventh graders and, taking up the last three rows, the twelfth graders. Myles Jackson or MJ as he’s called and Shayla Day have a seat across from Mia and Ian. Seeing MJ surprises me, because he’s a jock and the number one football prospect from Michigan. He doesn’t need band camp to go on any application. Michael and Aaron take up another seat, with MJ’s best friend Eric and his girlfriend Melissa across from them. Then there’s Daniel and Andrew taking up a seat, and across from them is an empty one.

“We saved you a seat,” Mia says, pulling her mouth away from Ian’s long enough to talk and breathe.

“Thanks,” I say sliding into it. I put my ear buds in and pull the hood of my Huron Band sweatshirt over my head.

Just as soon as I close my eyes I feel the dip in my seat. Opening one, I peek to catch a glimpse of Wade Hill squeezing into the seat next to me.

“Sorry, Sinta,” he says, after settling in. “I asked Mrs. Franklin for my own seat but she told me there wasn’t enough room. Mrs. Burgess told me to sit next to you, since you’re so skinny.”

I close my eyes. This is a punishment.

I hear the creak of the door closing and, after a few minutes, the bus begins to move.

“Testing, testing,” Ms. Burgess’ voice projects over the loud speaker. She’s the new young teacher who just started teaching at our school this year. “How about I sing everyone a nice little lullaby to get you all to sleep, hmm?

Oh. My. God.

“Can someone please tell her she isn’t auditioning for American Idol,” I mutter.

Wade laughs. His meaty arm brushes up against mine as he does.

Let the fun begin.

Author Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

I have been writing since I was a teenager and I have loved reading since long before that. I live with my husband, his three pythons and my cat in good old New South Wales, Australia. Believe it or not but I drive trains when I’m not busy writing. I am incredibly creative and enjoy all different types of craft from card making to scrapbooking. I love watching old movies and have quite an addiction to sweet foods. Writing though is the most special thing for me because I love to create worlds and characters that others can relate to.

2. What types of books do you write?

Being a romantic, most of my stories are full of romance. My love of fantasy also plays a big part in my writing. I write mostly young adult fiction but have started into the realms of adult fiction recently.

3. How many books have you written?

The completed books I have on Wattpad is about ten. In my craft/writing room though I have dozens that are waiting to be written.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Jasper Fforde Painting by Numbers. I just read though that it isn’t going to be until next year so I am disappointed but still eagerly awaiting. The first book from this was as complicated as it was intriguing and I completely loved it.

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

Nothing can beat a good romance story or a good young adult story. I have my fantasy favourites as well. Of course any Jasper FForde books too, he is just a fantastic author.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1. Books.
2. Writing paper.
3. A very good working pen.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

No I am not considering a sequel at the moment. Even though I left the ending quite open, which I do with all my stories in case I want to revisit them someday. I am busy working on other stories at the moment though

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

I write because it gives me a sense of freedom from real life. It allows you to step back and be someone else for a while. Once I started on Wattpad and found others enjoyed my scribbles I found the biggest inspiration I have ever had. Now I write for my followers as much as I write for me.

Author Interview

1. What inspired you to write your first book?

The inspiration for me probably started as a kid. I would read books by Victoria Holt (an oldie, but a goodie!) and T.C. Andrews (among others) and they would just suck me in completely. I was so passionate about them that I found myself wanting to create something that could really move people; I wanted to give people a great adventure that they could be involved in. I was also inspired by Stephenie Myers’ story. She was a mom at home with kids and just jumped into a story of her own. That may sound cheesy, but I was very much at the same point when I began writing The Wasteland. I thought, “I want to write something simply because I love it and I don’t care if it ever goes anywhere!”

2. Do you have a specific writing style?

I don’t really have a style, except to say that I have to come to a very vulnerable place inside when I write.  I have to be okay with letting go of control and not caring what others may think and when I do that then the style and substance of my writing begins to take shape. I hope my writing is poetic. I try to weave words together so they seem more like art than anything else. There is no formula, it’s about freedom.

3. How did you come up with the title?

I thought about the original picture in my mind when I began writing the book. In its simplest form, I was writing about a desert or a wasteland. I pictured two women lost and confused and a very handsome, elusive stranger who was determined to protect them. All around there was red dirt and wind and a complete lack of life. The title was an overflow of that picture.

4. Is there a message in The Wasteland that you want readers to grasp?

Oh wow! It’s about so many things. There isn’t one central message. Just like we learn so many lessons in life, this book evolved to include an array of subjects. One of my favorites has to do with a crossing of socioeconomic borders. No matter where you are, there are beautiful people.  They maybe hidden underneath rags or stress or downcast eyes, but they are there and if you search for it, you’ll find beauty everywhere. This was inspired by my visits to the country of Haiti. The country is in complete disarray, but the people are incredible and ferocious and beautiful! To the point where I could’ve given up my life here and lived there (and I don’t say that lightly).

This leads me to another message I would love people to grasp when they read my book…that of powerful love. How love can come in many forms and it really does have power. Love between a man and woman, between siblings and friends; between a woman and her children. Life could be crumbling around you, but you are still strong if you have love. I’m not talking about rainbows and bunny rabbits. No, I’m talking about the tough, abrasive, heart-shattering stuff.

And I believe everyone…everyone…has capacity for this passionate kind of love.

5. How much of the book is realistic?

Well, the setting is a different world filled with Kingdoms, glowing Guardians, untainted Royals and all the magic that can come from a place such as that. However, I believe very much that the relationships within the book are realistic. The subject matter has a great undercurrent of realism.

6. What book are you reading now?

I’m the mom of five kids with a brain that never stops whirling, so naturally I read more than one book at a time! I’m rereading “The Wasteland” because I’m prepping to write the sequel and I want to make sure I have all the details of what I wrote cemented in my brain. I’m also reading “Writing Down the Bones” by Natalie Goldberg and a book about schooling called “Dumbing us Down” by John Taylor Gatto. That last one is fairly controversial, but I’m curious to read what he has to say.

7. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

In the past year, I’ve been focusing all my energy on having babies and adjusting to our newly adopted children and lifestyle. I’ve been reading more self-help books than fiction because sometimes it feels like I’m drowning in a sea of kids! I haven’t had a chance to check out any new authors lately, but I am very much looking forward to the day when I can. I dream of sitting down in the quiet with a good book DAILY!

8. What are your current projects?

We’ve recently added a new baby and two children from Haiti to our family, so my life has been a whirlwind! I’m working on writing more regularly for my blog. I’m also working on the sequel to “The Wasteland”. In the near future, I’ll be working on some more stories based on people I’ve interviewed.  Stay tuned!!

9. Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it?

To trust myself. I struggle with being afraid that I won’t measure up or that people won’t respond to the things I have to say.  This experience has taught me to let go and simple BE who I am.

10. What were the challenges (research, psychological etc) in bringing this story to life?

Finding time to write was a challenge.  That still takes a great amount of discipline.  I wrote a completely horrible first draft and it was tough to decide what parts to keep and what to throw out. Mostly, it was perseverance.  I just had to keep going and not give up.  That was the biggest challenge.

Release Blitz & Giveaway - An Etiquette Guide to the End Times by Maia Sepp

An Etiquette Guide to the End Times
by Maia Sepp
Women's Fiction / Dystopian
Date Published: June 6, 2014

Book Description:
Good manners never go out of style…do they?

There aren’t any zombies (yet), but the world is still at the brink of destruction: It’s 2028 and global warming has led to rising oceans, crazy weather, and resource scarcity. On top of that, someone just turned the Internet off. Seeing as how it’s humanity’s last chance to turn things around manners are, understandably, a bit frayed.

Etiquette buff Olive O’Malley is busy microfarming her urban property and minding her own business (and her chickens) when the government comes calling. Their goal is to push the populace towards carbon-neutrality while keeping kvetching to a minimum, and they come with a proposal: transition Olive’s popular etiquette column to a radio show for the masses, and they’ll help Olive find her grandfather, who’s gone missing.

Olive doesn’t trust the hipster government officials who try to bribe her with delicious-but-probably-a-little-evil chocolate pastries, and declines their offer. (Politely, of course.) But they won't take no for an answer, and soon Olive is knee-deep in turmoil, eco-terrorism, and missing chickens. Now she has to untangle herself from their demands and figure out how to make sure her family (and her poultry) are safe before it’s too late.

Excerpt from An Etiquette Guide to the End Times

My superhero power is definitely not sleeping. When I was looking for a house, my realtor rhapsodized about this bedroom’s perfect southern exposure, about the tastefully herbaceous wall treatment and charming old-world feel. Right now my room could be more accurately described as a floral-wallpapered sauna, full of an impossible heat, like three Julys stuffed into one. It isn’t helping.
I watch the overhead fan stop again, gyrate, and then restart before I roll over, the sheets coming with me. After a minute I shift to the other side, flinging the covers away with a sigh. The fan finally grinds to a halt, probably the victim of a wiring problem I haven’t been able to pin down, although lately I’ve been thinking it might just hate me.
I relocate to the living room and angle the pedestal fan my way. God, it’s hot. I close my eyes and lean back on the couch for a minute, hoping sleep will take me. The sofa is a faux leather hand-me-down that’s supple after years of wear, smelling faintly earthy, soft against my skin.
Eventually I switch the TV on. Our cable hasn’t worked properly in months, service so erratic it’s like the people running the company are legless, as my grandfather Fred would say–a charming Irish way of saying spectacularly drunk, even though my grandfather hasn’t seen Ireland since he was a child. My eyes land on Fred’s easy chair, a pale green monstrosity he could barely squeeze through the front door when I finally convinced him to move in with me. His pipe, his books, and his old-man slippers are still where he left them.
After flipping through a bunch of static, I shut the TV off and switch to the radio, which promptly announces it’s five-thirty in the morning. I ponder what to do next, discarding juggling, mind reading, and origami, although I spend more time thinking about mind reading than I probably should, considering I’m the only one here. Finally I pull my computer tablet onto my lap and turn it on. I write an etiquette column for a spunky arts and culture website, and my latest instalment is due on Friday; other people’s problems are always a delightful way to get my mind off my own. I start to page through the letters, which all start with Dear Olive. Dear Olive, I’m convinced my neighbour is milking my goat. Dear Olive, my neighbour’s windmill is keeping me up at night. Dear Olive, my wife is hoarding solar panels. What do I do?
Three crashing noises erupt above my head, each more ominous than the next. I wait for it to stop, but twenty minutes later I’m clinging to the side of my house, staring down a pair of raccoons who seem intent on defiling my solar array. For a long while it’s just the three of us, locked in visual combat, but it’s my roof and unless they start paying rent, they’ve got to go.  Eventually they get spooked by the noise of the six a.m. domestic surveillance drone overhead, which would make this the first time I’ve ever been happy to see a drone. I watch as it starts its first pass of the morning. They’re smaller than the military version–sleek, modern, ever-watchful. Rumour is they’re even biodegradable, although that hasn’t exactly endeared them to the population.
After the raccoons finally lumber off I pull myself onto the roof and take a look at the solar panel they’ve sullied, the wires connecting the array to my house almost stripped. It’s not easy to carry out rooftop repairs quietly at six in the morning, and it definitely wouldn’t be polite to wake anyone up, but I don’t want to be back up here tomorrow, either. If I leave the panel like this, they’ll come back and finish the job, I know it. They’re organized.
I look up when a newfangled Town Car, still boxy and authoritarian but now electric-powered, turns onto my street. I watch it as it goes; there are almost no cars on the roads these days, and the sight makes a faint sense of unease pulse through me. I hope whoever’s in that car isn’t carrying bad news for one of my neighbours.
After it eases past my house I try to concentrate on how to get myself off this roof. I’ve brought my very last roll of duct tape with me and after a moment of conflict, I wrestle a piece off and start to fix the panel, but my foot slips and my right hip ends up bouncing off the shingles. I pull myself into a sitting position to gather my wits, my stomach clenched into the size of a peanut, my breath suddenly ragged and shaky. I don’t want to go splat on the driveway beside my house. It’s a bungalow, true, and not that far to fall, but it’s still a worry.
Over my left shoulder the sunrise glows on the horizon, beautiful in a terrifying sort of way. It’s hard not to be nervous about what the sun will do to us today; so far the summer of 2028 has broken four temperature records, slow-cooking our city under our feet, making everything smell like asphalt and failure.
