Book Blast & Giveaway - Killer Within by Jeff Gunhus

Killer Within
Killer Within by Jeff Gunhus

Arnie Milhouse is a murderer. A millionaire with dozens of kills in his past and no one the wiser. But when his name surfaces in connection with the death of a D.C. call girl, Arnie knows it’s only a matter of time before the FBI puts the pieces together. As he makes plans to disappear and leave his life in Annapolis behind forever, he meets a beautiful, mysterious woman who takes an interest in him. The perfect final victim. He can’t believe his luck.

Only luck has nothing to do with it. Allison McNeil has returned to Annapolis, a city that she promised herself she would never come back to, not while the cruel memories of her time at the United States Naval Academy still haunt her. But she’s willing to do just about anything to get close to Arnie, even if it means having to face down the demons of her past. Her plans work and soon she and Arnie find themselves locked in a dangerous dance of seduction and betrayal. But Arnie isn’t the only one who carries a secret and the dark truth about Allison McNeil makes a final confrontation between them inevitable. Neither of them know it, but they're on a collision course that only one of them will survive.

Killer Within Excerpt

Arnie Milhouse never considered himself much of a hero. Even as his fingers flexed around the Bic pen he was about to jab into the neck of the man in front of him, he still had his doubts.

Twenty minutes earlier, when he first walked into Rocco’s Convenience and Liquor, the place seemed to stand a good chance of living up to the promise of its name. There was plenty of liquor and not another soul to mess up the convenience of it all. The empty store wasn’t especially unusual for ten-thirty on a Tuesday night. Friday would have been a different story. Workers trading their paychecks for cheap whiskey and smokes; old ladies down to get their Quik Pick lottos; high school kids pimping beers off whoever looked least likely to care about the law. But this was a Tuesday and everything was quiet at Rocco’s.

Arnie shuffled to the back of the store, curling his toes to keep his ill-fitting slippers from sliding off his feet. Vaguely, he wondered if he ought to have put on his shoes before leaving the house. He shrugged away the thought when he reached the wall of refrigerators in the back of the store. He opened the door and pulled out a milk jug. White flakes coated the plastic where past spills had dried, but the expiration date was still a respectable five days away. It would do.

He stood at the counter to pay for his milk, shooting for the minimum acceptable amount of interaction with the acne-tortured teenager brooding behind the cash register. The kid’s face made him think too much about his own awkward adolescence for him to make eye contact for too long. He caught himself running his fingers over the pockmarks left from acne so bad it made him stay home from school some days in embarrassment. He remembered the jokes from other kids, the sympathetic looks from teachers, the tut-tut of the dermatologist who never found a way to help him. He felt a surge of anger at the kid for dredging up those painful memories. Arnie preferred to forget those days. Not that things were much better now.

“What’s that?” the kid asked.

“What?”

“What’s not better now?”

Arnie hadn’t realized he’d said anything. “Nothing. I wasn’t talking to you.”

The kid rolled his eyes and told Arnie how much he owed. Arnie handed over some cash and waited for his change, taking in the space around Rocco’s cash register. It looked like a million other places; the yellowy laminate surface stained and chipped away, rows of ninety-nine cent packets of herbal supplements, a display of Harley-Davidson lighters, walls of breath mints and racks of chewing gum.

Boring and expected. But then again, what in life wasn’t?

Arnie hadn’t always felt that way. Like any young man, he had once been full of expectation, ready for the road to rise before him in a never-ending adventure. Ready to make his mark. Slay dragons. But none of it was meant to be.

Things had started out in his favor. He was good-looking, filling out and growing into his own during college. He possessed a work ethic and was wicked smart. Even Mensa, the society of high IQs, had been impressed by his intellect and sent him a document to print out certifying that he, Arnie Milhouse, was a damn genius.

You’re so smart that you’re stupid, was his wife’s favorite line, a battering ram that smashed into him the second he had the poor taste to feel good about himself. Problem was, she wasn’t wrong.

He over-analyzed every decision he faced, seeing too many paths to ever choose a direction. This made him indecisive and a chronic second-guesser. It was his nature to not only see faults in others, but to constantly point them out without filter. This critical nature coupled with a lack of any social skills made normal relationships all but impossible.

So, he’d sought refuge in the certainty and the infallibility of math and computers. Over time he turned meek and timid. He didn’t stop to realize the mouse he had let himself become until it was the only thing he knew how to be. He was disgusted with the man he saw in the mirror, but it was the hand life had dealt him.

Then the door to Rocco’s Convenience and Liquor opened and life took an unexpected turn.

Praise for Night Chill:

"...unforgettable, exceptional debut. A primitive ritual and an ancient secret threaten a family's safety in this heart-pounding tale of horrific madness, Guaranteed to trigger night sweats along with a childlike, irrational fear of the creaky attic, Jeff Gunhus's Night Chill will not disappoint horror fans." - Foreword Clarion Reviews - 5 STARS

Gunhus delivers a taut supernatural thriller...the powerful Nate Huckley terrifies, and the assorted cast of human antagonists add to the white-knuckle tension. All the chops of an action-packed horror tale." - Kirkus Reviews

"A masterful storyteller with an eye for eccentric detail...Gunhus exhibits a distinctive style typically found in seasoned authors like Dean Koontz and Stephen King." - Clarion Foreword Reviews 5 STARS

Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

Well, I'm almost seventeen years old and I've been writing since I was twelve. Funny enough, I've always hated reading and writing, it wasn't until my older sister pushed me to read and . . . I loved it. Even though I'm a slow reader and sometimes, it tends to bore me, I really do love going into a whole new world. I've never really had a home, I've lived on the road most of my life since I've been to forty-seven states in all of America, due to my mother's job. But even though I hate leaving behind friends and packin' up, I can't say I hate moving to somewhere new. I love traveling. I aspire to become a professional photographer and I do want to take writing to a new level (publishing), but I do need a job for the payments.

2. What types of books do you write?

I write all kinds, just not fan fiction or romantic werewolf/vampire. But I love all the other genres, so when it comes time, I will be writing all other genres. However, at the current moment, I'm writing a drama/non-teen fiction/romance

3. How many books have you written?

Since I've began writing: About seven or eight. On Wattpad: Two. My best: One.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

I'm looking forward to reading Allegiant, since I haven't gotten a chance to buy nor read it, even though I know the ending. I'm looking forward to see Divergent, Frozen, and Mockingjay part 1.

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

All kinds. From horror, to historical fiction, to romance, to action.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1. My iPod that never runs out of battery
2. A hot guy.
3. My computer that will get internet access anywhere. :3 Hahaa, I wish.

7. Are you considering a sequel?

Considering, yes. The book is longer than I would have expected, so either A) if it gets published, which I know will be a long shot, it'll have to be in two books - however, I already know where to end the first. Or B) if I can't get it published for it to be in stores, I will probably just keep it as one long book. But the first book will be called A Nightmare's Fate and the second, A Fate's Nightmare.

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

When I first began, I had wrote my poems and songs and short stories on a girlie website called i-Dressup.com and people would say how awesome it was (although, back then, my stories sucked) and some even got inspired to write themselves because of what I wrote. So to give people inspiration was a huge honor for me, and so I began to write more. I loved how you create a world of your own, your own story and such, it's awesome.

Summary from Goodreads:

Norah Lukens needs to uncover the truth about the fabled lost city of Cobbogoth. After her archaeologist uncle’s murder, Norah is asked to translate his old research journal for evidence and discovers that his murder was a cover-up for something far more sinister.

When she turns to neighbor and only friend James Riley for help, she realizes that not only is their bitter-sweet past haunting her every step, but James is keeping dangerous secrets. Can Norah discover what they are before its too late to share her own.

Uncovering Cobbogoth Excerpt

Nor? ” James rubbed the sleep from his eyes with the heel of his hand. One look at me, however, and he was wide awake. “What is it? Is it Gram?”

“No. No, not that,” I croaked, guilt rushing through me for causing him more worry.

The panic left his eyes, and he squinted at me.

I shuffled self-consciously. I knew I looked terrible. I’d been up crying half the night after my argument with Uncle Jack about James breaking my heart. Finally, I snuck out my window, climbed down my cherry tree, and headed to the fire station to see James.

“Hey, Riley! Cut the lights, man!”

James glanced back into the dark, communal bedroom where the rest of the night shift firefighters slept.

“Come here.” He took my hand, closed the bedroom door and, in stockinged feet, led me down the hall. A moment later, we were sitting side by side on the stairs. James still held my hand, and I hoped he’d never let go. I watched as he reached into his shirt pocket, fishing around until he found a piece of peppermint gum.

He offered me half. I shook my head, so he stuffed the whole thing in his mouth. Then he turned those kind, piercing eyes on me.

Growing warm under his gaze, I cleared my throat. “I-I’m so sorry to wake you up,” I started. “I hoped you’d still be awake. It’s just . . .”

James mindlessly ran his thumb in circles over my knuckles. I lost my train of thought. Blinking, I took a deep breath and plunged on. “My uncle . . . he wants me to stop spending time with you. I mean, I can still help with Gram and everything, he just doesn’t want us hanging out any other time.” I sucked in another unsteady breath. “But I—I can’t let that happen, James. You’re my only friend.”

James was quiet for what seemed like forever. I prayed he wouldn’t just shrug his broad shoulders and shuffle back to bed.

To my relief, he reached up, rumpling his chocolate curls with his free hand. “Did he give you a reason why?” he asked, avoiding my eyes. I shook my head. “I think he’s afraid you’ll end up hurting me—that you’ll break my heart. You know how protective he is.”

He was silent again, this time longer.

Stupid, Norah! Why had I come here? Why did I think James would even care about this—that it would upset him at all?

Finally, James let out his breath. And the next moment, he was pressing the back of my hand to his lips.

I swallowed my shock. I’d never imagined that his lips could be so warm and soft. The contact sent a shock straight to my heart.

“What do you think?” James mumbled a moment later, still contemplating my hand. “Do you think I could hurt you?”

I wanted to burst into tears all over again. “I don’t think, James, I know. But it would be worth it.”

James chuckled this time, resting his forehead against my temple. “Now that’s a compliment.” I smiled. Having him so close—smelling the fresh peppermint on his breath—was a fierce mixture of agony and ecstasy. They were feelings I’d never imagined I could feel.

“I’d never hurt you, Nor,” James whispered at last, and his breath tickled my neck. “Not really.”

Author Interview with Amanda Aksel

1. What inspired you to want to become a writer?

I believe that being a writer is something you’re born with. It’s in your DNA. Writing has been part of my artistic expression since I was a child. Truth be told, I had no interest in being a writer even though I wrote a lot. But eventually, it caught up to me.

2. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

I’ve just published my first book, but before The Man Test, I ghostwrote a New York Times Bestseller titled Vision: Your Pathway to Victory. Seeing the book on the list was worth all the hard work we put into that project.

3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

I would love to have a signed copy of Love The One You’re With by Emily Giffin. She’s my favorite author, and she has a career that I aspire to.

4. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

I wish I could freeze time so I could get more work done, take a nap, or catch up on Grey’s Anatomy and not lose any time.

5. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

If you’ve ever questioned your man’s fidelity, then you relate to Marin’s journey in The Man Test.

6. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

Yes, The Man Test is the first in a four part series. The next book, The Commitment Test, is expected to be out late this year.

7. Do you write as you go or do you have the book planned before you start the first draft?

I like to create a pretty basic outline of the story and the character arcs, then it’s just connecting the dots with words.

8. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

I can’t wait for Emily Giffin’s new title in May and I’m really looking forward to watching The Other Woman with Cameron Diaz. It totally relates to my book.

9. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

San Clemente, CA.

10. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?

There are some similarities with Marin Johns and me. She’s determined and curious, but most of all she’s a romantic at heart.

Guest Post: Dog People

Anyone ever tell you if your dog doesn’t trust someone, you shouldn’t either? But if your dog likes them then they are probably okay? There is no doubt that dogs have a sense about people. They can tell when you’re scared, hurt, angry, or in need of their unique companionship. In fact, science now proves what those of us who are dog lovers have known for years: our brains are linked. (See this article for details on the study http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-26276660 )

In fiction, it really is no different. Sparky forms a special bond with Todd Clarke in Stray Ally, and immediately it tells us something about both of them. Sparky is a good boy, and Todd is a good man. If you are like me, and apparently some of the women I dated before I found my wife, you’ve used your dog to help you size someone up.

Now you can use Google and other services to search, find ‘facts’ about someone from their credit score and criminal record to their grades in high school. This history often doesn’t reveal to you their whole story, or who they might have become through those experiences. If you based buying my books or our friendship on that kind of information, you would find less than stellar credit scores, an arrest record (albeit without major violations or convictions), and mediocre grades in high school, followed by a checkered and mediocre formal education history.

It’s hardly the sum of the man. Regret is a killer, and while I might change some things about my past, I wouldn’t be who I am or where I am without them. I can tell you this: from the time I was very young even until today, you introduce me to your dog? Be prepared for him to have another friend for life. And if your dog trusts me, surely you have to. After all, he’s a good dog, isn’t he?

Stray Ally Excerpt

The woods came alive.

Yellow eyes stared at his every move. Something panted right behind him.

Something was there; he didn't even have to look. Half mile to the chopper, and safety. He ran, his breath coming in ragged gasps, legs on fire with every step.

Tripping over a root, his arms spun for balance. He grabbed at a tree for support, a weak young sapling. It bent under his weight, slowing his fall, whipping from his hand as he released it. As his palm brushed a fallen log, a splinter pushed deep into it, causing him to cry out.

A bark followed by a growl sounded, close. Too close.

Picking himself up, he continued to run. Were the others with him?

He didn't care. Colonel Anderson possessed a well-founded fear of canines, and panic took over his mind.

There it was. The chopper. He crossed the clearing and leapt inside.

Safe.

"Chief, get this bird in the air!"

No response.

"Chief?"

He crawled forward.

The pilot's throat was torn wide open, canine teeth marks surrounding the wound, blood saturating the front of his uniform. From behind him, he heard a deep growl. Pulling his sidearm he turned to face his worst fear.

Bookvie: The Monuments Men - out February 7, 2014

Who's in it:
George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray

What's it all about (book blurb from Goodreads):
At the same time Adolf Hitler was attempting to take over the western world, his armies were methodically seeking and hoarding the finest art treasures in Europe. The Fuehrer had begun cataloguing the art he planned to collect as well as the art he would destroy: "degenerate" works he despised.

In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Monuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture.

Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments Men and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis.

Cover Reveal & Giveaway - Forever Layla by Melissa Turner Lee

Forever Layla
Release date: May 27, 2014
Publisher: AltWit Press

Book Summary:
What if the woman you envied most is the person you are destined to become?

In 1994, high school senior David Foster was the lackey and soundboard geek for his best friend's grunge band. During spring break, the band lands a dream gig playing at a motel in Myrtle Beach, SC. David expected all the girls to ogle the guys on stage, but when a beautiful blond "Bond Girl" approaches him and calls him by name, he's shocked to find out she knows more about him than a stranger should.

She even knows about his notebooks and his visions of time travel.

What she thought was a quick time-travel-sightseeing trip takes a surprising turn when she meets the young adult version of the man she'd heard stories about as a child. His fairy-tale romance with the woman he'd loved, Layla, inspired her to accept nothing less than a love just as strong...but hopefully not as tragic. When she won't tell the younger version of him her name, he calls her Layla--and the world as she knows it changes forever.
