Book Blitz & Giveaway - Against The Boards by Danica Flynn

Against The Boards
(Philadelphia Bulldogs, #3)
Author: Danica Flynn
Publication Date: March 1st, 2022
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance / Sports

Book Description:
ROXANNE
When I applied for a job with the Philadelphia Bulldogs, I never thought they would offer it to me on the spot. Luckily for me, my twin was letting me stay at his place while he played hockey overseas.

Then he dropped the bomb that Benny was his new roommate. You know, the only guy on the team I can’t stand. I don’t know how we’re gonna survive being roommates. Because honestly? Some days I wasn’t sure if I wanted to kiss him or punch him.

BENNY
When TJ told me his sister was moving to Philly and needed a place to stay, I knew I should have high-tailed it out of town for the offseason.

But I didn’t. Because I’m all sorts of foolish when it comes to that feisty woman. Every time our paths cross, I open my mouth and make her mad. Usually with good reason, too.

The two of us being roommates was bad news. We’re either going to kill each other or I’m gonna give her the best kiss of her life. I’m not sure which is worse.

The Philadelphia Bulldogs hockey team are back, in this all new-standalone novel. Books can be enjoyed in any order. If you love a steamy enemies to lovers romance, this one is for you.

Book Blitz & Giveaway - Fire of the Forebears by L.A. Buck

Fire of the Forebears
(Heritor’s Helm, #1)
Author: L.A. Buck
Publication Date: February 22nd, 2022
Genre: Adult Fantasy

Book Description:
Pitted against one another, with the people and country they love in jeopardy, the daughter of a deserter and the son of the king have a chance to fulfill their forebears’ legacy—or destroy it entirely.

Twisted monsters called saja lurk in the shadows of the mountains. Rumors say the Fidelis, human wielders of an ancient elemental magic, again walk the plains. Not all in Avaron believe, and not all welcome the return of legend.

Kura’s a skeptic. But, she’ll cross and befriend centaurs, talking animals, and worse to save her family after the rebellion mistakes her for the land’s prophesied savior. And, while he’d rather negotiate with rebels than fight them, Triston can’t ignore prophecy. That was the sham his father used to steal the crown in the first place.

Over a century ago, their ancestors sailed the oceans in search of peace and died as heroes fighting for it. But heroes—and villains—aren’t always what they seem to be.

Inspired by Brandon Sanderson’s grounded characters and JRR Tolkien’s sense of wonder, Fire of the Forebears is a fantasy for fans who think a dual perspective adventure about the fate of one nation might still be pretty epic.

MY REVIEW

The Dynamic ride or die duo are back for another magic-filled adventure with their intuitive mentor and sidekick Mr Jones as they continue to seek a resolution to destroy The Void and The Tyranny King for good and restore balance to the world. To do that, they need to learn everything they can about their enemy and, more importantly, how to achieve the full potential of The Great Synergy. This time, the boys are seeking out the mythical Camelot, and where better to begin their search than in good ol' England.

It's very rare that I enjoy a sequel as much as or even more than the first book in the series, but that's definitely the case here. When we meet back up with Rome and Julian, they've just left Georgia and are heading to England to find out about the movements of their enemies and hopefully find allies to join their cause in destroying The Void, the realm where the Darkbrand army are coming from to scout Earth for their master, The Tyrant King. In the previous book, the boys sealed one of the portals they were using. As part of a foreign exchange programme, the boys will be staying in Bridgewater, Somerset for the next three months, however, their trip has nothing to do with the exchange programme and Rome suspects someone might have caught onto their plan, but what he doesn't know is if their sneaky stalker is a friend or a foe.

WHAT I LIKED

The banter and bromance between Rome and Julian from the previous book has grown even more in this book. They're moving closer and closer to seeming as brothers rather than friends. There are dangerous matters afoot in this book, and the interaction between Rome and Julian does well in lightening the mood, especially with Julian and his antics. I loved the humour embedded in the story.

I liked the character development, especially with Rome. He's really growing into his role as a Darkbrand slayer, a Defender of the Earth. While Julian's development is slower, it's coming along nicely as we get to understand him a little better by exploring his family background, especially with the addition of a few new characters, one of who happens to be Julian's younger sister, Camela, who comes with her own sidekick and confidant, Krysta. Camela and Krysta are like the female versions of Rome and Julian. They were a great addition to the group as they helped to bring out traits of the boys we either handn't witnessed before or hadn't paid full attention to. The addition of Camela and Krysta highlighted just how difficult a task it will be for the boys to destroy the Darkbrand army, and I don't think the boys had fully grasped the full nature of the task at hand prior to engaging with the girls. There were some great team building moments I appreciated, and while there were back and forth arguments between Julian and Camela, who never seemed to see eye to eye, when push came to shove, they didn't second-guess themselves when it came to supporting each other. The fact that their sibling rivalry didn't interfere with their responsibilities showed just how mature these characters were, or, in Julian's case, how mature they could be.

I loved the action scenes. They were very descriptive, so it was easy to envision the scene as they unfolded. There was a lot of action packed into this book. It didn't seem as though the boys had a moment to rest, so there was definitely no stagnant moments. There was always something happening.

WHAT I DISLIKED

The feud between Julian and Camela felt repetitive at times and sometimes hindered Julian's development as a character. They definitely came across as siblings, but it just seemed as though their feud and them annoying each other was the only thing they had going between them. I would have liked to have seen them share some form of understanding of their similarities outside of their task of saving the world as they both come from a long line of knights who didn't believe in having dragons as allies as the knights of Camelot did, yet they both defied their father's authority. Clearly, they're more alike than they care to acknowledge. It would have been nice if the focus had shifted from their feud to a more familiar and familial conflict surrounding their upbringing and their father's ideologies.

While I did enjoy the fight scenes, they tended to last a little longer than necessary, particularly the fight between the gang and a rather curious member of the faculty that had accompanied them on their trip, which lasted a few chapters. It could have been shorter as the danger and strength of their opponent had been well established long before the battle came to an end.

VERDICT:

Magic, mystery and adventure all rolled up into a spellbinding middle-grade/young adult fantasy story about a young dragon and his knight on a mission to save the world from evil forces. A thoroughly thrilling journey for the whole family.

BOOK REVIEW - Dream Kids: A Novel by Michael Wayne Hampton

Dream Kids: A Novel
Author: Michael Wayne Hampton
Genre: YA Contemporary Fiction / Realistic Fiction / Coming of Age
Publication Date: 22nd March 2022

Book Description:
Out of place at an experimental high school, sensitive high school junior Bryce Hughes steals his father's pharmaceutical sales samples to stay steady and share recreationally with his wealthy, spoiled, nihilistic friends at their wild weekend parties. Hopelessly hung up on his ex-girlfriend, Paige, whose emotions are as fickle as her taste for fashion, Bryce can barely see the quiet scholarship girl, Jaycee, who adores him.

Over the course of a single school year, Bryce and his crew from The Dream Academy have to survive classes they don’t understand, work in the real world, pressure to uphold their school’s public brand, betrayals, and cyberbullying that threatens to push one of their own over the edge.

Each lost Dream Kid must find a way to save their future, their sense of self, and their passions, while fighting to reconcile who they are at heart with who they are believed to be by others.

MY REVIEW

The bold and arresting book cover of Dream Kids just screams rebellion, so, obviously, I had to grab a copy and delve right in. Dream Kids is a book I was rooting for even before turning to the first page. It sought my attention from the get-go, and I was more than happy to oblige. A book about alienation, about characters trying to find acceptance in a world that doesn't seem to acknowledge their presence, Dream Kids follows a group of privileged high school friends as they try to weave through relationships, friendships, identity crisis and their futures.

The story centres around Bryce Hughes and his ragtag crew of misfit friends, who, all but for one member, are spoiled rich kids with no sense of direction or care for anything other than their social status and partying. After being humiliated as a party virgin and being stuck with the nickname Mouse his entire freshman year, Bryce vouched never again to be subjected to such humiliation by his peers. He learned how to fit in and found a group to get him through his school years. The crew attend The Dream Academy, an experimental high school whose curriculum isn't set in stone, thus they never know what to expect or what demands will be thrown their way. Bryce hasn't got a clue what he wants for his future, who he wants to be with or pretty much who he wants to be, for that matter. Rather than actively partaking in how his life progresses, Bryce allows others to make decisions on his behalf, and with his crew not being exactly responsible or rational in nature, the outcome of his endeavours don't necessarily always fall in his favour. He tries pleasing everyone, dealing prescription medication to his peers to satisfy their appetites and remain in their good books. The only positive element in his life is his friendship with Jaycee, who happens to have deep romantic feelings for Bryce, but he's too hung up on his ex, Paige, to give Jaycee the time of day. With the pressure to feel accepted mounting high, Bryce finds himself in a position where he must decide if being what he thinks everyone wants him to be is worth risking the chance for him to be the person he's always dreamt he could be.

WHAT I LIKED

I liked that I felt immersed in the time period of the story. It had a Breakfast Club vibe. Honestly, at times, it felt as though I had been transported into a John Hughes movie in the sense that Hughes had a way of making you feel very present with the characters even though you may be watching a movie that was filmed twenty or so years ago. The style of writing in Dream Kids, the language and the description of the setting all made me feel as though I had been transported into the world of the story, and that made me feel as though I was right there with the characters.

I don't usually jot down lines from books, but I had to in this case. Two lines really stood out for me. The first one was "Maybe the only perfect things are memories". The second line was "People who didn’t know better called us Dream Kids, but we were misfits. We were bad kids, but we were survivors". Sometimes, there were some profound moments in the book that really swept me away.

I think the depiction of the privileged lifestyle of these kids and how they use it to their advantage to avoid taking responsibility for their actions was well portrayed. It felt authentic. Bryce is well aware of the social hierarchy of his world and knows that in order to make it through school he has to pick a side or risk being ostracised. He's fully aware that his friends are bullies and aren't the best role models, hence the reason he keeps Jaycee, the scholarship kid, close by to keep him from spiralling too far. Even Jaycee experiences the pressures of being the poor kid and the need of wanting to be accepted by the popular rich kids, who engage with her because of her friendship with Bryce. In the age of social media, the depiction of peer pressure is ripe in Dream kids, and it does well in portraying the message of how dangerous things can get when the pressure piles on.

The source of the Dream Kids' strength is their wealth. It provides them with the ability to get whatever they want. But it's also the source of their problems, because when people are of the impression that you have everything you need, there's a possibility that they may also be of the impression that there is nothing they can offer you. When Jaycee finds herself in this predicament with Bryce, she realises just how dangerous it can be to be the poor kid among the rich and the popular.

Bryce is a rich kid who lacks the motivation to take charge of his life. I like that he's aware of this. He wants to be better, to do better, to reprimand his friend, Tyler, for being a bully, but he's afraid to take the leap because he doesn't know another way of being accepted. He's terrified of the idea of being an outcast. He's never been able to think for himself, to choose for himself. It's an alien concept. With Jaycee, there's a chance of him breaking free and surviving. The problem is he's not so sure the bond between them is strong enough to overcome adversities.

WHAT I DISLIKED

As much as I liked Bryce and Jaycee and their stories, I felt as though the book focused so much on their possible romance (will they, won't they scenario) that it made the story feel sluggish at times. It felt repetitive.  There are moments where the story drags and nothing happens in the way of progression. I was looking forward to being taken on a journey - a rollercoaster ride of sorts - however, the ambience of the story didn't change much from start to finish. I was looking for variations from the characters and more conflict, or just something that made Bryce feel more active instead of feeling as though he was just lingering on the sidelines, waiting for something to happen.

Some of the characters were underdeveloped, which rendered them as nothing more than clichés. I couldn't understand Bryce's obsession with Paige. She despised him for most of the book. They barely interacted, and when they did it was with derision, on her part. There were no selling points to her character that could explain Bryce's obsession, so I wasn't truly convinced about his feelings towards her. Yes, she's his ex, so there is a connection there, but is that all there is to it? He wants to be with her because he was with her before? It's just familiarity? Paige's portrayal as a rich, self-obsessed person of a fickle disposition didn't justify Bryce's fixation.

Where were the other versions of rich kids? I understand that the rich kids were horrid because they could do whatever they wanted and get away with it, but it would have been nice to witness a counterbalance so as to add variation as it just appeared that all rich kids were simply degenerates without a cause. There were indications that these rich kids weren't as happy with their lives as they wanted people to think, but as we don't get to see them in their habitats (outside the parties), we're not able to empathise or sympathise with their situations, except in the case of Bryce and Jaycee.

Given these kids were part of Bryce's crew, it would have been nice to have a more developed set of the characters to work with, so the portrayal of them wasn't so one dimensional.

The climax wasn't as climactic as I had hope it would be. I liked the outcome, I just didn't feel as excited as I had anticipated to feel. I don't think the risk was big enough. It didn't feel as though Bryce had much to lose. It felt as though no matter what the outcome, he would be okay either way. There was a slight change in his character from start to finish. He was certainly more outspoken by the end, but it just didn't feel as though he had shifted from where he started. I feel Bryce didn't quite reach the summit in his journey, and I feel it's because that summit had yet to be established. Bryce was balancing on the edge of an uncompromising reality, and while it might appear as though he took the plunge in the end, I wasn't convinced that he did take the plunge. The reality he sought was obscure.

VERDICT

Overall, I enjoyed Dream Kids. There were some profound moments, however, the story dragged too much and deliberated a little too long on Bryce's obsession and indecisions for my liking. Having said that, I think the writer's ability to draw you into the world of the story will win readers over. I definitely think it's worth a read.

(Wilder Adventures, #3)
Author: Serena Bell
Publication Date: February 15th, 2022
Genre: Adult Comedy / Contemporary, Romance

Book Description:
Who knew pretending could be so hot?

It started as a joke. After all, I’d never pretend to date a woman just to get my mom and sister off my back.

I would, however, pretend to date her to get her ex-husband off hers.

Now the two of us, the wilderness warrior and the wedding planner, are stuck sharing a very small tent. I had no idea how fast things would heat up in here, or how hard it would be to keep my hands—among other things—to myself.

I also didn’t guess how quickly the news of our “relationship” would spread to my big, nosy family.

We can’t “break up” yet, because she’s planning my brother’s wedding and I’m his best man. Through venue visits, DIY disasters, and Vegas trips, we’re thrown together, and the chemistry’s off-the-charts. But the kicker is, I feel like she gets me.

Maybe that’s what scares me the most. I’m still reeling from the loss of my wife, and she’s still hurting from her ex’s betrayal. There’s no way this can ever be real.

But what if I’m starting to hope it is?

MY REVIEW

The MazeBright of Horsebridge, Scotland, are indeed an interesting family with a long history seeped in magic and mystery. Everything about this family is certainly not what it seems. Told through various POVs, Birthright takes readers on a journey through time from when the MazeBright first arrived on earth from the Meridian Galaxy in the 15th Century up to the present timeline in the 21st Century where we meet our main protagonist, Skyler MazeBright. The arrival of Skyler's family activated the Divine Decree that foretells the prophesy of a young girl of two galaxies destined to destroy the Tree of Death and bring peace back to the Meridian Galaxy. That young girl is none other than Skyler MazeBright.

Although she grew up a human, Skyler has always known that she was a witch. She thought she knew everything about herself when in fact she actually knew nothing about who she is, who her family really is and what the destiny that awaits her. Raised by three guardians, one of whom is the mysterious Callen, known to Skyler as Uncle Callen, Skyler grew up unaware of the true identity and history of her family. What she thought she knew of her parents completely dismantles after their disappearance and upon the discovery of a letter from her mother, she discovers a startling revelation, foretelling what would become of her on her 20th birthday. This sets Skyler on a journey of discovery. Has her parents lied to her her entire life? With dark forces set to destroy her, can she truly trust anyone? Will she be able to fulfil her destiny?

This book is seeped in heraldic history, which was a joy to explore. It featured an interesting cast of characters and had an intriguing storyline. I don't know if it's because I'm British why the story resonated with me, but something about it felt familiar and real. There were some things I had trouble with such as the blend of dialogue from two different characters in the same paragraph. It made things a little confusing at times. I liked the journal format. I haven't read many books in journal format, but I'm always a fan of it. The only issue I had with it is that it contributed to the story being told to me for a large portion of the book as opposed to being shown. Still, it didn't take away from the message of the story nor did it interfere with the transition and flow of the plot.

This was a fun read about a family of witches and vampires trying to overcome evil forces from a galaxy far away. For fans of paranormal historical romance.

MY REVIEW

Steven is a smart kid who wants nothing more than his own dog. Knowing the level of responsibility caring for a dog takes, his parents give some good thought to it. In the end, they are won over by all the research Steven did on what it means to take care of a dog. Steven's new best-friend, Stuart, proves to be a lot more special than Steven was expecting, and the two become such great friends that one can't imagine life without the other.

These adventure stories about Steven and Stuart were very cute. While it portrayed the joys of having a pet dog more than it did the responsibility of taking care of a dog, I found it to be quite a fun adventure. I was a little surprised by Stuart's gift. I was not expecting that, but it just goes to show that the bond between Steven and Stuart was extraordinary and special.

There was a scene at school where it mentions Stuart was excited because he hadn't met any other animals before, but I recall Steven and Stuart happening upon a rabbit on their first outing, so that was a little confusing. Despite this little mishap, I found this quick read to be a joy.

A good read for the whole family.
