Publisher: Mythology Press
Soft Cover: ISBN: ‎ 978-1732568808; 598 pages; $21.99; E-Book, $.99; Audiobook, FREE.

Book Description:
It’s 2090: the last outpost of freedom is the moon, the best defense against technology is magic, and the only hope for humankind rests in the hands of the Star Children.

Twins Cassidy and Torr must save Earth from a ruthless enemy at a time when the only force more powerful than alien technology is magic. Moon Deeds launches the siblings’ journey across the galaxy, where they must learn their power as the Star Children, claim their shamanic heritage, and battle dark forces that threaten humankind.

The Star Children Saga follows Cassidy and Torr as they slowly awaken to their destiny as the twin Star Children, born every millennium to reconnect with the source of all life. They come to discover the sheer enormity of their task: to find our ancestors on a lost planet across the galaxy and save humanity from a spiraling descent into darkness. The powers they must wield to accomplish this task are truly frightening and put at risk everything they love.

Come along with twenty-year-old twins Cassidy and Torr, who inherited deeds to land parcels on the moon. They want to use their moon deeds to get off Earth and escape a brutal dictatorship. But first they must unlock their shaman powers.

A rollicking yet poignant adventure in the not too distant future, when we have colonized the moon and nearly lost Earth to a dictatorship. Only the shamans remain free, plus the lucky ones who escaped to the moon.

Join the adventure! An addictive space opera, science-fantasy series.
“This is a marvelous book. The characters are compelling, complex, and emotional. The future described is neither all evil nor all good, and it’s described so realistically that I can still feel the moon dust in my nose and expect to see large packing containers around every corner. The text is delightfully written with none of the bad grammar that makes picky people like me wince even in an otherwise great story. Alas, this is just the first book of the series, and it appears I’ll have to wait a whole year for the next one. I really need to know *now* what happens next!” – Garden Reader

“I was totally captivated by this story. It is set just far enough into our future that I could see it all unfold. This tale has it all, mystery, magic, aliens, war, family, friendship and love. The authors ability to paint landscapes with words is amazing! I can not wait for book two to come out. I must know the fate of the Star Children!” – VR

“Anything dealing with the moon is almost immediately mystical and magical. Throw in a heart racing adventure and characters that will leave a mark on your heart and you have a masterpiece!” – Taylor Johnson (Educator, Netgalley)

“I found this novel to be as much a psychological thriller as it is a science fiction adventure, and the draw-in happens almost instantly. This is unquestionably one of the best books I’ve read this year and Pickering has roped in an entire family as new fans. I’d give Moon Deeds a whole bucket of stars if I could.” – Asher Syed (Readers’ Favorite)

“There is so much to love about this book, from its complex and intricately woven plot filled with tension, strife, and discovery, to the personal attachment you begin to build with the characters due to finely executed character building, engaging personalities, and difficulties in both moral dilemmas and situations. The pace is perfect to build tension, and I loved the length of this book.” – K.J. Simmill (Readers’ Favorite)

“10 Things You Might Not Know About MOON DEEDS”

1. The Moon Deeds story starts on Earth in the year 2090.

2. The two protagonists are 20-year-old twins, Cassidy and Torr. Cassidy is studying plant-spirit medicine, and Torr is a soldier (and a lucid dreamer).

3. Their mother is a shaman. Currently, she practices plant-spirit medicine. Their father is a trader and merchant and has a special connection to animals.

4. Cassidy and Torr inherited deeds to land parcels on the moon that they inherited from their Great-Aunt Sophie. There is a strange connection between Great-Aunt Sophie and the President of the World Government (Global Alliance), but it is not clear what that connection is.

5. Prior to the start of the Moon Deeds adventure, on January 2, 2038, a strange-looking craft showed up on the landing field of Rothera Station spaceport in Antarctica. The landing party were humanoid, not so different from Earthlanders. They had a working knowledge of the Globalish language, and it had taken them some effort to prove they were from another planet—Thunder Walker, which orbits Errai in the Cepheus constellation. At that time, Antarctica was a neutral zone. Representatives from each country were sent there to meet with the aliens, who turned out to be diplomats and scientists. Several more Cephean craft arrived in Antarctica over the course of two years.

6. By 2090, the Cephs are backing a world army on Earth and are supplying it with advanced weaponry.

7. The only thing able to defend against the alien technology is magic.

8. At this point in time, the moon has been colonized. There are two interstellar spaceports, and the colonies have the ability to supply their own oxygen and water by mining moon soil and lunar ice. The colonies are still dependent on Earth for food and other critical goods such as medicines.

9. The third POV character, Ridge, is an inventor and runs one of the interstellar spaceports and the largest mine on the moon.

10. Palmer Pickering’s inspiration for Moon Deeds was a gag gift from her brother of a deed to a land parcel on the moon. It professes to be legit, and therefore Palmer may indeed own land on the moon.

Chapter 2 - Miramar

San Diego California, Western Free States, planet Earth

July 9, 2090

Something was not right with the air. There was a crackling that Torr could only sense when he stopped breathing. An intermittent wave of whispering, skin-tingling static. He lay on the platform inside the shadows of the cement bunker and stared through his rifle scope at the Shaman’s Shield. For three years the cloud barrier had stood between the Western Free States and the Tegs. Torr had joined the Gaia United rebels at the southern border two years ago, facing the massive wall every day. It soared up into the sky as though it were a towering marble cliff or a plunging waterfall, five miles high, stretching east to west far as the eye could see, shimmering like water but solid as stone. As far as anyone could tell, it was a cumulonimbus cloud made of ash from the volcanic mountains, held together by an unknown shamanic magic. The scientists called it an electromagnetic force field, of a sort no one had ever seen before. At its peak, the wall curved overhead, sealing them in from above in a thick cloud cover. But today the southern wall had receded from its normal position, exposing flat desert scrubland and skeletal bushes coated in ash. Since dawn, dark, vertical shadows had appeared at the base of the wall, as though some giant creature had attacked it overnight with long, jagged claws.

Torr crawled forward and poked his head out through the open front of the bunker half-buried in the hillside, and peered up at the sky. The cloud barrier overhead still appeared intact; the sky was gray and gloomy as ever, though it smelled like a storm was brewing. He pulled himself back inside and settled down behind his gun, tightening its bipod and adjusting the sand bag under the butt of the rifle. He inhaled deeply, held in his breath for three seconds, then exhaled and held it out for three seconds, hoping the breathing exercise would stop his cheek from twitching. It hadn’t bothered him in months—now his left cheek was spasming non-stop. He could not shoot with it jittering like that.

Inhale one two three. Exhale one two three.

He glanced over his right shoulder at Reina, propped up on her elbows on the plywood platform between him and the cement wall. She was staring through her spotting scope. Her TAFT stood on its bipod next to her, loaded and ready to mow down Tegs should they come streaming across the plain. Torr wanted to die before she did; he didn’t think he could bear to watch her suffer, or see her dead eyes staring up at him. It was a selfish thing to wish, but he wished it anyway. Bobby, on the other hand, lying on the platform to his left—two hundred pounds of solid muscle—he wouldn’t mind dying before Bobby. Torr would lean into him as he died, and Bobby would tell him everything was going to be all right, even though they both knew it wasn’t.

Genre: NA Comedy / Contemporary Romance

Book Description:
All’s fair in love and war.
With Randi and Buck, it’s hard to tell the two apart…

An uptight, self-contained college girl, Randi Becker just needed one thing: a room. Somewhere she could study, and keep away from the things that most confuse and frighten her: people.

Unfortunately, the “nice quiet place” she reserved turns out to be a room in the campus’ most raucous house. A place seemingly designed to make studying impossible, made even worse by the other girls’ non-stop drama.

But then Buck, a fun-loving cowboy whom all the ladies love, shows up…and everything gets much worse.

Buck seems to have it all: friends, fun, and a never-ending line of admirers. But what he most desires is a break. So when Buck spots Randi, he figures she’s a perfect decoy: he can play up a “crush” on her that will take him off the market; buy him some breathing room. And if he can tease her a bit, and get under the skin of the uptight busybody? Well, that’s just gravy.

But Buck is about to find more than he bargained for. Randi’s strong-willed, opinionated, difficult—and maybe just what he needs. And Buck isn’t alone. Soon Randi wonders as well…if the world she wanted is really the world she needs. If her future is nothing more than a diploma on the wall. And if the most important thing in her world isn’t a grade, but the cowboy who’s planted his boots firmly in her heart.

BOOK REVIEW: A Lover's Will by Mahiraj Jadeja

A Lover's Will
Author: Mahiraj Jadeja
Genre: Poetry
Publication Date: 26th May 2016

Book Description:
Poet Mahiraj Jadeja has a new collection of 50 poems entitled A Lover's Will. The work covers all aspects of love, from the first questioning 'What is Love' through poems praising women and lovers to unrequited love. The interaction of lovers who are past the first flush of love, are comfortable in each others company and have an instinctive almost telepathic understanding of each other is explored in 'As Expected'. In the poem 'Suicide', the tragedy of a love across a religious divide is sensitively explored. 'Roles of a Lady' shows the three types of love in a woman's life and 'A Mother's Wish' speaks of the one love a dying woman is yearning for.

SUMMARY

An anthology of narrative poetry about the varying concepts of love.

MY REVIEW

As a lover of poetry, and since it's been a while since I read some poetry, I was looking forward to delving into this anthology. In all honesty, I didn't enjoy the anthology as much I thought I would, however, there were a few poems that stuck for me as they generated a reaction that was satisfying and that put a smile on my face. I especially liked the following: My Reflection, Freedom of Love, Angel of Death Cum Love, Soul Sister and Hope.

I didn't like that the tone and general ambience was monotone throughout. I wanted a flux of emotions, but I didn't get that. Given that love has many forms of expressions, I was hoping for varying emotions, but the tone was unchanging.

While the anthology didn't excite me as much as I had hoped, it was still a nice collection. I would have liked to have connected with it more on an emotional level, but I appreciated the exploration into the varying decrees of love, albeit the monotone vibe.

Book Blitz & Giveaway - Smart Girls Don’t Love Aliens! by Alina Jacobs

Smart Girls Don’t Kiss Aliens!
Author: Alina Jacobs
Publication Date: May 31st, 2022
Genre: Adult Comedy / Paranormal Romance

Book Description:
Crash-land on an alien barbarian planet and told there’s no way home?

LMAO! I’m a rocket scientist. Miss me with that noise.

Anyone else might have a nervous breakdown, but I was abducted with my besties. Among us, we have fifteen PhDs.

We will be getting off this planet. Trust.

No, I will not be finding an eternal bonded mate among the seven-foot-tall alien males.

No, I will not be wearing a furkini and walking around barefoot.

And no, I will not be moving into a cave with no internet or running water and accepting my fate like the rest of the freed human women on this craft-cocktail-forsaken planet.

Two liquid hydrogen rockets and a smidge of deep-space travel later, and we’re back home on Earth.

Except that our spaceship had stowaways.

Now there’s a seven-foot-tall alien named Cassius in my Los Angeles condo. He’s explaining calmly that according to the ancestors, we are supposed to be eternally mated, he’s bonded to me, and we’re going to have a litter of children. Also, he’s wearing a loincloth. And he has horns.

Wipe that smirk off your face. No, it is not as sexy as it sounds.

He barked at my cat. He harassed my busybody Karen neighbor (actually, I’m okay with that one). He’s obsessed with the ice maker on my fridge.

What’s a smart girl to do?

The smart thing is to build a rocket ship and send Cassius and his other hot alien friends back to their home planet.

The not-smart thing to do is fall into those deep blue-gray eyes and let him show me just how good that forked tongue feels.

And the downright stupid thing to do is fall in love with an alien.

This is a stand-alone, full-length, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy, complete with bad space puns, hot guys with horns, and enough steam to cause a supernova. Happily ever after guaranteed!

Author Interview

1. What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I think when my son started reading, I realized I wanted to be part of that. I felt I wanted to give back to younger readers to inspire them the way the books I read when I was young inspired me. The other time I realized I wanted to write came in a completely different form. I’ve told this story a bunch of times. And it’s completely true. I used to write short stories and poetry and music, but I never did any big projects. At one point, my mother dared me to write a book off a premise we brainstormed together, and I just went with it. Before I knew it, I had the first book done and since it ended on a cliffhanger, we were like, “What’s next?”. I realized that I liked writing so much that I just kept on going. Now, I’m sitting on 4 self-published books and 7 more waiting in the wings (get it?)

2. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I’d love to say it was winning the awards I’ve won, but that’s just not true. It’s the reactions from younger readers who read my series and just love the books. Whether or not I hear from parents about the kids theorizing about how the they can’t wait for the next installment to come out or just listening to my son and kids his age theorize about how the plot and characters will develop in the future. I would say inspiring young readers to enjoy my books, but also write their own is the most rewarding part of being published.

3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
My favorite book of all time is “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, so to have a Hunter S. Thompson signed copy of that would be mondo radical. Um, but I would also entertain “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis or “A Spell For Chameleon” by Piers Anthony as they were HUGE influences in my younger reading life.

4. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
In the realm of fiction, I would say that invulnerability is the most broken superpower, so I would need to steer clear of that. Especially if you have an evil despot in a position of authority that is invulnerable, that makes defeating them nigh impossible. If I had to pick a superpower from my series, The Talisman Series, I would pick something like Mr. Jones’s spell Transportation Incantation that basically allows him to teleport groups of people anywhere he wants. I even had to set some limitations on it because I was like, “That’s not really fair! What’s to stop him from using this for nefarious purposes.” I guess we should be happy Mr. Jones is on OUR side! And, of course I would NEVER use it for personal gain (wink, wink).

5. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
I write for kids like my own and tell stories meant to entertain, so check out my books if you like action, dragons, and zany characters.

6. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I do have the humblest beginnings of a second series in the works. I have the plot of the first book and the “Legendarium” already put to paper (or hardrive). That series will be a work of portal fiction mixed with destiny fiction and entail more adult themes as compared to The Talisman Series.  Trying to make it a pure YA series instead of the more MG adventures of Rome and Julian.  I can give you a little taste of my plans for that one here:

Seven young humans from the planet Earth are sought and transported to an alternate dimension where technology does not exist. The realm is called ??? and the most powerful beings there are a race of tyrannical warlords. There are seven of them, and they each run a specific kingdom on separate islands/continents of the planet. There is a resistance living on the planet consisting of a small group of rebels who want to realize a prophecy by gathering the seven Earthlings who are destined to change the world and fix the oppression demonstrated by the dictatorial warlords.

As with The Talisman Series, there will be a heavy emphasis on mythology, colors, names, and elements. As well as some video game RPG fundamentals like summoning, weapons, and certain aspects of magic. I’m really excited to get a rough draft of book 1 or at least a solid foundation. I plan to get into that tasty experiment later this year, after I finish the initial rendering of book 11 for The Talisman Series.

7. Do you write as you go or do you have the book planned before you start the first draft?
Oh, I absolutely write as I go. It’s a crazy ride too! I had no idea how far I would go with this. I am currently working on the finishing rough draft for book 11. Mostly, I wrote the first 3 books flying by the seat of my pants, but after that, I developed a clear plot and resolution for books 4-6. Then, after the pandemic, I settled in and got a long, intricate story for the next 6 books which I will release as the years go on. And I gotta say, I feel like each entry in the series is full of better story telling and more interesting characters.

8. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I am a huge MCU nerd. I grew up reading comic book along with all the fantasy and science fiction I read. So, now that we live in the Golden Age of being a comics nerd, I am absolutely in heaven!

9. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
If I HAD to move from where I live now, I would live on Loch Ness so I could see about getting a view of Nessie!  LOL

10. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Oh man! For sure in Rome and Julian!  So, this can all be learned on the Fandom.com wiki I created (link below). In the beginning, I based my characters off me. Just me. I’ve known myself for a long time, and it was a small cast, so it was easy. I made Rome and Julian to represent the two different sides of my personality. Rome represents the levelheaded and introspective portion of me that wants to do the right thing, but rarely jumps at the chance to be a leader. Despite his uneasiness about assuming a leadership role, he always has the best interests of his friends and family in mind. Rome’s internal dialogue and hesitant decision making reflect how I feel about myself specifically during my teenage years. Julian, on the other hand, is brash and braggadocios. Not to mention loud, and most times, his mouth operates without properly consulting his brain first. These characteristics are also like me.  Even the idea of him rebelling against his family ideals is indicative of my own brazen and defiant nature during my teenage years. He also uses informal language with everyone other than his father to emphasize the fact that he tries to be “cool” with a “devil-may-care” attitude. Whereas Rome is more the internal example of how I felt as a teen, Julian more closely resembles my physical appearance during those years. Finally, the spatial linking that the two share as Synergist Knight and Master Dragon is a metaphor for how my two personalities differ and interact inside my head. LOL. Seems funny to really say it out loud, but the idea of splitting the sides of my personality into two characters was an idea I wanted to explore since the earliest days of my writing.

Character Interview

1. Julian, quick, describe yourself in seven words or less!
Megalithic, hypersonic, unrivaled, undefeatable Darkbrand slayer….dude!

2. Tell us something about your current hometown.
It’s soooo boring here. Like, painfully boring. It’s a small town feel with even less to do with your free time. It should really tell you something about my hometown when I found myself hanging out at the local library for entertainment, right?

3. What's the strangest thing that has ever happened to you?
Haha! You wanna talk about strange?  How about going face to face with a giant, red-furred Minotaur that exploded into another dimension? Or how about traipsing across The Gobi Desert to find a long-lost fire Talisman? Or being dragged thousands of feet under the ocean to meet water dragon royalty?  Take your pick, dude.

4. What's your favorite food?
Pizza, no doubt. Pizza with extra cheese and tons of pepperoni!

5. Can you tell us a little about what to expect in The Talisman Series?
Only the most epic, action-packed, rib-tickling adventures your eyes will EVER have the privilege of viewing! Seriously, the books are fun and full of humor and cinematic action.

6. Can you tell us something about yourself we don't learn from the book or series?
Where do I start? I’ve seen over 200 movies. I have an autographed picture of Stan Lee. I can juggle all kinds of fruit. I’ve beaten The Legend of Zelda like 6 times. I have perfect pitch but ONLY in the shower. In a room, I always have to sit facing the door. I don’t trust snails or slugs. I’ve memorized the entire Weezer blue album and once performed it a capela at the middle school talent show. I invented “Rick-rolling”. I don’t drink coffee, but I love the smell. My hero is Monty Oum. I sleep with only one sock and with my feet out from under the covers. I can never spell the word “seperate” correctly….see? I don’t eat the crust on my sandwiches. My favorite dinosaur is the velociraptor. Favorite Pokémon is Charizard.  I can hold my breath for 47 seconds. I have a collection of spores under my bed that I use for the science fair every year. I once drank an entire 2-liter of Coke in one sitting. I can fit my entire fist in my mouth. I don’t have any…

7. What is your author Brett Salter like?
Yeah, he’s cool. A bit of a nerd though. But he loves his family and his passion for creativity and writing makes him a great host to dictate my life on the written page. (Pauses, considering) Yeah, I don’t think I would ask for anyone else to be my creator.  Unless The Rock is available?

8. Name five items in your purse or pockets right now.
Uuuuum. (digging into pockets of sweat pants)  Let’s see here…We got a key to my house, a chewed piece of Bubble Yum squished into a napkin, 37 cents in change (mostly pennies), a fake spider, and, of course, Pandora’s Die of Hope. I never leave home without it.

9. What was your first impression of Rome?
I thought he seemed cool. I kinda wanted to be like him. Friendly and honest and a hard worker. A good combination. Kinda like he is now. He’s a perfect leader. Simple and forthright. And he’s so humble that he doesn’t even know how good he is at it. The truth is, we would follow him anywhere if it meant protecting the ones we love. And that is Rome in a nutshell. Courage personified.

10. If you had one chance to change anything about your life, what would it be?
Well, The Great Synergy gave me a brother. And Mr. Jones trained me to be the most famous Darkbrand slayer the world’s ever seen. So, I guess I just wish I could have a never-ending supply of tacos!

About the Author
My background in writing stems mostly from the inspiration I found as a kid when I read Fantasy and Sci-Fi books. These include The Chronicles of Narnia, The Xanth Novels, The Time Quintet, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, and everything from Shakespeare to Dr. Seuss. In my formative years, I joined several punk rock bands and wrote songs, poetry, and short stories aplenty. As an adult (?) I took on a dare and wrote the first book in my Talisman Series. I loved the feeling it gave me and the idea of inspiring others so much that I kept writing until I had an entire series.

I am currently working to finish The Talisman Series. I have self-published 4 of the books which can be found on Amazon. At this very moment, I am on book 11 of the 12 I have planned.

Genre: Adult Historical Romance / Time-Travel / Women’s Fiction

Book Description:
When you wake up in Bath, England two hundred years in the past, how far can a love of Jane Austen get you?

Janet Roberts dreams of an academic career in literature, so she can hardly believe her good fortune when she’s accepted into a Jane Austen graduate seminar in Bath, England. Settled in Georgian splendor among her seminar colleagues, Janet and her classmates live, eat and breathe Jane Austen.

An accident interrupts this idyll when Janet regains consciousness in her own room—back in Regency England. For a scholar of nineteenth-century literature, this should be a dream come true.

But Janet quickly learns there’s a world of difference between scholarly knowledge of the written page and maneuvering real life as a reluctant time traveler.

Her burgeoning friendship with Emma Huntington eases her entrée into nineteenth-century society. However, Emma’s brother, the handsome, proud and frustratingly magnetic Sir Edward, is far less welcoming.

While desperately attempting to make sense of her dilemma, Janet treads a thin line between trying to blend into her new world and not being unmasked as the imposter she is. Can she discover the way to return to her twenty-first century life? After working so hard to create a rewarding nineteenth-century life for herself and opening her hart to friendship and love, does she even want to?
