Chapter 13

For five long minutes, only the rustle of papers as our principal signed each one with a single flourish of her wrist, filled the room. I had an incredible urge to wipe the sweat off my neck. Her refusal to even acknowledge our presence in the room was draining whatever little strength I had left in my body.

“Hand me your badge and leave the room, Jai,” she said sternly.

I looked with my mouth agape from her to Jai. His jaw, which I had admired just a moment ago, was clenched tight, but other than that slight detail, there was calmness about him that I couldn’t identify. I saw him meticulously unpin the badge, step forward to the desk in one sure movement, and place it in front of the principal.

Barely glancing at the badge or at Jai, she looked right at me. I was shaken to see not a speck of affection that usually resided in the depth of her eyes. She leant back in her chair and formed a steeple with her slender fingers. Those very hands had held me as a baby. She appraised me with those eyes that had soothed me and sometimes chided me whenever I had landed in trouble. But they had never looked at me with judgement. For my parents’ sake, I hoped the lack of food in my stomach was pushing me to misread signals.

“You may leave the room,” she said, her voice straining as she tried not to shout.

Her eyes never left mine, but we all knew who the statement was addressed to. Jai did move, but only to stand straighter with his legs apart and hands clasped behind his back. I resisted the urge to whip my head around to look at this alien trying to wage war with an authoritarian on her domain. She had a lion’s ferocity running in her blood. Unlike her father, it was not in her nature to let it dictate her behavior towards the students. I shuddered involuntarily, my gaze flicking to the portrait above her head.

“Pardon me ma’am. I would like to stay here with Div...Divya. It is because of me that we both are here.” Jai’s voice sounded firm, all the flirtatiousness of earlier gone from his tone.

My mouth hung open as I finally turned to look at Jai. He was freaking mad to even speak when she looked like a hungry lioness on a prowl.

“Is that right?” I swung my head to face her. “Divya, why do you think you are here?”

I tensed. I knew it. This was not going to be easy to explain. I might have taken a little too long to reply because I heard her make a sound of impatience before saying, “Was it because of the scuffle with Mr. Solanki?”

“No, ma’am.” I was amazed I found my voice. “It was because of the almost scuffle with Ritwik,” I deadpanned, stupidly.

My palms itched to connect roughly with my own forehead. It had to wait. The way this was going, I would have to do that more than once.

“Almost scuffle?” she would have snorted if she weren’t addressing me as the principal on a matter of discipline. “You threatened to punch the poor boy’s nose…again.”

My eyes rounded at her image of Ritwik. He did not look poor in any way. He was a bloody rascal out for revenge.

“I never punched Ritwik, that was Ritwik’s twin, Hardhik. It was three years ago. And I did not threaten, I just punched him,” I said meekly, but failed miserably in masking the pride in my voice.

Her steeple was gone, and she had moved forward in her seat. That was not a good sign. I sighed within.

You should know when to shut up, Div___Algo popped into my head.

“Not helping at all, Mary Poppin’,” I silently growled at the voice in my head.

“I had war_” Princi stopped suddenly and looked at Jai, who stood keenly watching the exchange.

“Mr. Solanki, I dismissed you a while ago. Do you want me to physically throw you out?”

“Yes ma’am! No ma’am!” Suddenly alert, he first nodded then shook his head. I waited for him to salute too. The fool!

He is cute. He is standing up for you__Algo opined, out of turn.

“He is getting shot for me, the fool,” I stressed.

Yes. Cute! Name one guy who would do that for you?

Aryan! The name just popped into my head very much like Algo did a moment ago. I flushed. Warm as the thought was, I did not need anyone fighting my battles.

Blog Tour Spotlight & Giveaway - Life in the Palace by Catherine Green

Life in the palace tour

Life in the Palace
Life in the Palace
by Catherine Green

“We need to talk,” Tal said. Then I knew it was going to go badly. ‘We need to talk’ is the conversational equivalent of walking into your basement without turning on the light, on a dark and stormy night, when a known psychopath is on the loose. You might as well cut to the chase and slit your own throat.

Chloe Diaz assumed three things: that when Tal said that she was one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance, it was code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo;’ that the gorgeous Seth Wilks would never be her soul mate and that she’d never have to choose between them. Chloe was wrong.

Now the future of the world is in her hands, but what if price is too great to pay?

This is a brief description of the plot:

After a lifetime in the shadow of her sister, Chloe is severely phobic of the chronically cool. Seth is everything she avoids; a pre-med philosophy major who works in a bar, plays in a band and is so good looking that grown women stare at him in the street. But it’s hard to say no to your soul mate. Thinking she’s maxed out her supply of destiny, Chloe settles down to enjoy the happily-ever-after.

Tal says that she’s one of The People sent from heaven to maintain the cosmic balance. Chloe assumes this is code for ‘I’m a pamphlet distributing, incense burning, religious weirdo.’ Actually Tal’s main extracurricular activity is fighting the forces of Oblivion. The People never need to hide what they are because no one ever believes them. Until Chloe does.

Chloe sets out to help Tal and The People as much as she can as an outsider. Seth says as long as no one wears their underpants on the outside Chloe can do what she likes. What he doesn’t say is that he’s also one of The People, although non-practicing. But as the Final Battle draws nearer, Chloe realizes it’s time for Seth to go collect his regulation sword. The only thing standing in his way is her. Seth says he’ll give up his place in heaven to stay with her. Chloe must choose between Seth’s soul and her own happiness.

Praise for Life in the Palace

An interesting take on the paranormal romance genre. …..While other books in the genre have unrealistic buy in to the acceptance of someone from the outside entering a "new world" Life in the Palace handled it from both the main character looking in and the dwellers of the Palace looking out at this person trying to enter their world. …….I am so happy to hear that there are more books in the series! – Yonit on Goodreads

I loved this world that Catherine Green created. I happily lost myself in the life & deep love between Chloe & Seth …..I loved the attention to detail, the fleshing out of the world around them, the obvious growth of all the characters... Even the heartbreaking choices made at the end. Book two I cannot wait to read! – Ebon Darkmyth on Smashwords

Loved it, great story line, fun characters and after reading it and thinking deeply about the duality of our lives, it made my prayers come alive! – Rebecca Wittenstein on Amazon.com

This book introduces you to a whole host of characters that you want to meet in real life. ….The action keeps you reading, while the budding love between Seth and Chloe makes you breathless. A great read. – Cypora Cohen on Amazon.co.uk

Excerpt from Life in the Palace

Chloe arrives unexpectedly at Tal’s house on the Day of Connection (Chapter 8):

Mrs. Perr stood to see me out, “It was so nice to meet you Chloe. Feel free to stop by again.”Her voice was warm, but I was sure she didn’t mean it.

“Thank you so much for the hospitality. You really saved my life on the bathroom front.” We were just making our way towards the front door when it opened and through it walked a group of men all wearing suits.

We all froze.

“You’re home early,” Mrs. Perr said brightly.

“A lot of people are on vacation so things moved more quickly,” one of the men explained.

“Who’s this?” a youngish guy asked. He might have been the brother-in-law.

“This is Chloe, Tal’s study partner. She just stopped by for few minutes.”

I would have smiled and made my way towards the door if it wasn’t for the fact that I had lost all control over my body. I just stood there and stared. I didn’t even care if by now they thought I was beyond weird.

Behind each of the men was a large shape of fire and light. I couldn’t actually see them. It was more like my mind told me they were there, without bothering to bypass my eyes. Part of my mind was telling me it wasn’t true, while the other part was just staring at these huge figures radiating splendor. It would be an understatement to say I’d never seen anything like it. I’d never imagined anything like it. I’m not sure if Steven Spielberg has ever imagined anything like it.

Tal was introducing me to her brother and acting like everything was normal. I don’t even think I said hello to him. When I did speak I couldn’t even remember to fake politeness.

“What is that?” I didn’t even blink. I just stood and stared. I might have been in shock.

Tal looked shifty, “That’s my Dad.”

“What’s the problem?” One of Tal’s friends asked the other.

“I think it’s because he’s wearing a hat,” the other replied.

“Who cares about the hat?” The panic was apparent in my voice. I still didn’t take my eyes off them. “Behind him,” I croaked, “Can’t you see them?”

The whole room froze.

“See who?” Tal’s mother asked casually. She’s a good actor, only her eyes betrayed her.

Tal was less cool, “What’s there to see?”

Sweat was pouring down my back, I was about to totally lose my cool. “The giant creatures of light and fire standing behind him.”

“Ahhh, behind all of you!” I leapt back. I wrapped my arms around myself so they wouldn’t see how my hands were shaking. Now even Mrs. Perr was having trouble playing it cool. We all just looked at each other for five horrible seconds.

“It’s the angels,” a voice piped up. Tal’s little niece smiled brightly while her mother clearly considered infanticide.

“The angels?” I wasn’t sure the voice was my own.

A vein on Tal’s left temple was throbbing. “I did tell you,” she said very quickly. “Angels come to our house on the weekend.”

“You didn’t tell me it was fucking TRUE!!” I exploded.

Then clamped one hand to my mouth as I realized I’d just sworn in front of a bunch of religious people and a swarm of angels. I sank into the sofa behind me. I put my head in my hands, but when I looked up they were still there, radiating eternal light.

“It’s supposed to be a metaphor for spending quality family time together, it’s not supposed to be real,” I said half to myself.

Over my head, I felt an exchange of meaningful looks. Someone reached a decision.

For the first time, Mr. Perr spoke, “It’s all true. There really are angels that come to our house, we really live in the Palace, we really defend the world from Oblivion and Disconnection. We are the Servants of He Who Sees All. It’s real.”

I thought, holy crap.

I said, “Oh.”

Then my brain began to function so I added, “So when Tal said you were part of an eternal battle she actually meant that you were, like, part of an eternal battle?”

Cautiously, Tal nodded.

“All those stories are true?” I asked.

Tal nodded again.

“Anything anyone missed?” I asked more brightly than the moment called for.

The blond friend put up her hand, “There really is a force in side of us that drives us away from the true path.”

“You’re actually possessed?”

“A bit. Somewhat. Maybe,” she floundered.

“We prefer to think of it as being provided with daily challenges to become greater,” explained Mr. Perr. He’s slick. I wondered if he was a motivational speaker or a divorce lawyer.

They seemed to be waiting for me to say something.

“How come you guys don’t tell anyone about all of this?”

“We do,” said Tal.

“They just don’t believe us,” the clean cut guy, who I presumed was her brother, explained.

“The angels aren’t a giveaway?”

“Others, people who are not of our kind, can’t usually see them so we tell the whole truth and they don’t believe us.” The brother looked around for encouragement. The others nodded.

“Why can you see them?” The blond friend asked.

I shrugged, “Gifted?”

They all considered it. There may have been another unseen exchange because Mrs. Perr suddenly smiled brightly and asked, “Would you like to stay for dinner?”

Right then, going home to watch X-files re-runs seemed a little lame, so I stayed.

Blog Tour Spotlight - The Do's and Don't by Haley Rose

The Do's and Don'ts
by Hayley Rose

Genre: Children’s Picture Book
Publisher: Inkwell Productions Inc.
Pages: 46
Language: English
Format: Hardcover

Book Description:
The Do's and Don'ts is a whimsical lesson book aimed at teaching young readers the difference between good and bad behavior/etiquette. In the book Zack and Chloe go from being manner monsters to well-behaved children as they provide samples of typical scenarios that not only young children encounter but can relate to. For example, Zack becomes a Manner Monster when he loses a game, kicking and pouting like a poor sport. In contract, good behavior is then modeled depicting Zack congratulating the winning team. Unlike other etiquette books for children that tell a story or just communicate positive behavior, The Do's and Don'ts compares and contrasts between good and bad behavior. Simply, yet colorfully displayed, are examples of inappropriate behavior and decisions young children may display followed by behavior and decisions that are more socially accepted. Each compare and contrast anecdote is set in the same scene so that young readers can instantly see the differences between good and poor behavior.

Excerpt from Wonderfully Wicked

“I took great effort to see you.” His tone hinted the act made him deserving. “You sleep; I’ll keep watch. And my vow of yesterday stands. I won’t molest you.”

To her annoyance, her pulse danced a country jig. Whatever efforts he took on her behalf were of questionable nature, not romantic. She made a rude noise in case he held any such illusions.

“Keep watch for what? No one besides you could reach my window and my door’s bolted.”

Lydon laced his hands behind his head, his lips twitching as though fighting a smile. “Then I’ll watch you. Like before.”

Horror prickled over her in a rushing tide. She leapt up. “You watched me sleep? Not skulked around in my bedroom to attack me?” She groaned, imagining him watching her drool, snore, or grind her teeth.

He laughed, low and warm. “You’re so lovely when you dream, Lils. An angel.” He patted the empty spot beside him.

Her traitorous body, defenseless against him, obeyed. The red, silken comforter hissed beneath her knees while she climbed onto the opposite side of the giant bed. The lone lamp by the bed cast a mystical glow over Lydon, catching golden highlights in his light hair, the silver shards in his eyes. “Watching people sleep is creepy.”

He shrugged. “Not people, just you. Besides, I am creepy.”

Definitely not creepy. Kalila settled into a cross-legged position and fixed him with a no-nonsense look. “Since it seems you have nothing better to do than lie there like a sloth, be useful and fess up. Why am I being treated as some freaking porcelain doll in a glass case? How can my nightmares benefit the V’alkara? Can the V’alkara really take my dreams away? None of you seem sick—and no, mental doesn’t count—so what’s wrong? And when will you take us home?”

Lydon jiggled one black boot. What she thought might be disapproval flickered in his eyes. “I won’t waste our alone time answering inquiries. I have other plans.”

She swallowed hard. Maybe she’d misjudged him. Maybe he was so confident in his assassin abilities—and her helplessness—he felt sneakiness was unnecessary.

He sat up in a blink of an eye, moving with inhuman speed. One large hand was planted next to her knee. His breath fanned her chin. The scent of the outdoors and a tinge of smoke drifted from his clothes. His voice whispered spider-soft.

“Do you care to know what other less attractive names some call me?” The world seemed to shrink to Lydon and the force of his gaze. “Angel of Ruin. Living Nightmare. Scourge.” His eyes gleamed, darkened. “As you might guess from such monikers, peace in my life is rare. I’ll relish any fragments of it I happen to stumble across for as long as possible.”

His fingers trailed her cheek to cup her chin. In the span of a heartbeat, his face changed. From beautiful man to skeletal beast then back to beautiful man. A chill coiled around her soul, deep and cold as a winter storm. Who—what—was this guy?

“Do you feel it too?”

Kalila’s heartbeat rumbled in her ears, kicked at her throat. Her fingers jerked with a fierce need to touch him. Instead, she fisted the blanket. Admit nothing to the enemy. Yet the urge to nestle her cheek into his palm and purr grappled with reason. She had to take control before she did something stupid.

About the Author
CJ blames her love for reading and all things Medieval on her father, who plied her often with fantasy novels ranging from Sir Lloyd Alexander to Piers Anthony.  Her love for romance, however, lies completely at the feet of her best friend Michelle, who dared to give her a romance novel for her birthday.  She smiled, politely said thank you, and tossed it in the corner, where it gathered dust.  In a moment of desperation, when only the revolting romance remained in her almost-always toppling stack of awaiting books, she sucked it up and read the romance.  Doomed.

She started writing fantasy and paranormal romance for the cathartic experience, decided she liked it, and after two overlong, horribly written novels joined RWA and the Fantasy, Futuristic & Paranormal special interest chapter.  Best classes and critique groups ever.  Double doomed.  Now, writing is a necessity, not just a hobby.

In her spare time, when she’s not writing or reading or actually working, CJ might be found in the dojang (4th Dan Black Belt, baby), rooting on the Mariners (who will some day win the World Series), working out (P90X, anyone?), gardening (a little dirt never hurt anyone), or playing Music of the Night on the piano (without mask or cape). She lives in Oregon with her fabulous husband and daughter. Not to mention her minions, a herd of cats.

WONDERFULLY WICKED is CJ's Burright's first novel.
