Scents and Senses: Supernatural Friends. What the fairy tales didn’t tell you

Playing the role of a knight in shining armor is more complicated than it seems in the storybooks, as sixteen-year-old Joy discovers when she repeatedly comes to the rescue of a fifteen-year-old human. But when she meddles in the girl’s social life, Starra sends her packing.

Starra is determined to completely dissociate herself from the subterranean creature that has manipulated her life and cast her into the limelight. However, her resolve is soon tested when she becomes involved in a critical situation where supernatural assistance can enable her to carry out a daring plot.

Eventually, Starra’s involvement with her new other-wordly friends extracts a heavy price when she is beset by challenges that range from the down- to-earth struggles of a typical teenage student, to the realm of the fantastic. Nothing prepares her, however, for the ultimate challenge.

Author Interview

1. What inspired you to want to become a writer?

It’s a cliché, but when I was a child I truly aspired to become an author, and create more of the magic that enchanted me so. However, in high school, I was a confidant to many friends, and that’s how I became infatuated with psychology. As it turned out, I did indeed study the field in college and graduate school.  When I was finishing up my graduate work five years ago, I realized that my satisfaction with delving into the human psyche to write psychological reports could be channeled into my early passion of creating fictional stories.

2. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.

My book has just been released this month, so I’m still a debutant in this gratifying newly published state.  But I can say that what I found most rewarding in the whole writing process was to read a manuscript I toiled over for years and finally feel it was ready for publication.

3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?

My mind separates the author from the work, so I’m not particularly desperate to have any signed copy. Yet I wouldn’t mind one of either Pride and Prejudice or The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes -- if you happen to have either of these lying around. They’re both old favorites of mine, and it would be extraordinary to hold such historical literary items.

4. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?

Ever since I was little, I have dreamt of levitating off the ground, drifting around like a ghost. In my conscious state, I’d pick drawing. To me it seems like magic when an artist captures life on canvas.

5. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.

Scents and Senses will educate you on the thrills and dangers of befriending supernatural creatures ;)

6. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?

The manuscript for the second book in the Scents and Senses trilogy is in the process of being edited for submission. The manuscript for the third book has gone through several drafts, but hasn’t been edited yet.

7. Do you write as you go or do you have the book planned before you start the first draft?

Scents and Senses is the first book in its series, and the story led me.  By the time I got to the first draft for the third, the plot was basically outlined, but I still left myself room to be surprised. Suspense is one of the biggest motivators that pushes me to write.

8. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Winter (The Lunar Chronicles) by Marissa Meyer. I’m hoping for a "happily-ever-after" conclusion because I’ve been reading too many depressing dystopian trilogies lately.

9. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?

After the tough winter we’ve had here in Canada, anywhere sunny and green. If I can push my luck, may I ask for a house with large bay windows overlooking the ocean?

10. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?

Most definitely.  Defining attributes of Starra, the protagonist, were inspired by those of a close friend from high school, but her core personality was heavily influenced by my own.

Thank you for hosting me!

Excerpt from Scents and Senses

Last night, in Senior Elder’s weekly address, he said it had come to his attention that many of our teens were planning to pop in to the fivetoe gala event. While he admitted there was nothing wrong, per se, in hanging around, he advised staying away from the action, as we might be tempted to join in.

He reminded us that ever since a deviant group of our ancestors wreaked too much mischief two thousand years ago, we’ve been banned from communicating or associating with fivetoes.

Tag kicked me under the table. But I don’t carry a speck of guilt. If I hadn’t sidestepped some bans, my sister would be lonesome, and a fivetoe girl would have been shamed on the playing field, knocked senseless by an attacker, and fallen off a cliff.

The same fivetoe high school freshman wouldn’t have landed the lead role in our island’s biggest production of the decade if not for my intervention.

In approximately ninety minutes I know Starra will receive a standing ovation from the audience now filling every available seat. The bleachers are packed, and latecomers are taking the seats set up on the high school’s athletics' field. It looks like the majority of the islanders are here, and then there all the hundreds of mainlanders who came in to support this fundraising event tonight. Starra’s talent will be publicly acknowledged at last. I see fame in her future. All thanks to me.

Not that I expect any thanks from her.

No, the star of the show wouldn’t even want me here tonight, but tough luck. I’m not about to miss out on the vicarious pleasure of basking in her spotlight.

I’ve squeezed myself into a spot suited for a VIP. I’ll be almost right under Starra’s nose — whoops, that’s a problem; she’ll pick up my scent and know I’m here. The girl is a bloodhound. She’s the only fivetoe that can sense my presence. What the faulty

fivetoe sense of sight can’t do, her uncanny sense of smell makes up for.

Okay, the trick is to get a seat close enough to the stage to sense the emotions of those on stage, but not close enough for her to smell me. That spot a couple rows down will do it. As I settle in between two fighting brothers, I catch sight of some of my schoolmates hanging around. It’s already dark out, but still it’s early for our community to be up and around. Looks like the island’s teenagers from down below are willing to forego some snooze time just to see for themselves what the big fuss above us these past few months has been all about.

There’s still time till the curtain goes up. Meanwhile, the school band entertains the audience as they get settled. I catch some of the girls in my high school clamping their hands to their ears. Yeah, I get it. Even our kindergarteners banging on rocks produce finer music than fivetoe amateur musicians. But it doesn’t bother me as much as them since lately I’ve spent so much time hanging around fivetoe teens.

Two seniors to my far left are communicating in sign language, which is the safest way to talk around fivetoes. I’m eavesdropping on their gossip, and they’ve just reached a juicy climax, when out of nowhere a particularly tall fivetoe blocks my view. He turns around and takes his seat. My view is not obstructed anymore, but I lose interest in the gossip as soon as I catch sight of the intruder’s face. What’s Luc doing here? True, he’s a native islander, but he hardly has shown his face around here since he started college. And the last time we saw him, he was trouble. Then again, I have him to thank for getting me addicted to playing fairy godmother. His face is a trigger to my memory, and my mind replays my history with Starra.

Yeah, we’ve had our rough spots, but tonight makes up for it all. I’m positive in a few minutes she’s going to knock the socks off her fellow islanders fivetoed feet.

The curtains are going up.

This is it, people. Meet the real Starra Hart.

About the Author
Loren Secretts was raised in a book-filled home, in a sleepy east coast suburb of the US. These factors are undoubtedly responsible for her early design of a number of exciting imaginary worlds that she could escape to from time to time during her childhood. In her teen years, between schoolwork and lending an ear to her friends, Loren had less opportunity to go AWOL. Instead, her experience as a confidant to others inspired her to major in psychology in college and earn her M.A. in the field on the west coast. As an adult, Loren has found fulfillment in her work with children and families for more than a decade. Her passion for writing was revived when she discovered that she enjoyed delving into the human psyche to write psychological reports. But clients' reports are safe with Loren, who guards secrets fastidiously. Indeed, one of her aspirations is to work as a psychotherapist for the CIA, but since she now lives with her family in Canada, that dream will have to await its turn…

Blog Tour Guest Post & Giveaway - LARP: The Battle for Verona by Justin Calderone

LARP: The Battle for Verona
by Justin Calderone

UNDERDOG TALE DIVES INTO THE ADVENTUROUS WORLD OF LIVE ACTION ROLE PLAYING

Author Justin Calderone introduces his newest book, LARP: The Battle for Verona

VERONA, Penn. – February 2013 Even geeks can be heroes in Justin Calderone’s latest novel LARP: The Battle for Verona, a fantasy adventure tale of true friendship and the disastrous consequences of social pressure.

Dennis, the main character in LARP: The Battle for Verona, is a 20-something live action role player, or LARPer, who is seriously considering giving up the game for good. He’s tired of dealing with his overzealous friend, Mark; he’s tired of his older brother’s constant put-downs; and he’s tired that he doesn’t have a girlfriend – particularly Alyssa, the one woman he’s been pining over for years.

Dennis and his fellow LARPers have never been considered cool, but there’s a chance to change that when a rogue terrorist group of Mongolians in medieval garb invades their hometown of Verona, a fictional island located off the coast of Washington State. With the US military out of options to save the island, the friends decide to do what any dedicated LARPer would do – put on armor, strap on swords and fight for their home.

“The message is that anyone can be a hero at any time,” said Calderone, of the fantasy novel. “Social classification is meaningless. If you believe in yourself, you can overcome any obstacle.”

One of Calderone’s main goals in creating LARP: The Battle for Verona was to write a novel that is appropriate for any audience. “Many Christian parents don’t want their kids reading contemporary young adult, or fantasy novels, because of the controversial themes in those novels,” Calderone said, adding, “So, I wrote a book that is thrilling, engrossing and suitable for everyone.”

Additionally, LARP: The Battle for Verona is a novel with a broad age appeal, much like The Hunger Games, Twilight and Harry Potter.

New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry calls Calderone’s novel “a witty, action-packed adventure that will leave you breathless.”

Fantascize.com raves about LARP: The Battle for Verona calling it a “Geek Gem…a fair balance of action, adventure, cynicism, and romance. I would recommend this book for adults and teens.”

Calderone is a high school English teacher and author of Revolutions, a collection of poems published in 2004. A graduate of La Roche College and Gannon University, Calderone is expected to earn his second master’s degree from Edinboro University in 2014.

GUEST POST

Life is a big high school cafeteria, and society (you and me!) has labeled everyone. But, the message of LARP: The Battle for Verona is that the peer pressure we face in our teen years isn’t important, and it doesn’t last forever.

LARP is an acronym, which stands for Live Action Role Play. These are the folks who dress up in period garb and reenact battles, and, sometimes, entire historical villages. LARPers fall under the “geek” umbrella, which also houses Star Wars/Star Trek fans, sci-fi fans, and gamers.

I wrote LARP: The Battle for Verona with the idea that we’re all geeks, and we just don’t know it. Who’s to say that the aging football jock is any cooler than a LARPer? Maybe the geek chick in your 11th grade math class would be a better option than the head cheerleader, because the cheerleader isn’t gonna look like that forever. She might not even look like that next month!

Dennis, the main character in LARP: The Battle for Verona, is in his early ‘20s, and he faces these issues. Brad, his ultra-jock older brother, still harasses Dennis about being a LARPer, and still loves to tell his “greatest hits” of high school football stories. Dennis’ friends, Freddy and Mark, still enjoy LARPing, and haven’t changed, socially, since high school.

What if Dennis had followed in Brad’s footsteps, and joined the football team, instead of becoming a LARPer? What if he would have pursued Alyssa, his dream girl, instead of spending time with his “geek” friends?

Who hasn’t wondered “what if?” I know I have, and, maybe, LARP: The Battle for Verona is my way of answering that question for myself.

DREAM CAST

There is only one celebrity that I wrote a character for. That celebrity is *drumroll* BETTY WHITE. I adore her and I wrote the part of Esther White in the book for her. I realize that Betty is getting up there in years, so I started a tongue in cheek campaign to keep Betty White healthy. Here is the link on my blog http://dellaconnor.com/keep-betty-white-healthy/

Betty White’s twitter is @bettymwhite if you would like to join me in sending her best wishes for longevity.

I think Archie Hunt (Charlie’s Grandfather) should be played by Graham Greene from Dances with Wolves. Emme’s Grandfather, Grandpa Ed, and his friend Oscar Hines should be played by Robert Duvall for Grandpa Ed and Tommy Lee Jones for Oscar Hines. Grandpa Ed will be around for the rest of the series and Oscar Hines will be in flashbacks. I think it would be cool to reunite the Lonesome Dove co-stars.

Scott Belrose, Emme’s father, well I’m kind of torn. I like Rick Schroder, but well would Brad Pitt just be too sexy for the part? Please say no! I really am wishing now!

Angelina Jolie would make a great Josephine Grayson. Might as well have the couple together on set.

I’m saving the kids for the last.

I think Emme, Charlie, Ollie, Bets, Lilly and Jack should all be portrayed by relative newcomers. I want them to be the character and not recognized for another part they played in a different movie or show.

I would love to hear your ideas for these and other characters! Post them on my blog http://dellaconnor.com/keep-betty-white-healthy/

Marriage isn't for you
Marriage Isn't For You: It's for the One You Love

What is the best wedding advice you ever received?

For author Seth Adam Smith, it was the advice from his father who said, Marriage is not for you. It is about the person you marry. These few words completely changed the way Seth looked at his relationship with his wife-to-be. Because at that moment he realized that an expression of love is not about the person expressing it. Rather, it is about the person they choose to be with. It is about making the person you marry feel loved.

Seth's blog post on the subject was viewed by more than twenty-seven million people, and he has been featured on several national TV programs including The Today Show. Now released as a hardcover book, these sage words make the perfect gift for newly married couples, those who have been around the block a few times, or anyone who wants to learn how to make their relationships stronger.

Blog Tour Author Interview & Giveaway - Lamb To the Slaughter by Karen Ann Hopkins

Lamb To The Slaughter
by Karen Ann Hopkins

Synopsis:
Some Amish communities aren't so cozy.

Lamb to the Slaughter is a story about the intertwining lives of three unlikely people in an Indiana Amish Community and the devastating results when a rebellious teenage girl is found shot to death in a corn field during the harvest.

Serenity Adams is the newly elected young sheriff in the country town of Blood Rock and besides dealing with the threatening behavior of her predecessor, she now has a dead Amish girl on her plate.  At first glance, the case seems obvious.  The poor girl was probably accidently shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl’s parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious.  As she delves deeper into the secretive community that she grew up beside, she discovers a gruesome crime from the past that may very well be related to the Amish girl’s shooting.

Serenity enlists the help of the handsome bad-boy building contractor, Daniel Bachman, who left the Amish when he was nineteen and has his own dark reasons to help the spunky sheriff solve the crime that the family and friends who shunned him are trying desperately to cover up.  Serenity’s persistence leads her to a stunning discovery that not only threatens to destroy her blossoming romance with Daniel, but may even take her life in the end.

*Lamb to the Slaughter is book one of Serenity’s Plain Secrets.

Author Interview

1. For those who don't know you, can you tell us a little about yourself?

I live in northern Kentucky with my five children on a farm that boasts a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats. My main job is home schooling the kids, but I find time to give riding lessons, coach a youth equestrian drill team, and of course, write books. I was inspired to write my first book, TEMPTATION, from the Amish community that I live in. The experiential knowledge I gained through interactions with my neighbors drove me to create the story of the star-crossed lovers, Rose and Noah, which continued in Belonging and came to a thrilling conclusion in Forever.

Lamb to the Slaughter is an Amish murder mystery that I began writing over a year ago after my agent asked me if I could create such a thing on demand.  I became intrigued with the idea, especially since I had personally witnessed some strange and almost creepy goings-on in the community.  I really wanted to delve deeper into the darker side of being Amish, especially in relation to my personal passion, the lives of the teenagers and some of the harsh realities they’re faced with.

2. What has been the scariest moment in your life?

A pretty memorable incident that I’d have to put at the top of my scariest moments list is a fall I took off a horse on the edge of a cliff. I was in my early twenties at the time of the incident and working at a riding stable in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I guided horse-back riding tours on the mountain trails and loved the job immensely. At the end of the season, all the guides who worked at the stable would get together for a ‘guide ride’ up to Rainbow Falls. The trip generally took a few hours and would have been a pleasurable excursion if it hadn’t been for the fact that another guide took the horse that I usually rode and I was stuck with a very temperamental Appaloosa mare for the trip.  When we’d almost reached our destination, a few other riders who had left earlier, passed by me heading back down the trail. They were galloping along on a flat stretch and when they passed by me, my lovely horse, Tonya, spooked and whirled around to race after them. I had absolutely no control whatsoever and in a flash we were well past the other riders. The trail quickly narrowed and I found myself with a shear drop off of hundreds of feet on my left and a steep embankment to the right. The usual trick of turning the mare into a stop was not an option.

Tonya was hard mouthed and insane to boot. I endured a couple of agonized moments of racing down the mountain trail, dodging tree branches and thinking about my two baby boys who were at home being babysat by my mother. I honestly feared that they were going to grow up without a mother.  The scariest part was that it seemed to take forever to for the ride-from-hell to end.  We finally reached a place where a large Hemlock tree encroached too far onto the trail to easily pass.  At that moment I squeezed my eyes shut and prayed that the horse somehow managed to get by the tree without crashing into it or swerving off the side of the cliff.  Luckily for me and Tonya, she kept her footing and curled around that massive tree trunk.  She barely slowed for the object in her path and my right side hit the tree, knocking me from the crazy horse.  I laid there in the churned up dirt of the trial for a minute, thanking God and the universe that I was still alive.  All in all, I ended up with a torn ear and a long swath of nasty looking bruises down my arm and leg, but I was unharmed other than that.  Tonya made it down the mountain without injury and I rode her several times after that, but never on a guide ride again.

3. As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Growing up in upstate New York, I was bitten by the horse bug at the tender age of five.  After diligently taking riding lessons for several years I was rewarded by my parents with my first horse at the age of eleven. The feisty horse’s name was Lady, a Quarter Horse-Thoroughbred cross, who became my steadfast companion. Through the years the constant force in my life were horses, from pleasure riding and showing, to eventually finding a place as a riding instructor myself.  So I guess you can say I’ve always wanted to be a great equestrian and hoped to make a livelihood in the equine industry.

4. Who should play you in a film?

That’s an interesting question.  I think about actors for my characters all the time, but never for me personally.  If I had my pick, I’d be thrilled if Cate Blanchett played me.  She has the right balance of earthiness and leadership qualities that I can relate to.

5. What would we find under your bed?

A lot of cat hair!  I have five house cats and have joked on many occasions how their hair seems to gather under the bed as if it’s trying to become a brand new cat.

6. Tell us about your family.

I’m blessed with five beautiful children.  My oldest is nineteen and is currently working with the Amish learning the trade of becoming a master house builder.  My seventeen year old son is into everything soccer and my fourteen year old daughter is a mini-me, riding on an equestrian team and spending all her free time on the back of a horse.  My eleven year old son is a little Harry Potter wannabe and my youngest daughter, who is eight, is a mixture between ultra girly and Tom boy, making her an extremely confusing and saucy child.

7. Do you have a love interest?

I’ve finally made it through a stretch of some very rough years.  After moving to northern Kentucky from Tennessee for my ex-husband’s work in 2008, he left the family and returned the south by himself shortly thereafter.  He was remarried to another woman within a few months of our divorce, and I’ve been a struggling single mother of five since then.  For a long time I didn’t even want to think about love, which was ironic since I was in the middle of writing the romantic Temptation series. Betrayal is a very difficult thing to overcome, but when I was least expecting it, a really wonderful guy came along and my children and I couldn’t help falling in love with him.  I’m happy once again and almost completely healed from the past.

Thirty-Eight Days
Author: Lennwebster
Genre: Romance

Wattpad Book Blurb:
Ask yourself, how many days does it take to fall in love?

Nolan Parker and Clara Lawrence never saw eye to eye. In fact, if you asked Clara she would tell you that Nolan Parker hated every thing about her. They never shared any form of connection besides Alex Lawrence.

She was Alex’s bratty sister and he was Alex’s best friend, they never stood a chance.

Five years have passed and almost 12,000 miles have kept them separated, both living completely different lives. Unchanged perceptions and expectations should have kept them apart but when Nolan returns, the foundations of their ‘relationship’ is sure to change.

Their story was meant to end the day Nolan left for Stanford. But what if seeing each other after five years was the game changer? What if this was their one chance to rewrite their relationship or were they always destined to never be more?

Author Interview

1. Please tell the readers a bit about yourself.

Hi there! My name’s Len Webster. And yes, that’s actually my name and no, it’s not short for anything. I’m twenty-one and a business and commerce student about to graduate at the end of the year. I love to travel and try to as much as possible. Out of all the places I’ve been to, the North East of England was my favourite. When I’m not at university or writing, I’m a proud sports enthusiast and lover of Sunderland AFC. Oh! And I’m cupcake addict!

2. What types of books do you write?

I write romance. I like to write ‘real’ conflict and I love to write how reality and miscommunication really affects a relationship between characters. I’ve been known to end things differently (non-traditional endings) and I’m all about writing books that leave an impression and reaction. At the moment, I’m writing my first Chicklit so it’s still romance but for this book, it’s more about life lessons and overcoming a tragic moment in my character’s life and romance is one theme but it’s not THE theme. I’ve written a crime and thriller, The Ribbon Chasers (published in Library of Dreams), and I loved it but my strongest genre is definitely romance, but I do have hopes of maybe writing a full length novel in another genre, hopefully along the lines of crime and thriller again.

3. How many books have you written?

Completed wise, three. If you count books that haven’t been completed, It’d be in its twenties.

4. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

Actually, MANY! 2014 is THE year for movies. I’m desperately waiting for ‘The Fault In Our Stars’, “Divergent’ and ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part one’. As for books, anything Abbi Glines is writing. I know she has about 5 or 6 books coming out in the next 6 months, so I’m on edge to read them!

5. What type of books do you enjoy reading?

As a reader, I’m very open to different genres. It might shock a few people but I’m actually a closet military reader and anything history related I would read. I’m actually reading a military autobiography at the moment. There are a few reasons why I love military autobiographies, my father was in the Australia defense force and I hold so much respect for any who has, is or will enlist and serve their country. My brother is actually about to join the Royal Australian Navy, so it runs in my family. Also, military autobiographies give you a glimpse of a world you don’t know or you think you do and you’re completely wrong: they’re real and honest, that’s what I like to read. But as a romance author, I love to read any kind of romance. One, I’m a hopeless romantic. And two, I like to see how different authors portray love and romance, and the challenges their characters face.

6. If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?

1. Bear Grylls – that man will save my life.

2. Water – I can go without food but if it’s a desert island, I’m going to need this!

3. A satellite phone – makes having Bear Grylls a little redundant ... still!

7. Are you considering a sequel?

I’ve actually written Thirty-Eight Days a sequel, Thirty-Eight Reasons. As for whether or not I have a third book in the series, I don’t know. I’ve left it open to a third but we’ll see. Just don’t hold your breath!

8. What inspired you to become a writer?

Goodness, I love this question. A million and one reasons inspired me to become a writer. I think my grandparents inspire me to write romances. My grandparents are what made me believe in True Love. They argued and annoyed each other but at the end of the day they truly loved each other. And that one love story is my favourite love story. Because their happily ever after was growing old together and having children and grandchildren. That’s the best happily ever after.
