MY REVIEW

It was the book cover that made me want to pick this one up. It stands out, and just like the cover, the main character, Hope, also stands out in this story. This book has all the hallmarks of our reality, but the world has been flipped upside down. If parallel universes did exist, I would imagine there would be a reality just like this one where everyone had a special ability or at least it was common to possess a superhuman quality. Hope is surrounded by people with magnificent abilities. Those without abilities, such as Hope, are ostracised and ridiculed for being abnormal.

Hope wants nothing more than to fit into her world and not feel like an outcast at home and at school. She's tired of being a lab rat, undergoing treatment after treatment in a bid to find the cure to unleash her dormant powers. Apart from her best friend, Allie, the only friend who stood by Hope after developing her abilities, the only other person who makes her feel a little less hopeless is Asher, the highly intelligent student she met on one of her many hospital visits who has the ability to mimic people's voices but can sometimes remain stuck with the last replicated voice for days. Due to his defective ability, Asher falls into the same category as Hope, a maladroit, those who exhibit undesirable abilities and are at the bottom of the food chain.

Having to deal with school bullies who constantly remind her of her failures is one thing, but when Allie starts to drift away from her in favour of the popular crowd, Hope and the school hottie, Eric, start to grow closer. The closer they become, they more she realises there's something familiar but rather odd about Eric's behaviour. When Hope discovers the true reason behind Eric's strange behaviour, she's left with a difficult decision that could mean hurting those she loves. Being forced to take charge, Hope learns that sometimes being the odd one out can have its advantages and maybe, just maybe, she's special because she is unlike anyone else.

This was a very moving coming of age story and an enjoyable one at that. I liked the character of Hope. She held the story well. I thought there was a little too much focus on her lack of abilities that we didn't really get to see much of her other qualities until nearing the end of the book. While I understood the motivation behind Asher's decisions and the reason why he was not prominently featured throughout the story, I would have liked more interaction between him and Hope in the earlier chapters to get a better inclination into his turmoil. I felt I didn't connect with him as much, which was a shame because he played such a big part in making Hope acknowledge her inner strength. Having said that, I liked the themes portrayed throughout. Despite being unfamiliar with Hope's reality in the sense of everyone exhibiting special abilities, I felt a great familiarity with the ambience of Hope's world and had reasonable knowledge of the social pressure of trying to fit in that could leave one emotionally damaged. I definitely felt a connection to her on some level. I also liked Allie as a character. She had her flaws, which made her feel real, but I would have appreciated a little more insight into her home life or just more insight into her mindset so as to rationalise her behaviour in certain scenes. I liked that the characters were all different and had different personalities. Sometimes it's hard to remember certain characters because they all seem so similar, but that's not the case in Special. I recalled all the characters, even the stereotypical bullies, which was good as it means they made an impression on me and they helped to bring the world alive in my head.

This was a quick read, and I would certainly recommend it.

Can Santa find his little elf and bring him home in time for Christmas?

MY REVIEW

I don’t recall reading many Christmas-themed books in my adult years, but I must say this book brought great Christmas vibes into my home, just in time for the Christmas season. It follows Santa’s smallest elf, Ralph, who runs away from home as he feels neglected and as though no one wants him around. He quickly realises his mistake as he’s caught in a storm, however, he runs into a friendly old lady and gets caught up in quite the pickle as he tries to make it back home.

This was a lovely tale. Ralph was a likeable and relatable character. It was easy to connect with him and understand the dilemma he was facing. It just reminds you of the spirit of Christmas and the power this holiday has in bridging gaps and bringing people together. There were a few illustrations displayed throughout the story, which I liked as I found them to be rather cute. I would definitely recommend this book.

A simple and wonderful tale.

MY REVIEW

You have to love a magical story such as this book. It has everything needed to get into the mood of Christmas. When Silver goes searching for her magical Christmas bell, she happens across young Sabrina, who is lost in the forest after having been put to work by her stepmother, who is heartbroken following the disappearance of Sabrina's father one year ago. With Sabrina having found Silver's bell, Silver decides to use her magical to bring some happiness back into Sabrina's life by helping her find out what happened to her father. Sabrina even gets to have one wish for returning Silver's bell to her.

This was my favourite read among the three books I've read by the author. I loved all the characters and found myself at times wishing for a wonderful fairy like Silver to pop up and solve some of the dilemmas facing the world right now. It was a simple yet magical tale of how one small act of kindness can lead to a grand gesture that can be life-changing.

A wonderful read indeed. I would definitely recommend this book.

MY REVIEW

Silver, Wonder and Winn are back with a new magical tale and a new ensemble of colourful characters. There's something fishy going in the village of Lavender Hollow, so Santa sends Silver, Wonder and Winn to go check it out ahead of Christmas Eve. When they get to the village, they realised they couldn't locate it. Coming across a woman out in the forest, they are told that no such place exists. What happened to Lavender Hollow and its people and could magic be behind the disappearance of this village so loved by Santa? Things are definitely not what they appear to be, and it's up to Silver, Wonder and Winn to unsolve the mystery.

As always, Silver is a wonderful character with a heart of gold. I must say I loved Phineas. He was adorable. Miranda was also a great addition to the story. I suspected she wasn't being truthful when we were first introduced to her, so I had my reservations about her intentions, but I really grew to like her as the story unfolded. Winn and Wonder were even bestowed with a little magic for themselves.

Loved it. I have really enjoyed this series thus far and would definitely recommend it to the whole family. It will certainly bring a little magic into your home.

Help Kids Overcome their Fears

When little Dan started to sleep on his own His parents were proud of how much he’d grown They gave him a monster, a sweet little doll To prove to the world – he was not scared at all!

MY REVIEW

This was an interesting and cute bedtime story about young Dan, whose parents gift him a toy monster as a sign of showing him how proud they were of him that he was now sleeping on his own. When Dan goes for a drink one night, he returns to his room to find his toy monster gone, and in its place stood a giant monster that looked identical to his toy monster. This monster, it appears, swallowed Dan's monster so it could grow. After spewing out a series of identical-looking monsters, the giant monster returns Dans monster to him.

This was an enjoyable read, and I loved the illustrations, so colourful and detailed. I will say that the idea of returning to ones room to a monstrous surprise might intimidate children who are in fact terrified of sleeping on their own, so Im not sure if the message of bravery and how to overcome ones fear will relay well with or be well received by children of that mindset, but I do like how little Dan handled the dilemma he was facing. The fact that he demanded his toy monster back shows he had overcome his fear.

Another good read by Adler.
