Blog Tour Review - My Dad Got Hurt, What Can I Do? by National Academy of Neuropsychology Foundation

My Dad Got Hurt, What Can I Do?
Author: National Academy of Neuropsychology Foundation
Genre: Children's Picture Book
Publication Date: July 31st, 2017

Book Description:
Every day, many children watch as a parent goes off to a military assignment, often in dangerous situations. Most children will later welcome home their parents who served without incident. Others, however, will greet a parent who suffered a head injury, which changes all their lives. While brain injury is a complex topic, it is an unfortunate fact that certain types of brain injuries, which are all too common in military personnel, affect a person's behaviors such as mood and temper. A previously kind and loving parent may become irritable, short-fused and be intolerant of frustration after a brain injury. To a child, this change can be scary and overwhelming. Children may not understand why Mom or Dad is so different and may blame themselves for their parent's moodiness. With illustrations by Valerio Mazzoli, this book offers young readers practical coping tools to empower children to feel confident about themselves and become a more active participant in his or her injured parent's life.

MY REVIEW

This was a very insightful book, for both the young and the old. After Jackson and Sally's father is deployed, he suffers a trauma to his head that starts to affect his mood and behaviour, which greatly affects the way the family interact with each other when he returns home. This book delves into the kind of difficulty faced when an injured soldier returns home. While it is focused on the life of a military family, many families will be able to relate to the circumstance of having suffered an injury and having it drastically alter their lives.

This book made me empathise with the struggles military families have to go through in situations like the one presented in the story. It's a well-constructed story that will enlighten children and adults alike. Loved the illustrations. Loved the authorial voice. Loved the simplicity of the story and how it was conveyed.

A must read.
