EXCERPT

Katie Fitzgerald cursed under her breath as she ran across the gravel parking area in heels. Never a good idea. The thought had no more entered her head when there was a sickening snap. She stumbled sideways as the ridiculously high heel of her right shoe fell to the ground. Katie lost her balance and was about to join her heel in the dirt and gravel. The items in her arms scattered everywhere. The string of inventive curses that followed colored the air around her.

Strong arms reached her, picking her up as though she weighed no more than a feather and placing her back on her feet. "I thought nice, Southern ladies didn’t know words like that," came an amused drawl from behind her.

Katie closed her eyes and tried for a snappy come back. Nothing. This was why she always avoided being close to him at work. It messed with her mind. Made it hard to think clearly. "No," she whispered in response. Even to her own ears it sounded weak.

"What if I said pretty please?" Flynn advanced, trapping Katie against the wall. He placed a large hand on either side of her head and covered her body with his own.

Katie forced herself to open her eyes and look at Flynn. She was so close to him, that she could see the small scar that lay to the right of one eyebrow. She had never noticed it before. Now she wanted to trace it with her finger. Or maybe her tongue. She struggled for rational thought instead.

Katie sighed and nodded. She opened her eyes to see his dark head bent over her knee. It was almost her undoing. He had put a paper towel on the coffee table and was using tweezers to pick out more gravel.

“Luckily, this looks much worse than it is. Road rash. I’m just cleaning it out.”

His head was so close to her knee that his words sent his hot breath wafting over her skin. And shivers to all the right places. Katie gripped the couch cushions on either side of her to keep her hands from roaming though his hair. Or down over his broad shoulders.

Katie's fair skin flamed. "I do not like him. I'd have sex with him in a heartbeat, but I don’t like him."

"Interesting. I'm not sure whether to be insulted or turned on."

Katie closed her eyes again. She wished the earth would open and swallow her whole. But even in her alcohol induced haze, she knew she wouldn't be that lucky.

"What makes you think we were talking about you? You're not the only man here." Still no sign of the floor shifting. Drat! She could use a little help from the universe about now.

“Well, you were sitting between Quinn and me. I had a fifty-fifty shot."

Katie opened her eyes and glared at Flynn. A devilish grin lit up his handsome face. The worst part was that everything she had said was true. But Flynn didn’t need to know that.

Mustering as much dignity as she could, Katie stood up. She wobbled a bit but didn’t fall. "Whatever. I'm assuming you've looked in a mirror, Flynn. You know you’re hot. Every woman at Windsor Falls Regional has a crush on you for goodness sake."

"I never noticed."

She scoffed. “Right. I must have imagined the flirting with everyone with a pulse then.” After smoothing a hand down her dress, Katie grabbed her purse. "I think I'll be heading upstairs now. I need a nap." She walked away, head held high and thankful for a graceful exit. Which was a great plan until she stumbled on her flip flops. She would have sprawled on the ground if Flynn hadn’t been there to catch her. With one strong arm around her waist, he scooped her up and tossed her over his shoulder in a fireman lift.

"I was drunk, Flynn. My judgment was not at its best."

"So, you weren’t responsible for what you said, Katie? Does that mean you didn’t mean it?"

Katie caught her lower lip between her teeth and thought about how best to answer. She hated lying. Even the smallest of lies. And he knew that about her, damn him. She turned to face him and took a deep breath. "Fine," she spat at Flynn. "Yes, I find you very sexy. But then who doesn't? I’m not planning on acting on it."

Flynn closed the distance between them and leaned into her. The heat of his body burned hers. It was suddenly difficult to breathe. "What if I told you that I find you incredibly sexy too? Would that make a difference?"

Katie closed her eyes and tried for a snappy come back. Nothing. This was why she always avoided being close to him.

"Not even with a cherry on top, Flynn. You're not my type." For an honest person, Katie was lying a lot she thought with disgust. To herself now. Of course, he was her type. He was over six feet of toned muscle. He was every woman's type.
