We sat down at the same round table. Our hands clasped underneath. Her palm was sweaty and my fingers trembled.

They arrived together, their appearances as different as two men could be. Warren looked older than any picture I’d ever seen of him. His dark eyes sat in sunken hollows of his skeletal face. His shoulders hunched and a dark blue jumpsuit hung off his bony frame.

Trent’s muscles rippled off every inch of him, starting with his neck. If he hadn’t tripped over his feet, nearly knocking Warren over, he might have been intimidating.

“Great,” I murmured to my clumsy bestie, “you’re related.”

“Anyone could be uncoordinated,” she bit back. She might have had a stronger defense if they didn’t share eyes and her mom hadn’t already admitted he was her father.

Trent fell down opposite us, but Warren just stood there. “Gotta get up,” he said to me.

“Excuse me?” I gasped.

“Two of us can’t sit together.” One of his gnarled fingers gestured back to Trent. “You gotta get up. We’ll sit over here. You and me.”

I squeezed Charli’s fingers, silently asking if she’d read anything about this during her many hours of research. The plan was for all of us to be together. That was the only reason I tagged along, the only reason I agreed to let her do it too. I was Warren’s visitor, she was Trent’s, but we were all together.

She cut glances back and forth between the men, her lips flapping in confusion. Typical. I loved that my little caterpillar was blossoming into a take-charge-butterfly, but she’d caught her leg on the cocoon.

Staring directly into Warren’s dead eyes out of practiced calm, my voice warbled, “I’m not going anywhere with you.”

He rocked back on his heels. Anger flashed in his eyes. “Then ya wasted a trip.”

“Just go,” Charli mumbled. “I’m fine.”

Was she? Trent could have reached across the table and broken her neck. It wouldn’t have taken a second, judging by his muscled arms. Furthermore, what about me? I didn’t want to leave Charli to go with this freak.

I was still trying to make up my mind on whether or not to say screw-it to the whole trip when I caught Warren’s focus honed in on my tits. Slapping my palm over my non-existent cleavage, I snorted in disbelief. The freaking pervert licked his lips.

God, if Collin saw this, he’d beat the ever loving shit out of his father.

“Ugh, whatever.”
