1. What inspired you to want to become a writer?
The Goonies. I saw that movie and was like: “You mean someone thought up of that story? Ok… I’m going to be a writer.”
2. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Having the few people who read it say they thought it was hilarious. I think every book should make you laugh out loud somewhere.
3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
Little Women – it was the first book I ever read.
4. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
The ability to control water. I think the sound effects and possibilities would be cool. (Bloop, bloop, bloop)
5. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
You'll close the book with a smile on your lips
6. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
‘The Cilantro in Apple Pie’ is a trilogy, so book 2 is my current work in progress. I might write a romance in the future too.
7. Do you write as you go or do you have the book planned before you start the first draft?
I usually have a storyboard going before I start but it’s subject to change as new ideas pop up in my head.
8. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?

9. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Alaska - went there and wanted to stay
10. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I definitely see a great deal of myself in the main character Rubie but I also see myself in the lead male character Gil too. He does the stuff I wish I had the balls to do
Kimberley Nadine Knights knew when she kept willingly opting out of parties so she could stay home and write, that she was destined to be an author.
Born and raised in the tropical twin islands of Trinidad & Tobago, when this Caribbean girl isn’t creating new plotlines for her ever growing lineup of fictional characters, she spends her time strumming her guitar to indie rock songs and snapping once in a lifetime photos halfway across the globe in countries such as Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and France.
She's an avid fan of The Walking Dead series and firmly believes that The Food Network should consider her being a judge on the next Chopped challenge.

how did you begin writing this novel?
ReplyDeleteFunny...it started as a joke then it grew into something I needed to write as I met interesting people during my travels

ReplyDeleteI'm really not sure what exactly inspires me but I always sit down and think: "Hmm...how would this idea play out as a movie?"
DeleteI want my book to lay out good as a film, so I write to make people react as if they were sitting down in a bucket seat eating pop-corn...
What made you choose the genre that you write in? Have you always written in that genre? Thanks
ReplyDeleteI've always loved YA. To me it's just relatable...you're either a young adult or wish you were a young adult again. Across the board appeal! So yeah, YA is my preferred genre but I'm definitely playing around with some ideas that are branching out to NA & Adult Romance...

DeleteThe Goonies!!! I loved that answer, that movie is epic! What was it specifically about the movie that gave you the idea to be a writer? Was it the story line itself? The actors? I'm curious to know because I seriously love that movie :D
ReplyDeleteIt was the storyline and the way how it started off so ordinary and ended up to be such an extraordinary adventure!! Also the characters: a bunch of 13 yr olds, an older brother, the older brother's love interest, older brother's love interest's friend, a bunch of lousy crooks. I mean, what's not to love about that movie!
DeleteIt hit me hard the first time I saw it and I've never forgotten the impact it had on me.

DeleteThe next novel is from the male lead Gil's POV so it's gonna be way more angst and raw grit.
Do you have the ending when you begin the novel?

Hello Kimberly, how long did it take to write The Cilantro in Apple Pie?
ReplyDeleteQuite awhile actually, because it took me some time to find the correct plot direction. I'm not a fast writer (yes I'm flawed lol)...but as life went on and I visited new places and met different people, those experiences influenced my writing.
DeleteI was muddling over it for 3 yrs but I finished it in about a year.
Which comes first, the plot or the characters, when you begin writing a book?

ReplyDeleteThe idea that has a beginning, middle and end I approach first. Sometimes you have lots of ideas but they're only concepts that get you excited; and you have no idea how to get from Chp 1 to 'The End.'

DeleteWith writer's block I force myself to write 1000 words a day or start a storyboard on a new idea.

ReplyDeleteALWAYS! Music is basically your thoughts transformed into notes. So sometimes I start strumming my guitar and the melody leads me to a better scene or a more cohesive plotline :)
