Author Interview

1. What you do when you’re not writing? What are your aspirations for the future?
When I’m not writing, I'm usually doing things for and with my family, reading, or watching a show on TV. I like vacations a lot, so take the opportunity to have those as much as I can. My aspirations for the future are as broad and colorful as my imagination can concoct. I’m looking forward to saying good-bye to the minivan and getting a new car (daughters are almost grown), I'd like to travel with my husband, and I look forward to my readership continuing to grow so I can get to know more amazing people like the ones stopping by today.

2. When and why did you start writing?
I wrote my first short story when I was about 10. It was written from our dog's point of view and was a comedic take on a day in the life of our family.

3. Have any particular novels or writers influenced your writing?
I was influenced a lot by Rudyard Kipling. Loved Jungle Book and read it several times as a girl. Also Tolkien. Read The Hobbit a few times as a child, as well. And I always loved the Narnia and Wizard of Oz books. Not surprising that I now write Urban Fantasy.

4. Give us some backstory behind Savage Magic. Where and when did you write it?
I started Savage Magic over a year ago, but a family illness took priority and I wasn't able to get back to it until after February of this year. I do most of my writing in my home office, though sometimes I'll move out to the back deck when the weather’s nice. I used to write in coffee shops but found it was too hard for me to concentrate, although I know many authors who are very successful with doing that.

5. What was your favourite part of writing Savage Magic?
I always enjoy writing action scenes and with Addison around there are plenty of opportunities for those. But Savage Magic is also the most emotionally deep book in the series so far. I found conveying that challenging, yet at the same time taking characters I've come to know to a deeper level was very satisfying.

6. What does your writing schedule look like?
During the school year, I get up at 5:30, make sure our High Schooler catches the bus on time, and then I usually write for an hour or two before the dog has to go for her walk. After that, I'll work a couple more hours, have lunch, and then spend the rest of the afternoon taking care of the business side of being a novelist. By 3:00 I’ve prepped for the next day’s work and moved on to family and leisure time. If I'm in a crunch period, then I usually work up to 7 or 8 o'clock at night. Happily, if I don't let too many distractions keep me from writing, weeks like that don't happen very often.

7. Which fictional character would you like to take to dinner and why?
If I could take any fictional character to dinner, I would have to go with Sherlock Holmes. I think it would be great fun to have him analyze everybody in the restaurant. It would be even more fun if Dr. Watson came along so he could regale me with all of their most entertaining cases.

8. Besides your lead, do you have a favourite character in the story?
I've always had a soft spot for Falcon. He's a guy I'd like to bring home and introduce to my oldest daughter. Completely lovable and funny, and if anything in the house was broken, he'd know how to fix it. I adore Bellmonte, too, but I would never bring him home. Those who’ve read the series will completely understand why. ;)

9. What is one of the most surprising things you've learned as a writer?
That I can't do it all. I hear you laughing, and I can't blame you. I tend to be one of those people with a lot of energy and more ideas than I could ever write in a lifetime, and I tend to think that I absolutely can do it all. Sadly, that is not the case. I plan to live a long life and die trying though.

10. Any advice for aspiring authors?
1.    Pick the genre that excites you the most, and then focus on creating a series in that genre.
2.    Write the best book you can, and then write another one. Repeat often.
3.    Never stop learning and trying to improve.
4.    Treasure your readers and fans. Writing isn’t nearly as fun without them.

  7. What an intriguing book! Intriguing cover too. Do you have any input in the cover design for your books?

    1. Hi BookLady, thanks for stopping by! I do have control over the covers. This one was particularly challenging with a conversation something like, "It's set in the mountains this time with woods, and I want it to look like this monster came into the bookstore and raked its claws across the cover, and there's this mysterious guy, and..." My graphic artist is a saint. Just sayin'.
