The decline of King Cod was steep and dramatic. In 1968 the cod catch from the Grand Banks was 810,000 tons; in 1974 it was 34,000 tons. By the 1990’s the cod fishery was thought to be over and had only returned in a very limited capacity. Scientists feared it would never return to a viable industry. The depletion of the cod stocks had destroyed many communities on the coast of the island of Newfoundland and threatened many more, including Grand Bank.

It was a grand and glorious history that Sheila was reflecting on as their vehicle pulled into Marystown. But it was the future of Grand Bank that preoccupied her, and as she gazed out through the back window she wondered what she could do to both preserve the past and protect the future.

The loud banging noises that accompanied the RCMP van’s arrival at the Marystown jail brought Sheila back to reality. She was nervous, but knew enough about the procedures that would follow from her time with Windflower, that she could help the other three protestors who were sitting beside her in the vehicle. There were two older ladies who had worked in the Grand Bank fish plant when it was processing cod and operating around the clock. The other person was young Ches Hillier who was barely old enough to be arrested, but was as passionate as any of them.

Sheila spoke quietly to them to run through what she thought would happen next, telling them to relax and not worry. Having been around Windflower for so long, she relayed to them how the process would likely be smooth and professional. That’s what she had learned to expect from the RCMP.

Nonetheless, Sheila and her fellow protesters were soon to be processed and fingerprinted and charged with a crime.
