Book Description:
What the mind forgets, the heart remembers.
Alone in a train station bathroom, Sophia Hernandez has no memory of who she is or how she got there. All she’s certain of are three things: her college ID is a lie, bad people are coming for her, and no one can be trusted.

The only clue to her past is the fellow student who finds her. Although Sophia’s gut tells her Kyle is lying when he claims he can’t help her, his touch makes her heart race. Is it because of a red-hot natural attraction, or a missing memory of something far more dangerous?

As two mysterious, menacing men chase them from the station, Sophia’s memories return in frustrating fragments. So do deadly skills she didn’t know she had. In the next forty-eight hours, a loved one’s life will be on the line as she sifts through a mounting tangle of secrets and lies.

Including the most heart-wrenching secret of all. Not only isn’t she a normal college student, she isn’t even a normal human.

Warning: Contains one girl who is more than she seems, one boy who knows more than he’s telling, and enough twists to give you whiplash. Expect explosions of all kinds.

MY REVIEW:

I had no inkling into what I was  getting myself into when I decided to read this book, but what I did get from it was satisfying enough to convince me not only to read to the end of the book but it also made me excited about the sequel. This was a refreshing read indeed. I loved the thrill of the chase and the excitement brought upon by the mystery and suspense.

This book is equally plot driven as it is character driven, which certainly made for an interesting story that produced, within myself, quite a rollercoaster of emotions. The first third of the book was full of intrigue and excitement. We're introduced to Sophia, a college student who, having no recollection of who she is, has to unravel the missing pieces in order to protect herself from the danger that seems to be around every corner. The suspense of who, what, where and why kept me on the edge of my seat. I did get frustrated at times when irrelevant and information disconnected from the story kept intruding as they interrupted the smooth flow of the story and disrupted my focus. I get that they were done to introduce secondary characters but they weren't effective enough to allow me to bridge a connection to these characters. Honestly, I cared for only two characters in this story and that was Sophia and Kyle. I do recall the other characters but they appeared so insignificant to both the development of the story and the growth of the character that they made no impact on me.

I thought the flashbacks throughout were done effectively. They didn't create any form of confusion and was a good way to explore Sophia's development as a character. She went through quite the transformation from start to finish. It did take me a little while to form a connection with Sophia as the first part of the story was heavily focused on establishing the actual plot so the development of a situation was at the forefront while Sophia took the backseat. Sophia's actions and the methods she applied in her bid to discover Student X made me question the author's approach to the story whereas I should have been questioning the character's approach to a situation. I found myself analysing this on a few occassions and whenever I was in this mindframe, I was always pulled out of the story.

The first and final parts were the sections of the story that had me most intrigued. The story started with a bang and ended in the same fashion. The second part, where we discover more about Sophia's background and her mission, didn't maintain that the same level of vitality as the beginning and the end of the book. It lost my focus during this section and I found I had to remind myself of how fascinating the first part was in order to continue reading. The idea of a love triangle forming with the introduction of Cole wasn't enough to ignite my excitement about the story and were it not for the flashback chapters that saw Sophia back at RTC (Robert Treat College), I might have given up on the story. But I'm glad I persevered to Part Three as the story picked up again with even more velocity than it had prior to Part Two.The final part of the story is where Sophia comes alive, for most of this section we see her working on her own initiative. She's now in the driving seat and is taking control of how the rest of the story unfolds.

I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the sequel.

About the Author
Tracey Martin grew up outside of Philadelphia, the lucky recipient of a drama-free childhood, which is why she spent so much time reading about other people’s lives. It was while she was working on her doctorate in psychology that she had an epiphany–imaginary people are way more fun than real ones. And so she began writing. Never able to choose just one of anything, she currently writes both urban fantasy for adults and contemporary stories for teens.

She likes her coffee simple, her music epic, and her movies to contain explosions. A city girl at heart, she doesn’t understand how she and her husband ended up living in New Hampshire, but writing keeps her off the mean, small town streets. You can find her online at tracey-martin.com.
