yourself in seven words or less!
Why?
2. Tell us something about your
current hometown.
It’s
Chicago, and I love it here. It’s always been a place where people who wanted
to work hard and who believed in themselves could succeed. It’s not a place for
the weak or unambitious, I’ll tell you that.
3. What's the strangest thing that has
ever happened to you?
Frankly,
it might be this interview. I am not one to answer questions about himself. I
am not comfortable with it at all. I have a past, okay? A very difficult past.
I mean, heck, you want strange? I’ll give you strange. Try having a mom talk
you into doing something horrible when you’re just a little kid. Try that.
Sorry,
you hit a sore spot with that one. Really. Sorry.
4. What's your favourite food?
Bourbon.
And, by the way, you spelled “favorite” wrong.
5. Can you tell us a little about what
to expect in The Redeeming Power of Brain Surgery?
Well,
it’s a story that’s very very difficult for me. And as you can tell, I’m not
all that happy to share it. It’s about a terrible thing that should never
happen to a child and about how I tried, I really tried, to keep it our
family’s business and no one else’s––like it should be. It’s about me and my
simple, simple twin brother and my father’s de… disappearance and about how my
mother… well you just have to read it. The whole thing is pretty intense and
shocking, especially with what I learned at the end of it.
6. Can you tell us something about
yourself we don't learn from the book?
You’re
really pushing me. As I said, some things are private and should stay that way.
But if I was forced to talk about me, which I hate, I’d say I’m way more
protective of my family, way more loving overall, than you might think. I feel
deeply about my wife and son; I wish I could tell them that. It’s tough. It’s
complicated.
7. What is your author Paul Flower
like?
He’s
a guy from southwest Michigan, America’s heartland, just like me. He spent his
career writing advertising but was always writing fiction on the side. He tried
for nearly 30 years to get this story published, so he’s either a loser or very
persistent. Or maybe a little of both. Nice guy, though. He understands that
all of us are a mix of good and evil. That we all have secrets. I guess his
secret was this book. Ironic, eh?
8. Name five items in your purse or
pockets right now.
Wallet,
key fob to my Mercedes, air, air, air. I hate having stuff in my pockets. It
feels and looks sloppy.
9. What was your first impression of
Detective Harvey Monahan?
A
sloppy, cocky, self-aggrandizing cop who was probably a real delinquent as a
kid. I saw him for what he was: someone who could have gone either way in life
and chose the legal route. But he could bounce over to the bad side at the drop
of a hat. Also, he could use a haircut.
10. If you had one chance to change
anything about your life, what would it be?
Read
the book. It’s pretty obvious.
Are
you going to correct the spelling of “favorite?” It’s bugging me.
