Author Interview
1. Tell us a bit about your writing background.
I've always loved reading but writing is something I have come to relatively recently. A few years ago, I had just read Twilight and whilst I wasn't big into vampires, I loved the sense of all-consuming, yet forbidden love between the two main characters and was totally hooked. After trawling Amazon trying to find my next read and not having much luck, I decided I would have a go at writing the kind of book I was looking for. When I started, I found I couldn't stop! I loved everything about writing; the story-making, how the characters come to life, and the totally absorbing nature of the whole process. It was a real turning point in my life and now I can't imagine doing anything else.
2. Who/What were your earliest influences?
I grew up with Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl, C.S Lewis, Hans Christian Anderson and read all the time. These authors were masters of storytelling and wrote stories that draw you in, the characters are flawed and real and they have the ability to transport you to another time and place. I couldn't get enough of them! These authors are just as popular today, which is such a testament to their artistry.
3. Did you face any early challenges to finding success in writing?
The biggest challenge for me was self-doubt. Would anyone find my stories interesting? But in spite of this I carried on writing. I decided that if no-one ever read one of my books it wouldn't matter, what mattered was that I had something that I was completely passionate about. My writing journey has been an almost vertical learning curve but I have loved every second of it. I read this quote the other day, "To get closer to perfection you have to practice imperfection." I love this because not only could it apply to anything in life, but it completely sums up the writing process for me. I write every day and I learn every day.
4. What are your favorite books as a reader today? What qualities in them appeal to you?
I love a romance, but it has to have a good story, just two people getting together isn't enough for me. I adore Harry Potter, JK Rowling's ability to spin a tale is second to none. One of my favourite books is the Godfather and I have reread it many times. The Time Traveller's Wife, YA stuff, Alexander Dumas. My taste is pretty eclectic, but the themes that run through them all are interesting characterization, great story-telling, humour and love.
5. What do you do outside your writing life?
I'm a mum and a wife and we have a menagerie of animals that need riding, mucking out, walking, feeding and petting!
6. What encouragement helped you along the way?
The support of my husband and my best friend. When I'm writing, I find it incredibly hard to concentrate on anything else and my husband has been very patient and understanding, particularly when I've forgotten to do any housework! My best friend is also an avid reader, a brutal critic and the most supportive and encouraging person I know.
7. What advice do you have for beginning writers?
Just write and then write some more.
8. What's up next for your fans?
I'm currently working on the sequel to Tagan's Child and then I'm going to finish another book I have started to write that is quite different to TC.
9. What has been your biggest compliment?
That the lead male character in Tagan's Child, Ahran Elessar is, "A cross between Christian Grey and Mr Darcy."
10. Is there anything you'd like to say to your fans and readers?
Support indie authors because there are some cracking writers out there and the job of writer/PR agent/publisher is not an easy one. Review the books you read and follow your favourite authors. There is nothing more rewarding than having fans and readers contacting you to share their passion for your writing, it also makes your favourite authors want to write more. It's a win-win situation!
