Author Interview

1. What inspired you to want to become a writer?
When I was 9, my teacher sent me out of the class for writing a story in which the lead character dies. It was my attempt at writing a story with a twist. Both the teacher and headmaster said that the lead character can never die in a story and at that stage I wanted to be a writer.

2. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Wow, there have been so many. I have been honoured to speak in local schools to kids about my journey and how anyone can get there if they just believe in themselves and persevere. I have also been so touched that people have read my work and reviewed it so highly.  Also, I am currently negotiating film rights to The Radio.

3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
It would have to be Roald Dahl’s Unexpected Tales which is my favourite book. So so clever.

4. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
The power to change the weather at a whim. I love the seasons and I find that weather really affects my days, therefore switching on sun when I need a boost or snow to watch whilst cuddling up inside would be great.

5. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
The Page is a page turning mystery thriller with a unexpected twist – its unlike anything you’ve ever read.

I am giving away the royalties from The Page to the person who solves the fifteen clues in the text. Plus it has a twist ;-)  www.jonathanleeauthor.com/competition

6. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I am writing two stories at the moment. The first A Tiny Feeling of Fear or The Two Sides of One  is the story of how people can put on a mask for their working life whilst their home life might be altogether different. It follows how one tiny event can turn life upside down for better, for worse.

I am also writing the final part in The Radio/The Page trilogy, which at present is called The Biscuits!

7. Do you write as you go or do you have the book planned before you start the first draft?
I simply have a sentence and that’s it. If The Radio and The Page didn’t have huge twists I’d share the sentences for each but don’t want to spoil it. The sentence tells a synopsis of what happens. I build everything around that. I also write out of order, writing whatever chapter takes my fancy on a given day. I piece it all together at the end.

8. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
Definitely True Story with Jonah Hill. I followed the Christian Longo case when it happened. An unbelievable true story!

9. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
Without question Seattle or New Zealand. I’ve been to both and absolutely adore them.  Seattle is just the coolest place on earth and so interesting, being on the ocean. New Zealand has everything from glaciers to hot mud springs to amazing scenery. I could live and write in either.

10. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
Yes, absolutely. I think that George (The Radio) has lots of exaggerated traits similar to my own. Michael in The Page is nothing like me, though I think I have similarities to some of the female character traits.

About the Author
A SPECIAL UPCOMING CONTEST FROM THE AUTHOR

The Page has 15 clues which to a lesser or greater extent give away the twist in the final chapter. The clues are inserted into the text and hopefully are well-hidden. To celebrate the release of The Page in February 2015, a competition will be run. We will invite people to identify the clues and enter (when they have ten or more - as some may be so well hidden they are never found) through my website  www.jonathanleeauthor.com. The competition will close 163 days after the release of The Page, and the winner (i.e. the one who identified the most clues - in the event of a tie - at random) will win:

1) One month's royalties earned from The Page;
2) The original manuscript (of which there is only one);
3) A numbered and signed copy of The Page - review copy - there are only 20 of these worldwide;
4) A signed copy of my back catalogue in paperback or kindle version;
5) The Page promotional mug;
6) A free signed copy of all future novels released by me for life.

The overall winner will win 1-6 above. 2nd/3rd will received 4-6 only.

Jonathan Lee was born in a small mining town somewhere in the north of England. His first novel, The Radio was nationally shortlisted in The Novel Prize 2012 for new authors, coming second from over 4,000 entries. The Radio was published in April 2013 and has received critical acclaim and sold more than 5,000 copies. His second novel, The Page is published in Spring 2015.
