Thank you for inviting me to “cast” my
book! It’s so much fun to imagine the story unfolding on the big screen.
Tea
Leone is perfect to play Shay, the gritty down-on-her-luck single mother of
Taylor. Her beach-girl blond good looks can turn brittle and even harsh in
certain settings, which speaks to her versatility as an actress as well as her
marvelously changeable look. This works for Shay, whose emotions run the gamut
from fierce pride to relentless determination to grief to seduction to
tentative hope.
Paul
is a handsome young man, except his lack of confidence and shaky grasp on his
life choices mean that he doesn’t know it. There’s a hint of fear in him, no
matter the circumstances; a wounded quality to his interactions that can be
troubling. Josh Hutcherson (from Hunger Games) has that same quality, to me:
even when he is at his most heroic, you can discern the hurt he carries on the
inside.
Paul’s
mother Colleen does not see herself as strong or particularly likeable, and no
one else does, either. She is also stiff and a bit too formal, her looks dulled
by too much hairspray and the wrong clothes and makeup. But when the chips are
down, she steps up with everything she’s got. I think Bellamy Young, who plays
the first lady on SCANDAL, could capture those qualities perfectly.
