Excerpt

My feet moved in sync to the rhythm of the music. Despite the fact that I was dancing with Sir Roberts, a perfectly handsome gentleman (someone who any young woman would kill to dance with), my heart ached for another. The cheery music drove to a climax and the gentleman in front of me bowed as I, in return, curtsied.

I was hoping to return to my assigned seat but, however, Sir Roberts did not want to leave me. He was rambling continuously about himself (as if I would even be interested in such a pompous and arrogant man!). My body was there beside Sir Roberts but all my mind could register was the breath-taking creature striding towards me.

My stomach fluttered with butterflies as his eyes locked on mine, his intense gaze leaving me stray and weak. Next to me, the man babbled on, oblivious to my lack of attention.

I lowered my head when he stopped in front of me, my hair hiding the furious heat that spread to my face and my dress securing my heart from jumping out.

“Pardon me for interrupting, Sir Roberts. But may I steal this lovely maiden away from you?”

My head snapped up at his boldness. As I blushed harder, Mr Arthur Malum led me away from the bewildered and gawking Sir Roberts.

Mr Malum placed a hand at the small of my back and silently guided me towards an exit in the back. When we reached a big, oak tree on the river bank - far away from the ball- he turned and faced me.

“God, you are beautiful!” he said, taking my hand in his.

I blushed.

“Thank you, Mr Malum.” I said, my head low.

“Ma belle. I keep telling you. Call me Arthur. If you don’t who else is going to?” he whispered, raising my chin with his other hand, so I had no excuse but to look into those beautiful green eyes.

“Arthur.” I said, smiling.

“I love you.” Arthur blurted out, his eyes sparkling.

My eyes widened and a warm glow developed inside me.

“You do?” my voice quivering.

He nodded.

“I love you, ma belle. From the second I set my eyes on you, I have fallen in love with you.” he declared.

We were standing quite close to each other now.

“So, now the question is, do you love me?” He was holding both my hands.

I could not trust myself to speak so I nodded and smiled as a breath-taking grin split across his face. He leaned towards me and I closed my eyes, anticipating his next move.

“Whoa!” I sat upright, holding my backpack tight to my chest and ready to use as a weapon.
