MY REVIEW

I really enjoy a good picture book. They just fill me with joy. Mia gets a lesson on the importance of difference and how being different can be a great advantage. She learns not to worry about the little things in life - no pun intended. There are important things in life one should focus on and other things that you shouldn't really worry about - such as whether you're short or tall.

Why worry about what you can't change instead of thinking about what you can change? As much as the kids made fun of Mia because of her height, she soon came to realise that she's perfect just the way she is and that the world needs both tall and short people.

It was a good lesson to learn, and I really liked the example used to demonstrate the importance of being different and accepting who you are.

MY REVIEW

Another joyous story about being different and accepting who you are. Loved the rhyming scheme. What I enjoy most about these books is that they don't feel preachy. Some kids don't like reading because they feel they're being pressured to be a certain way. This isn't the case here. You completely forget you're learning because the story is portrayed in such a joyous manner. Reading can sometimes feel like a chore, but this book is just pure fun.

We are all unique because we are all different. A wonderful read.

EXCERPT from BUTTERFLY BLOOD:

Darkness consumes him.
Choking.
Suffocating.
His lungs burn as if they’ve been lit on fire.
He reaches out for something.
Anything.
But nothing is familiar.
The smells.
The sounds.
The voices.
And he can’t feel anything.
Except numbness.
Someone speaks.
But it’s a foreign language.
Foreign and muffled.
Light enters his brain, blinding and as painful as staring into the sun.
The brightness grows, with it the sharpness of a thousand needles.
He wants to scream.
He opens his mouth to scream.
But only a weak cry slips over his parched lips.
So dry.
So dry.
The light retracts.
Darkness slithers toward him, coiling up his leg …
Moving ever so slowly until it reaches his mouth and slips inside.
And all he wants to do is drink it up.
So thirsty.
So thirsty.

MY REVIEW

This is my kind of book. It's not every day you read a story that centres on a young character suffering with anxiety, and I just loved the message told throughout the book. It's one I often use myself: think only about now and not about yesterday or tomorrow. Live in the moment and enjoy it or you might miss out on the wonders life has to offer.

This is a much needed book today, particularly with the rise in depression in young children. It's a good reminder - not only for children but for adults too - to smile and push worrying thoughts aside. Here today, gone tomorrow, so why worry about the negative. Think positive and just smile.

It was a good read. I really enjoyed it.

MY REVIEW

Self-proclaimed tomboy Leda has certianly grown a lot since she was first introduced to us at the tender age of nine. As she journeys through her later teenage years, she learns that with age comes more responsibility - and more chances of making all the wrong decisions. A lot is changing for Lee and the people around her, and she's not sure she can keep up. When peer pressure starts to take its toll, Lee quickly learns that her expectations and the reality of her world are not seeing eye to eye. Trying to please everyone brings about insecurities that governs the decisions she makes and interferes with past and future relationships. Boys are still a mystery to Lee, especially her long time crush Nico the thug, and although they form a stronger bond and she gets a better understanding of why he is the way he is, her high expectations prove to be a constant stumbling block in their relationship.

I really enjoyed the way this book unfolded. There were some shocking moments and subject matters that I thought the author handled well, though I would have liked a deeper exploration into one or two issues, be it with Nico or Lee's family, but as short-lived as they were, they made me understand some of the characters a little better. I was a little surprised by the fact that many of the secondary characters - her family and high school friends - haven't changed much since the first book. It appears as if it's only Leda and Nico who are changing. Everyone else is as they were since book 1. Perhaps it's because we don't get to delve much into their backgrounds, but I had expected more of a growth with some of the characters. Still, I love how Lee handles the difficult situations she finds herself in. She has been portrayed as being very mature for her age, but there is still a naive innocence about her character that I appreciate. No matter how mature she thinks she is, she's still just a girl in the pursuit of happiness. What that happiness looks like, I don't even think Lee herself knows.

I am definitely looking forward to finding out how Lee's journey ends.

Book Description:
Beauty and the beast like you’ve never imagined!” —New York Times bestselling author Pintip Dunn

Dresden is cursed. His chest houses a hive of bees that he can’t stop from stinging people with psychosis-inducing venom. His face is a shifting montage of all the people who have died because of those stings. And he has been this way for centuries—since he was eighteen and magic flowed through his homeland, corrupting its people.

He follows harbingers of death, so at least his curse only affects those about to die anyway. But when he arrives in a Midwest town marked for death, he encounters Essie, a seventeen-year-old girl who suffers from debilitating delusions and hallucinations. His bees want to sting her on sight. But Essie doesn’t see a monster when she looks at Dresden.

Essie is fascinated and delighted by his changing features. Risking his own life, he holds back his bees and spares her.
