Author Interview

1. What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I'm not really sure, I guess I always had a bit of an active imagination! When I was little I read a lot of Enid Blyton and Roald Dahl so they definitely had an effect on my young mind. I would disappear into their magical worlds for hours and I'd even read while I was walking down the street - a bit like people do with their phones now I suppose!

2. Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
I think my self-publishing journey has been more exciting and rewarding than my traditional deal with a mainstream publisher, because when you do all your own marketing you meet so many other amazing people on the way - marketers, bloggers, readers and writers, and you build a kind of support network that feels so awesome to be a part of. I moved over 30,000 copies of my first book in a promo too, which was great!

3. If you could have a signed copy of any novel what would it be and why?
The Fault In Our Stars by John Green. It had such a dramatic effect on me and made me strive to be a better writer.

4. If you could have any superpower what would you choose?
I'd want to be able to fly. Imagine how much time and money that would save? I'd probably fly to a different ex boyfriend's house every night and be a literal fly on the wall, till I got bored and went to hot Hollywood actor's houses instead.

5. Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
The Day Of The Wave is a fictional romantic story of love, hope and survival following a real-life natural disaster and as far as I know, no one else has written anything like it.

6. Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
Lots! I'm always writing about four books at once. The one I am most excited about though is a bit of a secret project. It's non-fiction and hopefully I'll get to announce it soon enough. It'll be written under a pen name though!

7. Do you write as you go or do you have the book planned before you start the first draft?
With fiction I tend to have the start, middle and ending planned but the rest is to be filled in as I go. You never really know how your characters will develop sometimes as they can often take on a life of their own as you write. With non-fic I have no clue! All my travel books (Burqalicious, Balilicious and Latinalicous) were written on the road so I never knew what was going to happen! That was part of the fun.

8. What movie and/or book are you looking forward to this year?
I'm looking forward to Paper Towns, the movie, as I loved the book!

9. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
I'm living here right now - Vancouver. It's beautiful! I already lived in New York, back when I was younger. It was always where I wanted to be but I like the peace and quiet a bit more now, and nature! Vancouver has the best of everything - the ocean, the mountains and a friendly, if a little crazy city vibe.

10. Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
I see myself in Alyssa, who's the protagonist in Before He Was Gone (Starstruck #2). She's bright and bubbly but makes huge mistakes as she struggles to find her place in the world. I think we can all relate to that sometimes.
